Why Solskjaer's Man Utd injury crisis is partly Mourinho's fault

The Norwegian could be without 10 players on Wednesday, but it is a natural consequence of demanding more from his squad than his predecessor did

“My injury record is very low,” boasted Jose Mourinho on the day he was unveiled as Manchester United manager in July 2016. “So I never promote because of a need. I did it because of conviction and decision.”

In defending claims that he never gives chances to young players, Mourinho gave a nod to a problem which is currently hanging over Manchester United barely a couple of months after the Portuguese’s departure.

His successor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is currently wrestling with the loss of 10 players from his first-team squad due to injury ahead of Wednesday’s visit to Crystal Palace. It is the worst medical crisis United have faced since the season before Mourinho’s arrival, when Louis van Gaal was shorn of 14 senior stars due to injury at a similar time of the campaign.

But far from adding weight to Mourinho’s argument, the present crisis has seemingly come about in large part due to the sacked boss’ tactical approach during his two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

Under Mourinho, United had embarrassingly low returns for distance covered in the Premier League, with their 4023.4 kilometres in 2016-17 ranking worst in the division and last season’s 4099.8km placing them 19th out of 20.

And following his departure, caretaker-boss Solskjaer warned that he would be expecting a more energetic mindset on the pitch.

“One of the things I talked about today is that a Manchester United team should never ever be outworked,” he said after the 5-1 win at Cardiff in his first game in charge. “It doesn’t matter what team you play, you should run more than them and then your skills will give you a chance of winning.

“I said the same to these lads as I do back home in Molde: ‘Just work harder than them, enjoy yourselves, pass it forward, run forward, if you lose the ball I don’t mind, as long as you work to win it back.’”

The Norwegian’s return of 11 wins, two draws and just a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in 14 matches has more than justified the changes he has made. But the recent losses of Nemanja Matic, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata due to muscle injuries have led some to believe that Solskjaer’s approach has asked too much of his players.

Whereas United averaged 98 sprints per game in the 17 games under Mourinho in the league this season, they have upped that to 108.6 per game in Solskjaer’s 10 Premier League matches. Yet the former centre-forward is right not to compromise in the quest for better returns in the win column.

“It’s probably linked, yes, because when do you make that change?” he mused when questioned on Tuesday on the higher standards he has employed. “Do you wait until pre-season and think you will change results by just not asking them to run, or do we start now and show them what the demands of intensity are and how we want to play?

“Well you have seen what I have chosen, I have chosen that we need to play as a Man United team and if you want to be a part of  Man United, it’s survival of the fittest isn’t it?”

The more thrilling football dished up at Old Trafford over the past 10 weeks has certainly come at a cost, but the fact that United’s players have not been physically prepared for the kind of high-intensity games that are common in the Premier League should go down as a black mark not against Solskjaer’s name but alongside that of Mourinho.

What other options did Solskjaer have open to him? As he says, he could have sent the players out with the same stultifying tactics as Mourinho until such time as he had been able to put his squad through a more intense physical regime, but that would more than likely have led to the same disappointing results and disaffected air around Carrington.

He has been entirely right in increasing the demands on the players and appears prepared to deal with the consequences, calling up promising youngsters Tahith Chong, Jimmy Garner and Angel Gomes for Wednesday night’s game at Selhurst Park.

It will undoubtedly take a full pre-season to put the players through the kind of paces which will make them the feared attacking threat of old again, without widespread injuries being a natural consequence, but the very fact that such a change in emphasis has resulted so quickly in a worrying trend of muscular problems does not reflect well on Mourinho.

It just goes to show how far off the pace United were during his tenure, and also underlines the different standards Manchester United should be demanding compared to those Mourinho had put in place for his forgettable 30-month spell in charge.

He was right about one thing: his injury record is very low. But maybe that’s because his default setting is to always play far too safe.

Any United fan would gladly take Solskjaer’s more risk-taking, thrill-seeking football, whatever the medical fall-out may be in the short term.

Griezmann: A victory royale or a last-minute goal? I get more stressed playing Fortnite!

Click:SWISS Cosmetic Device

The forward says the videogame worries him more than the pressure of a late finish on the pitch

Antoine Griezmann says he experiences more stress playing Fortnite than he does when he is attempting to score a goal.

The French forward has long been a fan of the videogame, incorporating dances from Fortnite as celebrations after scoring.

He memorably performed the “Take the L” dance from the game at the World Cup as he guided France to glory in Russia this past summer.

While the forward kept his cool all through his team’s push to the World Cup trophy, Griezmann says he finds it more difficult to keep a level head while playing Fortnite.

“Ahh I think it’s the Victory Royale,” Griezmann told Oh My Goal when asked to compare scoring goals to winning a game of Fortnite.

“I’m more stressed trying to get a Victory Royale than when I’m in the penalty area. I think [Fortnite] is tougher.”

Griezmann has continued to fire throughout the La Liga season, scoring 12 goals while providing seven assists in league play this term.

He’s also helped guide Atletico Madrid closer to a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals as the Spanish side topped Juventus 2-0 in the opening leg to seal a massive advantage.

Asked to assemble his dream five-a-side team, Griezmann leaned on one of his Atletico Madrid team-mates, fellow French stars and one legend to construct his squad.

“I’d go with Ousmane Dembele and I would say NG, N’Golo Kante, because you never lose when he’s on your team,” Griezmann said.

“I would take Godin because he always finds a way to cheat and win!

“I’ve picked three, right? With me, that’s four. And the last person, David Beckham. No goalkeeper. An open goal!”

Griezmann and Atletico Madrid are back in action on Sunday against the forward’s former club, Real Sociedad, before facing Leganes after that.

Then comes the pivotal match with Juventus as Atleti travel to Turin to take on the Serie A champions.

Australia's Super Rugby teams have the skills to beat Kiwis: Folau

‘It’s not rocket science’.

That’s the assessment from Waratahs fullback Israel Folau on his side’s chances of beating the Highlanders in the first of a two-match tour across the ditch.

Australian teams are 0-18 against New Zealand sides this season but the Waratahs’ attacking enterprise that emerged against the Rebels is a hint that they have what it takes to score against any team

Though a defence that missed another 40 tackles on Sunday will be heavily tested against the Highlanders, Folau said the Waratahs might just have found the key to ridding themselves of the second-guessing that has plagued them this year.

“You’ve got to be confident in going over there and that’s what we’re thinking about,” he said.

“It’s not rocket science.

“Every team’s going over to really get the win but that’s not the motivation.

“The guys have got to get the result out of their heads and just go and play rugby.

“That’s what we did this afternoon. We made a few mistakes, but it didn’t hold us back from expressing ourselves and playing.”

Folau is far from the only one trying to get out of his head, a strategy he believes all of his teammates need to embrace ahead of a daunting tour.

“The challenge is because we’re playing New Zealand teams to not go into your shell,” he said.

“I think it’s been a bit of a perception in the way people have looked at the way New Zealand teams play (that Australian teams can’t do that).

“I would definitely back, not only our guys, but all the Australian Super Rugby teams have got the skills to play it.

“It hasn’t gone our way but it’s not going to hold us back to playing the way we want to play and I know we’ve got the skills to do that.”

Folau looked like he was relishing playing rugby for the first time in recent memory, savouring the moment as he ran in for a critical 40th-minute try against the Rebels.

Until their round 11 match against the Blues, Folau had been on the longest try-drought of his Super Rugby career.

Four tries in two games has bucked that trend, in the first sign that the 28-year-old is feeling comfortable again, at what could be very convenient timing for the Waratahs and Wallabies.

“I think from the start of the week, I really just wanted to simplify things and just look for that enjoyment and the reason why I play the game,” he said

“I really enjoyed it out there, trying to get that smile back out there.

“That’s what it’s all about for me, is really enjoying my footy with a bunch of my mates.”

The Waratahs take on the Highlanders on Saturday night, kicking off at 5:35pm AEST, LIVE on FOX SPORTS.

Brumbies keeping quiet on Lealiifano return

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham says Christian Lealiifano has done everything possible to throw himself into contention for a Super Rugby comeback.

Lealiifano has thrown himself into contention for inclusion for Friday night’s clash with the Reds, just 11 months after a leukaemia diagnosis, and reports emerged on Wednesday morning that he had done enough to hit another remarkable recovery milestone.

The Brumbies held off naming their bench on Wednesday, with official news on Lealiifano in that announcement on on Thursday morning, but Larkham gave every indication the playmaker was likely to be among that 23.

“He’s done everything he needs to do to get himself right for selection,” he said.

“He played a game of fourth grade on the weekend for Tuggeranong against Royals and I thought he played exceptionally well.

“Prior to that, playing in Singapore, for 30 minutes with the boys and again thought he played well so his progression has been good and he’s put himself in the mix for selection this week.”

The emotional boost Lealiifano’s involvement could have on the side was seen in that Singapore game and Larkham said that would only be magnified in a Super Rugby return.

Lealiifano’s co-captain Sam Carter doesn’t expect any power struggles when the flyahlf returns, with the playmaker to take the reins.

“He said he was going to take over everything when he gets back,” he joked.

“We spoke about that and generally when i’m on the field I run everything through the 10 anyway so that’s Christian’s spot and he’s the co-captain.

“It’s the same as last year. I ran every decision, lineout wise, through him and he speaks to me. I have absolutely no doubt that it’s going to be the same.

‘It’s going to be a seamless transition when he comes back on, just the energy he brings and the chat and the experience he has in that backline is just going to lift the boys so I’ve no doubt if selected he’s going to be good to go.”

Scott Sio will play his first Brumbies match in more than two months, after returning from a knee injury in the Wallabies’ June Series Tests.

Ben Alexander could also have the chance to break the Brumbies games record, against the current holder George Smith, if he is included on the bench.

Carter said, though, that was something they had tiptoed around this week, after a last-minute injury cost Alexander the chance to play the record-breaking match before the June break.

“We haven’t spoken about that all week because last time we spoke about it and made a big deal, he popped his knee cap out,” he said.

“So, we’re really excited for him if he gets the opportunity to play that game and ironically enough it’s against George Smith this weekend if he gets named.

“It’s an amazing achievement for him and his family and everything he’s done over the last 10 years for the Brumbies.

“I know he’s personally excited so I can’t wait to see if he gets that opportunity.”:

Stiles backs young guns for Blues clash

Nick Stiles promised changes after the Reds’ finals hopes were quelled against the Force and he has delivered on that promise.

With Stephen Moore resting in Brisbane, Andrew Ready headlines four changes made to the starting XV.

The hooker has been plying his trade in club rugby for the majority of the year after being dropped in favour of Alex Mafi but Stiles has backed him to start against the Blues.

“This gives him (Ready) an opportunity to show us the football that he can play,” Stiles said.

“To see his work rate around the field and to see how hard he works defensively is going to be a big thing for him.”Taniela Tupou celebrates turning 21 with a start at tighthead prop in place of Sam Talakai, who will come off the bench.

“He (Tupou) started the game against the Hurricanes and it was probably his best performance of the year,” Stiles said.

“I think he’s been developing nicely along the way in what is a very tough position.

“We feel that he has really grown and deserves an opportunity to start.”

Many at Ballymore believe Lukhan Tui and Izack Rodda will be the heart of the forward pack in the near future and they will start together.

Rob Simmons has had the disappointment of missing the Wallabies squad compounded by missing the Queensland 23 altogether, with Kane Douglas picked on the bench.

“Two very young locks but two very exciting prospects,” Stiles said of the pair.

“Both play a very physical game, both are very abrasive with what they do and I just feel the attitude Izack has shown is something we want to seek through the rest of the side.”

The fourth and final change to the starting XV comes at halfback.

Nick Frisby has been dropped for the second time this year, with James Tuttle set to take the reigns.

Caleb Timu has also been named on the bench for a potential Super Rugby debut.

De Jong admits he could have joined Man City over Barca

Frenkie De Jong has revealed that he could have joined Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain instead of moving to Spain.

The former Ajax player signed for Barcelona for £68million in the summer after an impressive Champions League display led him to be linked with a host of top sides.

The 22-year-old Dutch international said that Barcelona were his first choice, but he could have moved elsewhere.

“If it had not been Barca, I find it hard to say it now, it would have been PSG or City,” De Jong told Spanish paper El Periodico, reported by Eurosport.

De Jong said money was not on his mind when making the decision: “It is not right to talk about [money].

“Money was not my business. Money was never discussed in the meeting room with me. It was a matter for my agent.

“The most important thing was the way [Barcelona] played and how they saw me, what plans they had for me.

He claimed that it was about the role he would play at Barcelona that convinced him to move to the Spanish champions.

“When [Barcelona] told me they saw me playing here, that they thought about this and that, then they really convinced me.

“I talked with my family and my agent and we chose Barca. Then my agent came here to negotiate.”

Lampard reveals plans ‘strongly reinforced’ at half-time in Cup

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed the plans that had to be reinforced at half-time in Chelsea’s win over Grimsby on Wednesday.

The Blues comfortably made it through to the next round of the EFL Cup, with a 7-1 victory, but Lampard was not happy with the performance at half-time.

Particularly as one specific plan they had for the game was not being carried out by his players.

“In the first half. With Callum and Christian Pulisic as wingers, the message was to hurt the Grimsby line and run in behind and end up in areas inside the box where you are taking people on,” Lampard told the official Chelsea website.

“It wasn’t happening and at half-time the message had to be reinforced pretty strongly.

“In the second half we managed to get in better positions.

“Callum’s talent means he has to work hard to run behind people, to get at people and be inside and outside and work off the ball.

“That is where he needs to learn, because if he wants to be in the team week in week out that is what he will have to do.”

Chelsea ran out 7-1 winners against Grimsby on Wednesday night, but Lampard has said he was unhappy with the defending in particular at times.

“At half-time I was not very happy with the game. To concede the goal that made it 2-1 was a disaster because I showed them it was a huge threat, the long ball and the second ball in behind, and conceding that made us a bit nervous.

“So it is good for the young players in particular to see that small details, if you don’t watch the video we show before the game and realise the danger, can cost you.

“It was fine tonight because we won 7-1 but against Liverpool we lost the game because of small details.”

Chelsea face Man Utd in the last 16 of the EFL cup after The Reds edged out League One Rochdale on penalties.

Lampard refused “to talk Man Utd down” after the draw.

Man Utd given boost as £11m target eyes ‘dream move’

Manchester United could pursue a January move for Mario Mandzukic after the striker turned down a lucrative offer to play in Qatar.

United briefly contemplated signing Mandzukic from Juventus in the summer to bolster their attacking ranks, before opting against a deal.

It was reported that they could revisit their interest in January after a spate of attacking injuries left their squad threadbare.

The Daily Mail now say Mandzukic has rejected a contract worth £7million a year to play in Qatar ‘as he has not given up on his dream move’ to Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old is yet to feature under Maurizio Sarri in Italy this season, only making the matchday squad as an unused substitute in three of five Serie A games.

But Juve would not sanction a loan deal are ‘are looking for an £11m fee’ for a striker who ‘believes he still has something to offer at the top level’.

‘He shunned the mega-money deal on offer in Qatar for a last chance at starring in a top league, concerned at the lack of first-class football facilities in the Middle East,’ the report reads.

And while Mandzukic ‘would represent a last throw of the dice’ for United, they will consider the option.

Pellegrini takes ‘first responsibility’ for Oxford hammering

Manuel Pellegrini took full responsibility after West Ham crashed out of the Carabao Cup following a 4-0 hammering at Oxford.

The Sky Bet League One side scored four unanswered second-half goals via Elliott Moore, Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and the excellent Shandon Baptiste to progress into the fourth round for the first time in 22 years.

It was a terrible result for West Ham, who made nine changes after the 2-0 win at home to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

“The whole team didn’t play well. Not only did we concede four goals, but we didn’t create too many chances,” Pellegrini admitted.

“We missed too many passes from the beginning and the responsibility is first on me because I picked the players and second of course on the team that didn’t compete.

“We talked enough with all of them to understand that the competition was different, the team was different and to play now against Oxford, who were in a good moment after winning 6-0 (at Lincoln) in their last game.

“The players must understand, but I repeat we couldn’t do it because in front was a team that played very well. I don’t want to take anything away from Oxford because they played very well.”

Only Issa Diop and Pablo Fornals retained their starting berths from the win over Manchester United, but Pellegrini introduced Felipe Anderson and Sebastien Haller off the bench early in the second half.

He defended his team selection at the Kassam Stadium, insisting it was a necessity because of the fixture schedule West Ham have.

“I think in England if you want to play in all the competitions you need to use your whole squad. You cannot just continue with the same players that play on Saturday,” Pellegrini added.

Oxford manager Karl Robinson was delighted with his players and urged the 9,000 home supporters to turn up again for Saturday’s league fixture with Gillingham.

“We had the belief in ourselves that we could get a result,” he added. “I’m over the moon for the fans and the players.

“It’s about the players, about the fans and about the community of Oxfordshire and the big thing for me now is the people who came here for the first time in a long time, that they buy a ticket and come on Saturday.

“We want them to support us moving forward because economical growth is important for what we are trying to achieve.”

Robinson, who masterminded a 4-0 win over Man United five years ago as MK Dons manager, admitted the result was one of Oxford’s best at home in recent years, exceeding their FA Cup wins over Newcastle and Swansea.

“Looking at the scoreboard, 4-0 against West Ham and a very strong West Ham, this will probably go down as one of the biggest results at the Kassam in recent years,” Robinson said.

Oxford will host League One rivals Sunderland in the fourth round and they will compete at that stage for the first time since 1997.
