The 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra Is the Least Valuable Since 1996

Some women like to wear their diamonds on their fingers, and others like to wear them on their boobs. It’s a matter of personal preference, really.

For those who fall into the latter category, the crème de la crème of bejeweled brassieres is the Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra, which is unveiled every year just ahead of the brand’s annual runway extravaganza. No gem or jewel is off limits for the million-dollar sparklers — we’re talking sapphires! Emeralds! Rubies! If it’s a gem that sounds like it could double as a hipster’s baby name, it’s been set in a Fantasy Bra.

Victoria’s Secret

At least, this was the case in years prior. The 2018 Fantasy Bra (above) — which was modeled on the runway during Thursday evening’s taping by Elsa Hosk — is worth significantly less than past iterations. With 2,100 Swarovski Created Diamonds (71 carats-worth) and responsibly sourced topaz set in sterling silver, it’s certainly sparkly, and the brand reports that it’s worth a cool $1 million. But that’s nothing compared to when Fantasy Bras peaked in 2000, when Gisele Bündchen modeled the Red Hot Fantasy Bra, which was valued at $15 million.

Now, a million dollars is nothing to scoff at, but some experts don’t even believe the 2018 Dream Angels Bra is worth even that. Diamond expert and gemologist Grant Mobley told Page Six that it’s worth “far below six figures” because the cost of the lab-grown “Created Diamonds” is significantly less than the cost of mined diamonds.

“Currently selling for $800 USD per carat, the reported 71 carats included in the bra would only be worth $56,800 USD,” he said. “When you add the price of the stones to the cost of workmanship and the price of the metal — the total value would still be far below six figures.”

He added that, “only natural diamonds from the earth would put the value of the bra into the millions of dollars, as in past shows.”

L Brands, Victoria’s Secret’s parent company, has struggled in recent years (shares were down 43 percent just this year, according to Business Insider), and the declining of value of the Fantasy Bra seems to echo this point. Even if the bra were worth $1 million, the 2018 version is still the least valuable bra since its inception in 1996.

Mariya Ivankovitser

Jefferies analyst Randal Konik did not mince words in a note to clients on the relevance of the brand and the impact of its once megawatt shows. “VS’ fashion show illustrates how out of touch the brand still is,” he said. “With TV ratings that have been in free fall for years and a consumer that no longer resonates with ‘supermodels’ we question why the company continues to hold the show.”

With this year’s bra, one could argue that Victoria’s Secret was just embracing the fashionable minimalist style that Hosk referred to as a “’90s vibe.” And we’re the first to applaud VS’s ethical sourcing practices, choosing lab-grown over mined diamonds. But the downhill trend — both regarding the company’s prospects as a whole as well as the value of the Fantasy Bra — is hard to deny.

One of the reasons many critics believe the brand is struggling is their “outdated” marketing, with most of the criticism focused specifically on the brand’s lack of diversity — especially on the runway. But the brand’s senior creative, Ed Razek, isn’t listening to the “haters.”

“It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this?” he told Vogue in response to critics of size and gender identity diversity. “Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.”

Melania Trump Looks So Happy As She Lands in Ghana Wearing Candy Cane Celine Stripes

Though we’ve rarely seen an instance in which Melania’s choice of designer is a calculated attempt to send some kind of message (à la Michelle Obama, who often chose ensembles by designers who were native to the country she was visiting as a show of good will), one might read into her decision to wear Celine as statement about women’s empowerment. The dress is from Phoebe Philo’s days at the brand, before it was shaken up by Saint Laurent alum Hedi Slimane.

As the latter showed his first collection for the Parisian brand last week, it was Philo — whose following is so devout that they’ve been lovingly nicknamed Philophiles — that the fashion world couldn’t stop talking about, particularly her acute understanding of women’s lives (being a woman helps there) and the practical yet unshakably chic designs she created. Slimane was seen as the out-of-touch-foil to his predecessor at this pivotal point in the history of women’s rights. But again, the Celine connection is a stretch.

Fashion conspiracies aside, we have to admit that this is perhaps the happiest we’ve seen the First Lady in a long while. Even Kate Bennett, CNN’s White House correspondent who covers the FLOTUS beat, noted that her joyous wave to the press before departing the U.S. was an uncharacteristic move. Maybe, just maybe, Melania’s happy to get away from her adopted country for a little while. What with her husband belittling female reporters and all the Brett Kavanaugh drama — which she has stayed mum about, save for a fashion stunt which Twitter is convinced was a show of support for the judge’s accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford — we’d be happy to get away for a week, too.

Kylie Jenner and BFF Jordyn Woods Had a Run-In with Police After 21st Birthday Celebration

Kylie Jenner kicked off her BFF Jordyn Woods‘ 21st birthday celebrations on Thursday night — and the weekend is already one to remember.

Just over a month after Jenner turned 21, Woods celebrated her special day with the Kylie Cosmetics founder on Thursday night, when the pair had an innocent run-in with the law.

For the night out, Woods wore a metallic, red spaghetti-strap mini dress with heels while Jenner wore a strapless mini brown dress, also with heels.

The birthday girl documented the evening on her Instagram Story, including her “party of three” dinner with Jenner and a male friend, which was followed by a “Happy Birthday” serenade to Woods as some folks at the establishment (including Jenner!) held large, printed cut-outs of her face.

Following the celebration, the duo traded the club for singing in the backseat of a car. “When you ditch the club to sing love songs with your wifey,” Woods captioned footage of herself and Jenner.

Although Woods or Jenner weren’t driving, their vehicle was pulled over shortly after by authorities.

“Tryna be a hater right now,” Woods said as she filmed blue and red police car lights through the back window of their vehicle.

“We got pulled over,” she said laughing while Jenner stuck her tongue out. “But we didn’t drive. It’s okay.”

Their evening out came a day before the pair’s KyliexJordyn partnership releases — the full range of products drop on Friday at 3 p.m. PST — which includes new lip gloss colors and cool holographic eye palettes.

On Wednesday, Jenner posted a full video of the glitzy photoshoot they put together for the collection’s new campaign to her YouTube page. The clip captured her and Woods as they posed in coordinating glittery bodysuits and sultry skin-tight ensembles (Jenner in a tan leotard and Woods in a pink dress). Footage from the video also appeared on Jenner’s Instagram.

“Since the beginning of her business we wanted to collab together because we’re always sharing ideas with each other,” Woods told PEOPLE in August, adding that it took “at least a year” of brainstorming until the pair settled on the final version. “We’ve redesigned the collection at least five times because we couldn’t settle on one thing. We had multiple different [ones] we thought it was going to be and we finally figured out one that made sense.”

All of the names of the individual products have to do with Jenner and Woods’ bond. Sample titles include “true love,” “soul mate,” “sister,” “ride-or-die,” “my heart,” “marry me,” “loyal,” “don’t you ever leave me,” and “love you bitch.”

Kim Kardashian was forced to evacuate her home after the Woolsey wildfire swept through the Hidden Hills neighborhood of Calabasas on Thursday evening.

The reality star first posted a video of the burning hillsides captured from the window of a plane on her Instagram story, followed by a short note to followers revealing that she had just one hour to pack her belongings and evacuate.

“Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home,” she wrote. “I pray everyone is safe.” She followed with a message thanking fire fighters for “all that you do for us!!!”

The beauty mogul is not the only member of the Kardashian clan to be affected. Her big sister, Kourtney Kardashian also evacuated as the wildfire impacted surrounding areas including Calabasas, where the mom of three lives.

The 39-year-old posted a photo on her Instagram stories of her car trunk packed with bags, captioning the post, “I pray that everyone is kept safe and protected from these fires. No Calabasas tonight.”

The Kardashians aren’t the only celebrities facing the fires. Alyssa Milano was also forced to evacuate.

The City of Calabasas tweeted on Thursday evening that the Woolsey Fire has “grown to over 2,000 acres with 0% containment.”

The Woolsey Fire is just one of 3 wildfires ravaging Southern California at the moment. According to CNN, the fires have caused structure damage and a number of other evacuations. Here’s to hoping everyone stays safe.

Attention, Plus-Size Shoppers: Walmart Just Bought Your Favorite Workwear Brand

Plus-size shoppers, take note: Walmart bought plus-size ELOQUII making the brand the latest acquisition in Walmart’s pursuit to bring digital-native brands under the Walmart umbrella. Last year, Walmart bought both Modcloth, Bonobos, and several other digital-first startups, as part of a larger effort to differentiate its offerings from Amazon.

For those unfamiliar, ELOQUII is a four-year-old plus-size clothing startup that offers workwear, occasion-wear, denim, and casual pieces in sizes 14-28. ELOQUII Founder & CEO Mariah Chase (as well as all of the company’s employees) will join the Walmart team as part of the acquisition.

“We are excited to be in the company of other brands in the Walmart eCommerce family,” reads a blog post on the ELOQUII website. “Brands that are disrupting categories and innovating such as Bonobos (did you see they launched extended sizes?), Jet.com, ModCloth, Moosejaw and more. We think they’re pretty cool. Plus, Walmart eCommerce is looking to the future and even has its own tech incubator, Store No 8, that’s launched new companies like Jetblack. We are excited to be a part of their innovation.”

According to ELOQUII, joining the Walmart family will provide the brand with “operational leverage.” As of now, there are no plans to sell ELOQUII at Walmart stores — in other words, it’s business as usual for any plus-size shoppers on the hunt for affordable business casual pieces.

Keira Knightley Can Play “Despacito” on Her Teeth

While promoting her new film (a period piece, natch), The Aftermath, the 34-year-old mom visited The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and revealed a hidden skill we literally never saw coming: she’s a master teeth player. And what does that mean, exactly? Well, it’s actually pretty straight-forward: she plays music *on* her teeth. Like, why invest in expensive equipment when your best instrument is just beyond your lips?? It’s a budget-conscious foray into the industry, really.

Keira developed her talent as a child and can now expertly tap out “the classics,” like “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” (which she performs below). But she’s not married to just the old standbys, she also takes contemporary requests, like “Despacito.”

Pickford ready to ‘thrive’ under pressure of England competition

Jordan Pickford relishes the challenge of trying to hold on to the England No.1 spot and believes growing competition will push him to another level.

The Everton goalkeeper has repaid Gareth Southgate’s faith since becoming first choice for the World Cup, where his penalty shoot-out heroics against Colombia were complemented by a man-of-the-match display in the quarter-final against Sweden.

Pickford’s ability on the ball was key to his getting the starting role ahead of Jack Butland – a player who was omitted for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo following a difficult start to the season with Stoke.

Tom Heaton and Nick Pope got the nod instead this time, but Angus Gunn, Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale are knocking at the door.

“I think it’s great for the GK union that there is that much competition,” Pickford said. “It means people will thrive and become better goalkeepers.

“It means you have to be performing for your club first and training hard, making yourself the best you can be at Everton for me, then England should take care of itself.

“The more competition the better. It will make me better as well. I think it’s six goalkeepers (in the Premier League), which is quality for us.”

Ben Foster takes the number of starting English goalkeepers in the Premier League to seven but is now retired from international duty, while Southgate is keeping tabs on Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman during his loan spell at Swansea.

The England manager’s options are keeping Pickford on his toes, so too the way he is willing to drop big names for the purpose of progress.

“You just look at the quality on the training pitch,” the goalkeeper said. “The quality is throughout the team and we all know what we want to achieve as a team.

“We all strive to be better on the pitch and as a squad it is always evolving.

“We have new lads in this week and everyone is fighting with the competition.

“You have to be playing well to be in the side and, for your club, you’ve got to be playing well.

“That is your first focus, then you have to do well when you come here. That is what everyone seems to do in training, the standard is unbelievable.”

Pickford considers himself among the top performers in the squad and is understandably confident after a promising start to the season with Marco Silva’s Toffees.

“I’m in good form and feel I’ve kicked on,” he said. “I feel strong and have been getting clean sheets.

“The main thing is winning and as long as we win it’s okay to concede now and again.

“We’ve started the season well and I’m making good saves and my distribution has been good as well.”

It is an encouraging start to a campaign that could end in memorable fashion.

Having reached the World Cup semi-finals and finished third in the inaugural Nations League, England are aiming for Euro 2020 success in a tournament that will start and end on home soil.

“It’s still a long way to go and we have to qualify first,” Pickford said. “We’ll be looking to get as many wins (as we can), starting with the two in front of us, but knowing that is on the other side next year is a great ambition for us to make it there.

“I haven’t taken too much thought into it as it is a year away.

“I’ve just got to keep playing well for Everton and then making sure I’m on my A-game if I play for England.

“When we get closer we’ll visualise it more, but at the moment we’re focused on qualifying.”

Wright hits out at Italian Football Federation over racism

Ian Wright believes the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) “doesn’t take racism very seriously” after Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans on Sunday.

The Inter Milan striker faced abuse from home fans in Sardinia as he scored a penalty in the second half to clinch his side a 2-1 win in Serie A.

This was not the first time Cagliari fans have behaved similarly towards players; in previous matches against Juventus they had also targeted the likes of Moise Kean and Blaise Matuidi.

Speaking as a football ambassador for the Women’s Super League after the announcement of a new partnership between the Football Association and Barclays, Wright told the PA news agency: “Obviously Cagliari have got a massive rap sheet – Sulley Muntari, Samuel Eto’o, Moise Kean and Romelu Lukaku – so they should be banned.

“It’s blatantly obvious what needs to be done, it needs to be closed down. Close them down, threaten them, dock points.”

The former Arsenal forward continued: “I can say whatever I want, it doesn’t make a difference, it doesn’t seem like the Italian federation are taking any notice because they obviously don’t take racism very seriously.

“We’ve seen that with the number of times that particular club has been in the headlines.”

Lukaku used his Instagram page to express his desire for football federations to act strongly on discrimination, saying it should not be accepted by anyone in the game.

Soon after Belgian striker made his comments, Cagliari released a statement saying the club “firmly rejects” the racist abuse.

The PA news agency has contacted the FIGC for comment but has so far received no response.

Ex-Man Utd man explains why Sanchez move is a ‘bad deal’

Louis Saha thinks Manchester United’s decision to allow Alexis Sanchez to join Inter Milan on loan was a mistake.

The 30-year-old arrived at United to a huge fanfare in January 2018 in a swap deal that saw out-of-favour Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to Arsenal.

But flashes of early promise swiftly petered out and Sanchez heads to Inter Milan having scored a meagre five goals in 45 appearances.

“It’s a strange one,” Saha told Stadium Astro. “I think Alexis got to a point where his confidence dropped.

“The terms of the agreement show he needed to move.

“He’s a great player with an abundance of skills and passion. But he couldn’t deliver for United, so having a deal where United pays is a bad deal.

“You would think he could remain there and help the side but mentally it was too exhausting.

“That’s why he wanted to move – he didn’t feel appreciated. It was really hard for him. The decision is not sustainable.”

Ex-Liverpool man Owen names the one club he regrets joining

Michael Owen admits he has regrets about joining Newcastle United and viewed the move as a “downward step”.

The former England international moved back to the Premier League in 2005 with the Magpies, a year after swapping Liverpool for Real Madrid.

An injury-ravaged spell on Tyneside meant he only made 79 appearances in four years at St James’ Park, before heading to Manchester United on a free transfer.

“I should have followed my gut instincts,” Owen wrote in his book Reboot – My Life, My Time (serialised in the Daily Mirror).

“I didn’t want to go there – my heart was set on a return to Liverpool.

“From a career perspective, there was no doubt in my mind that a move to the North East was a downward step.

“As unpalatable as that opinion might be to Newcastle fans, that’s more or less what I felt.”

On former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, who once said he would “carry Michael Owen back to Anfield,” Owen added: “Freddy was only doing what all the fans constantly do at almost every football club.

“They believe their club is 10% bigger and their team is 10% better than it actually is.

“This kind of blind delusion is especially true of Newcastle United – which, as I reach for the nearest tin hat, is only a big club in the sense that it has a lot of fans and a big stadium.”

There was a watershed moment for Owen in May 2007 that “irreparably impaired” his relationship with Newcastle fans when he was booed off on a stretcher during their 1-1 draw with Watford.

“When I got home, I switched on Match of the Day to watch the game and I could hear Newcastle fans, my fans, singing: ‘What a waste of money,’” Owen continued.

“I can’t deny their actions that day changed things for me.”
