Man Utd's 1990s tactics brutally exposed by Palace & more lessons from the Premier League weekend

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have looked to play on the counterattack this season, but the Eagles showed just how they can be beaten at Old Trafford

1) Palace reveal the blueprint to take down Solskjaer’s Man Utd

You could see the problem coming a mile off.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is placing tactical emphasis on speed and directness to emulate the kind of attacking waves that characterised Manchester United when he played under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s, even though the modern game of attack-versus-defence, of possession-versus-counter, is tactically completely different to the first great Fergie era.

Crystal Palace inevitably sat in a deep formation to limit the space in behind, which, inevitably, limited Marcus Rashford, Daniel James, and Anthony Martial.

This was a game for a craftier playmaker, and yet not only was Juan Mata given just five minutes, but Paul Pogba sat deep alongside Scott McTominay. Pogba should have been freed to play higher up the pitch, rather than attempt to dictate the tempo from in front of Palace’s 4-5-1.

Overall United simply lacked urgency, failing to realise that a fast start is crucial against Palace’s frustration tactics; Jesse Lingard was anonymous, and the Rashford-Martial link just does not work when there is no space in the left half-space – where Rashford had chiefly played against Wolves.

Things improved slightly when Rashford was moved into the number 10 role, but not enough, and Palace deserved their win, creating, in the process, a template for the rest of the bottom-half clubs to follow.

2) Emery’s tactics not to blame for Arsenal’s loss at Liverpool

Unai Emery’s narrow 4-4-2 diamond took everyone by surprise at Anfield, and though Liverpool ultimately blew them away, it was a commendably brave – and interesting – approach.

The formation left enormous patches of grass for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, who attempted 23 crosses in total, to run into, and indeed it was the young right-back’s freedom to pass from the right wing that led indirectly to the first two Liverpool goals.

Above: Alexander-Arnold (top) and Robertson all touches vs Arsenal

However, Arsenal arguably got their tactics right – as right as possible, that is.

By playing so narrowly they largely nullified Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the first half, drew the full-backs so high that Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang had two-on-twos, and comfortably dealt with every cross thrown at them – until sloppy marking from a corner broke the deadlock and changed the narrative.

What’s more, while many pundits criticised Arsenal for relentlessly trying to pass out from the back, their dangerous approach was intentionally vulnerable; Liverpool were encouraged by the visitors’ apparent recklessness and continued to press high, creating space on the counter for Pepe.

High-risk passing in your own third is a staple of Emery tactics, drawing the opposition out for quick transitions into the final third. It very nearly worked, too, even if ultimately the gulf in quality between the two sides showed.

Liverpool were superb, and in that kind of form would have beaten anyone in the world. Emery’s tactics were deliberately dangerous, and Arsenal deliberately conceded territory. It was odd, yes, but perhaps the best plan Arsenal could have used.

3) Pochettino pays the price as Newcastle nullify Spurs threat

Mauricio Pochettino was made to pay for leaving his two most creative playmakers – Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Eriksen – on the bench for a match against ultra-defensive opponents in Newcastle.

Tottenham badly missed their ability to work in tight spaces and break through a compact defensive shell, and by the time they were introduced in the 62nd minute, neither player was capable of changing the rhythm of a match already firmly set.

Pochettino’s initial tactics were a mistake, too. Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura attempted to stretch the pitch by hugging the left and right touchline respectively in a 4-2-3-1, but against Newcastle’s wing-backs they did not stand a chance of finding space.

Time and again Spurs moved the ball slowly back and forth, eventually working it wide – and thus into a cul-de-sac. Steve Bruce’s wing-backs are able to come out of the back five to close down a winger safe in the knowledge they are covered by the outside centre-back, and consequently attempting to penetrate the flanks was never likely to work.

Spurs switched to a 4-4-2 in the second half, and yet Son (now on the right) was still too wide. By the time Lo Celso and Eriksen took the field and, still in a 4-4-2, Lo Celso and Son began drifting inside into the half-spaces, it was too late; Newcastle were confident and deservedly held on.

4) Villa take advantage of Everton’s flat-footed midfield

Aston Villa’s primary tactical approach at Villa Park this season will be to play assertively, with focus on bursting forward in numbers, using overlapping full-backs, and taking quick set-pieces; the aim is to blow opponents away by capitalising on the raucous atmosphere inside the stadium.

It’s still a work in progress – Villa are struggling to build possession out from the back, with Tyrone Mings hitting 16 hopeful long balls – but against Everton, Dean Smith’s side were considerably tactically improved.

Having lacked guile in the final third against Bournemouth, Jota’s selection – in place of Anwar El Ghazi – gave Villa more subtle creativity on Friday while new right-back Frederic Guilbert replaced the piercing runs made by El Ghazi.

Jota and Guilbert combined for Villa’s opener, a move instigated by Jack Grealish’s quick free-kick – a deliberate tactic encouraged by Smith. The Villa manager spoke after the game of picking Jota to “cause problems” against Everton’s high line, which is exactly how Wesley opened his account.

But Villa’s sharp attacking football was particularly effective because Morgan Schneiderlin and Andre Gomes are so flat-footed; Gomes was dribbled five times on Friday, including being nutmegged by El Ghazi for Villa’s second goal.

Above: Andre Gomes duels lost vs Aston Villa

Sluggish and reduced to fearful sideways passing, Everton’s midfield pair were clearly targeted by Smith and his insistence on frenetic counter-attacks.

5) Pressing problems persist for Chelsea and Norwich

Nobody was surprised to see goals at Carrow Road on Saturday. Norwich and Chelsea are both expansive on the ball, but off it both engage in a form of pressing that is not synced enough to function effectively.

Chelsea, without N’Golo Kante, deployed a three-man midfield with both Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic pushing ahead of an isolated Jorginho.

Against Norwich’s attacking 4-2-3-1 – in which Todd Cantwell, Marco Stiepermann, and Emiliano Buendia roam freely in the number ten space – it would have made more sense for Kovacic to sit in alongside Jorginho, but instead he pressed Norwich’s deeper midfielders.

Barkley did likewise, essentially meaning Chelsea’s midfield simply applied pressure to the nearest man, rather than cut off spaces or act as a collective. The defensive line did not push up to help the press, nor did the midfield show any togetherness in their actions.

Individualism in the press also plagued Norwich’s performance. Neither sitting back nor pushing up together, those onrushing midfielders – acting alone – opened up huge spaces between the lines of defence and midfield for Mason Mount, Barkley, and Christian Pulisic to create chances.

Both teams need to work on their off-the-ball shape.

Galatasaray reveal negotiations with Falcao over move away from Monaco

The forward is poised to swap Monaco for Istanbul after Galatasaray announced they have started negotiations over a transfer

Radamel Falcao is set to join Galatasaray after the Turkish giants revealed talks are underway to sign the veteran striker from Monaco.

Falcao, who is yet to feature for Monaco this season due to an ankle injury, has been linked to Galatasaray throughout the transfer window.

The 33-year-old is now poised to swap Monaco for Istanbul after Galatasaray announced they have started negotiations over the transfer of the Colombian.

“Negotiations have started with the footballer and club AS Monaco on the transfer of Radamel Falcao to our club,” Galatasaray’s statement read on Saturday.

Falcao – contracted until 2020 – has called Monaco home since arriving from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in 2013.

The Colombia international helped Monaco to Ligue 1 glory in 2016-17, while he has scored more than 80 goals across all competitions for the French club.

Falcao, who spent time away on loan at Manchester United and Chelsea in 2014-15 and 2015-16, scored 16 goals for Monaco last season.

The forward made clear earlier in the summer that he would be looking at options to move away from the Ligue 1 side.

“The truth is that I still have a year of contract and the club did not offer me an extension,” he said following a friendly win over Sampdoria.

“So I have to think about my future, my family.

“I am studying the offers I have been offered. These are good opportunities for my career.

“I have to think about my family.”

Monaco, however, seemed to want him to stay and play for another season.

Club CEO Oleg Petrov warned the Colombian earlier this summer that he would need to respect his contract.

“Falcao is a great professional,” Petrov said at the time. “He has ambitions obviously, he wants to play the Champions League and we understand him, but we want him to stay at the club, he has a contract and he has to respect it.”

It now seems as though the move will go through and the 33-year-old will get his desired move away.

‘Man City may live to rue letting Utd land Maguire’ – Laporte injury highlights problem, says Neville

The former Red Devils defender has aired his surprise at seeing the Blues pass up the opportunity to compete for a proven successor to Vincent Kompany

Manchester City may live to regret their decision not to fight harder for Harry Maguire, says Gary Neville, with arch-rivals United now boasting a centre-half option who would have been a perfect successor to Vincent Kompany and cover for the injured Aymeric Laporte.

The Blues opted against bringing in another proven performer at the heart of their back four during the summer transfer window.

Long-serving skipper Kompany departed, but Pep Guardiola decided to keep faith with the alternatives already at his disposal.

He does still have plenty of international talent on his books, but has suffered an untimely setback after seeing Laporte ruled out with a knee problem that may yet require surgery.

Neville believes City should have competed with United for £80 million ($96m) man Maguire, with it now clear that the England international would have been a shrewd addition to the ranks of the Premier League champions.

The former Red Devils defender told Sky Sports: “I said a few weeks ago that I was struggling to understand why City didn’t follow through on Harry Maguire with Vincent Kompany leaving the club.

“I thought Kompany won them the league in the last 10 matches of last season when he played in all those games. Forget the Leicester moment which was just spectacular, I thought his leadership held them together at a time when Liverpool were applying pressure like you wouldn’t believe.

“In terms of that leader-type figure, I think Laporte has got that.”

Neville added: “I think this will cost City points.

“To be fair, there is no one better in the world at coaching than Pep Guardiola, full stop. And there is no one better at making what would be make-shift centre-backs play well.

“What I would say is that if Laporte is out for a long time, I think it will cost City points because he is a dominant centre-back. I saw him in Spain three times and he’s a great player. It’s a real worry for City.

“Maguire would’ve been ideal. Manchester United did well to get him but I am surprised City didn’t really go for him alongside United. Maybe they did and they just pulled out because of the money in the end or whatever it was.

“I just think with Kompany leaving, he was Belgian, but he was an old-fashioned throw your head at it centre-back in both boxes that when you go to certain grounds in the Premier league you play.

“When balls flew into the box and the pressure-built, Vincent Kompany stood tall and made sure they all left.”

'Ronaldo told me good things!' – Jese says Juve star guided him to Sporting move

Click:postpartum hair loss

The winger moved to the Portuguese club on loan and the Spaniard was joined by Yannick Bolasie.

Jese Rodriguez said he is relishing the chance to play for Portuguese giants Sporting CP after speaking to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Monday’s deadline day saw Jese join Sporting on a season-long loan deal from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The loan includes a purchase option for former Real Madrid forward Jese, who is contracted to PSG until 2021.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo emerged from Sporting’s youth system before joining Manchester United in 2003 and Jese said: “I am very happy for the opportunity Sporting CP is giving me. It is a historic club in Portugal.

“I have a friend named Cristiano Ronaldo who has always told me very good things about this club, which created him from a young age. I am very excited to start training with my colleagues.

“I have seen the players the team have and I think we can do something important. We will fight for all competitions. With joy and work we can achieve good things.”

On Juventus superstar Ronaldo, Jese, 26, added: “He told me it was a very important club for him and he was very fond of Sporting CP.”

Jese originally broke through with Real Madrid in 2013-14, scoring 18 goals in 94 matches for Real Madrid before departing the club.

He went on to join PSG, but featured just 15 times while scoring two goals from the French club.

The winger experienced loan spells away from the club, joining Las Palmas, Stoke City and Real Betis.

Sporting also signed winger Yannick Bolasie on loan from Premier League outfit Everton on Monday.

The Primeira Liga club – who managed to keep captain Bruno Fernandes despite reported interest from Real Madrid – are fifth in the league after four games.

Sporting finished third in the league last season, locking down a spot in the Europa League in the process.

They were grouped in with the likes of PSV, LASK and Rosenborg in last week’s draw for the competition’s group stage.

However, following the international break, Sporting will face Boavista on September 15 before heading to the Netherlands to face PSV in their Europa League opener.

2020 Games criticized by Tokyo association for the blind for lack of ticket info in Braille or on CDs

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has not prepared ticket purchasing instructions in Braille or on a CD for those with visual impairments, drawing criticism from groups supporting such individuals.

The Tokyo Welfare Association of the Blind requested these services but Tokyo 2020, which responded by explaining that the home page has a voice-over function, has not complied.

“Tokyo 2020 is going against its own policy to be barrier-free,” the association said.

The Tokyo Welfare Association of the Blind has about 1300 members with visual impairments.

Tokyo 2020’s accessibility guidelines state that “all documents intended for public use should be provided in braille, text data, large print, or audio formats.”

In July, the association requested that documents be made available in Braille.

In response, Tokyo 2020 made the home page for ticket purchases available in an audio format and established a hotline.

“A decision was made not to create Braille documents and CDs since they cannot be corrected later,” the organizing committee said in response to media requests.

The guidelines are only an example of how information can be shared, Tokyo 2020 explained, adding that “people who can’t read Braille can still take advantage of audio voice-overs on the home page. Moving forward, it’s unlikely that we will provide information in Braille.”

According to Tokyo Welfare Association of the Blind, a request was made to the city to improve the availability of information for those with visual impairments. Although an audio supplement was added for the guidebook for the 2020 Games, many still had trouble finding information on how to buy tickets.

The organization also said many elderly people have trouble using computers and smartphones, both of which are the primary method through which tickets are sold and purchased. The Tokyo 2020 home page contains a massive amount of information, making it difficult to find the voice-over functions and hotlines in the first place.

Yoshihiko Sasagawa, the chairman of Tokyo Welfare Association of the Blind, said he hoped that at least the most important information about purchasing tickets would be made available in Braille or on CDs.

“This is a far cry from an inclusive society,” Sasagawa said.

The Japan Federation of the Blind said “it’s strange that Tokyo 2020 isn’t sharing information according to its own guidelines.”

Three Vietnamese sue Fukushima firm over decontamination work at crippled nuclear facility

Three Vietnamese have sued a construction firm for damages, claiming they were exposed to radiation after the company had them engage in decontamination work related to the March 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima Prefecture.

The lawsuit was filed with Fukushima District Court’s branch in the city of Koriyama, a labor union supporting the plaintiffs said at a news conference in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The Vietnamese people are demanding that the Koriyama-based firm, Hiwada, pay a total of ¥12 million in compensation to them.

The three came to Japan in July 2015 to learn construction skills under the technical training program for foreign nationals.

But they had to engage in decontamination work mainly in Koriyama for about two years from March 2016, after the triple meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.’s tsunami-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.

They had to do piping work for the sewage system in the town of Namie, which had been designated as a no-entry zone at the time.

The three plaintiffs were on the job for about 300 to 420 days. They were not given sufficient education about the risk of radiation exposure based on the Industrial Safety and Health Law, according to the petition.

The company has admitted to having them do the decontamination work.

“We had to do a lot of decontamination work. We were not informed that it was a dangerous job,” one of the three Vietnamese said through a lawyer.

“I’m very worried about my health in the future,” the 36-year-old plaintiff said.

In March 2018, another Vietnamese trainee hired by a construction firm in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, said at a news conference in Tokyo that he had been misled into conducting decontamination work in Fukushima Prefecture.

A probe by the government last year found that four companies used foreign trainees in radioactive cleanup work related to Fukushima No. 1.

The Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare have released statements saying that decontamination work does not fit the purpose of the trainee program.

Team including Kyoto University researchers succeeds in recognizing chimpanzee faces using AI

KYOTO – A team including Kyoto University researchers has said it succeeded in automatically recognizing the faces of wild chimpanzees with an accuracy of over 90 percent using an artificial intelligence system.

Kyoto University conducts research on wild chimpanzees in a field site in Guinea in West Africa set up in 1976.

Using the AI system’s deep-learning methods, the University of Oxford analyzed a total of 50 hours of footage recorded between 2000 and 2013 by three cameras at the field site on the top of a small mountain.

The system detected some 10 million images of chimpanzee faces from the footage, according to the team, whose study is to be published Thursday on an electronic edition of the U.S. journal Science Advances.

The system improved its face-recognition ability as time advanced, recognizing the identities of 23 individuals with an accuracy of 92.5 percent. For sex recognition, accuracy reached 96.2 percent.

Chimpanzee faces were recognized accurately even if they were captured only partially in analyzed images. Analysis of face and other images found that two female chimpanzees came to live away from their group as they aged.

Tetsuro Matsuzawa, distinguished professor at Kyoto University, said AI systems can process amounts of data too vast for humans to handle.

“The new analytical method for field research has clearly shown changes in a society of chimpanzees,” he said.

Luiz joined Arsenal after ‘annoying’ Lampard at Chelsea

David Luiz frustrated Frank Lampard with his failure to stick to the Chelsea manager’s game plan in the club’s pre-season friendlies, according to reports.

Lampard, who had played alongside Luiz at Stamford Bridge, allowed the Brazil international to join Arsenal for £8million.

The new Gunners signing has already been labeled a “show pony” by former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan and criticised by others after a couple of poor displays.

And The Athletic claims that ‘the situation came to a head’ at Chelsea after the Blues’ 5-3 victory over Red Bull Salzburg in a pre-season friendly match.

‘Words were exchanged between them’ after Luiz allowed his man a free header for one of Salzburg’s goals, while Lampard ‘was also annoyed about the 32-year-old delivering too many long balls from deep when the game plan he wants to instil is to play out from the back.’

Following the incident, a move to Arsenal was ‘explored by his agent Kia Joorabchian’ with Luiz concerned that he wouldn’t figure in Lampard’s plans.

Man Utd, Arsenal target responds to summer transfer interest

Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans admits he was “happy” with the interest from “certain big clubs” over the summer.

The Belgium international penned a four-year deal at the King Power Stadium over the summer after spending the second half of last campaign on loan from Monaco.

The 22-year-old was reportedly one of ‘three or four’ on Manchester United’s shortlist to replace Paul Pogba if he left the club during the summer transfer window.

However, the Frenchman stayed and Tielemans – who was also linked with Arsenal – thinks he made the “right” choice for his fledgling career.

“During the transfer window, I was happy of the interest of certain big clubs,” Tielemans said on international duty with Belgium.

“I needed to make a choice for my young career and I think it was the right one. To arrive off the back of a €45m transfer doesn’t change anything.

“They already knew me at Leicester. My loan spell went very good. I wanted to continue playing in this club.”

Lloris admits there is ‘something missing’ at Tottenham

Hugo Lloris thinks “there’s something missing” at Tottenham as they look to mount a Premier League title challenge this season.

A 3-1 win at home versus Aston Villa has been followed up with two decent draws at Manchester City and Arsenal, either side of a loss against Newcastle United.

That means Spurs have taken five points from their opening four matches this season and Lloris has urged Tottenham to become more consistent.

“Liverpool and Man City have the experience and they are really competitive,” Lloris told reporters.

“I think, at the moment, there’s something missing from us.

“We will see later in the season because things turn very quickly in football.

“The most important thing is we focus on ourselves, to get points, to get consistency in the league. And we will see where we are in the table in April, in March.

“That is the moment when you can win or lose European places or trophies. At the moment, we don’t want to lose focus with that type of question.”

Lloris added: “Unfortunately at Tottenham we didn’t have the start we expected.

“Even though we got good results against City and Arsenal away from home, we should have done better against Newcastle.

“We all know the importance of home games and when I talk about consistency, we have to capable of winning that type of game.

“There’s now already a gap between them – Liverpool and Man City – and us.”
