Man City avoid transfer ban for breaching FIFA regulations around signing minors – fined £315,000 instead

Other clubs committing similar offences were unable to bring in new players during summer and winter windows but the Citizens needn’t fear

Manchester City have avoided a transfer ban after FIFA found the Premier League club guilty of falling foul of regulations regarding the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18.

Instead, football’s governing body has fined the Abu Dhabi-owned side CHF 370,000 (£315,000/$380,000), which may come as a surprise to some after Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea were banned from signing new players as punishment for similar offences.

Chelsea are currently serving a transfer ban for breaching article 19 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players in the case of 29 minors, and the club was unable to sign players this summer as part of a one-year punishment.

Barcelona, meanwhile, served a ban in 2014 while Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid were also hit with punishments for the same offence.

City have no such complications to deal with, however, with a statement on FIFA’s official website stating: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned English club Manchester City FC for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18.

“Manchester City FC was found to have breached, amongst others, article 19 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.

“The Disciplinary Committee took into account the fact that Manchester City FC accepted its responsibility and sanctioned the club with a fine of CHF 370,000.

“The protection of minors is a key element in FIFA’s overall regulatory framework relating to the transfer of players, and the effective enforcement of these rules is paramount, as has also been confirmed on various occasions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“The decision issued by the Disciplinary Committee was notified today.

Manchester City had also vehemently denied reports that the club was facing a ban from the Champions League as the result of the investigation.

UEFA had launched a formal investigation in March 2019 following allegations made by Der Spiegel, which were in turn based on information obtained from whistleblower organisation Football Leaks.

The reigning Premier League champions, who have won the league each of the last two seasons with historic point hauls, opened their domestic campaign this past weekend with a 5-0 battering of West Ham.

Also Community Shield winners following a victory over Liverpool, Manchester City will face Tottenham on Saturday in their next Premier League match.

Sturridge delays decision on next club despite Trabzonspor offer

The England striker will wait to the end of the transfer window before making his final decision on a future move to Turkey

Daniel Sturridge has delayed making a decision on his next club despite being offered a lucrative contract by Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The former Liverpool striker’s agent, Clifford Bloxham, travelled with the player’s uncle and manager, Dean Sturridge, and his mother, Grace, to meet with Trabzonspor vice-president Sertac Guven last week.

Goal can confirm they offered the England international a two-year deal worth around €3 million (£2.8m/$3.3m) per season – one of the biggest in the club’s history – but are yet to receive a definitive answer on whether Sturridge will accept it.

Despite reported interest from Real Betis, Bologna, Marseille and Besiktas, Trabzonspor are the club to have made the best offer for the 29-year-old free agent.

MLS side D.C. United and clubs in Qatar have also been credited as potential destinations while Sturridge could yet agree a move to the Premier League.

Clubs in the English top flight have until September 2 to name their final squads for the first half of the campaign, and as such Sturridge could still be signed in the next two weeks.

Having joined from Chelsea in January 2013, Sturridge struggled with injuries for much of his time at Liverpool.

The striker scored 21 goals in a memorable 2013-14 campaign, but since that season has failed to start more than 11 league matches for the Anfield outfit.

In his final year with Liverpool he made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals, and was an unused substitute in June’s Champions League final victory over Tottenham.

Overall, Sturridge scored 67 goals in 160 appearances during his time with Liverpool.

“Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told the club’s official website upon confirmation of his departure.

“He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important.”

Bayern Munich confirm Cuisance set to join from Borussia Monchengladbach

The France U20 international will help reinforce the centre of the Bundesliga champions’ midfield

Bayern Munich have confirmed the imminent signing of midfielder Mickael Cuisance from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 20-year-old has developed into one of the Bundesliga’s top young midfielders since he joined Monchengladbach from Nancy in his native France in 2017.

Cuisance has made 35 Bundesliga appearances over two seasons, tallying three assists.

“After two seasons with Borussia, Mickael Cuisance will leave to join Bayern Munich with immediate effect,” Gladbach confirmed in a statement.

“The 20-year-old midfielder completed a medical in Munich on Friday, with both clubs reaching an agreement on the transfer deal on Saturday.”

Cuisance has represented France at every youth level and started all four games for his country this summer at the U20 World Cup, where they fell 3-2 to the United States in the round of 16.

The midfielder will become the fifth French player on Bayern’s roster, joining Kingsley Coman, Corentin Tolisso, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard.

Like Cuisance, Hernandez and Pavard only joined the club this summer, with Ivan Perisic and Fiete Arp the club’s other summer reinforcements thus far.

Cuisance will help the club strengthen in the middle of the pitch, joining Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara as players able to play as a holding midfielder.

“Mickael has his strengths in possession football. He has great technique, a strong left foot and a great mentality,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said of the midfielder.

Bayern failed to get their Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start on Friday, as they surprisingly drew Hertha 2-2 at the Allianz Arena.

Robert Lewandowski’s brace was not enough to secure all three points for Niko Kovac’s side, who nevertheless had a productive day off the pitch.

In addition to Cuisance’s arrival, Bayern also confirmed the imminent signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a one-year loan with a purchase option.

Bayern will look to earn their first Bundesliga win of the season next weekend when they travel to face Schalke.

Niko Kovac’s side are looking to win their eighth consecutive Bundesliga title this season, with Borussia Dortmund the last club other than Bayern to lift the trophy when they accomplished the feat in 2011-12.

'Lots more to come' from Pulisic at Chelsea – Lampard

The Blues boss says all signs are pointing in the right direction for the USMNT star, who notched his first assist in his first start for the club

All signs are pointing in the right direction for Christian Pulisic at Chelsea, according to manager Frank Lampard.

After making his first official appearance for the club as a substitute in the Premier League opener against Manchester United, a match which Chelsea lost 4-0, Pulisic was handed a start in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash against Liverpool.

The 20-year-old USA international made his mark as well, setting up Olivier Giroud for Chelsea’s first goal with a pass that split Liverpool’s back line to leave the French forward in alone.

Pulisic, bought from Borussia Dortmund for £58 million ($70m), came to Chelsea with high expectations, and Lampard believes the early returns shouldn’t do anything to diminish those.

“Yeah I was pleased and there is a lot more to come,” the Blues boss said of the U.S. national team star following the match. “The expectancy is right, he is a big signing for us but you have to remember his age. He’s 20 and come into the league, into this game, against Liverpool, one of the most intense teams in football.

“It took a bit of time early in the game to get his feeling. But once he did, you could see his confidence in carrying the ball and to create.

“I am really happy with him. There is lots, lots more to come. Again, [he’s showing] all the good signs for what he can be for the club.”

Pulisic nearly had his first goal for the club as well, only to have a fine strike ruled out for offside, but the strong first-half showing wasn’t enough for Chelsea, who fell in a shootout following a 2-2 draw through 120 minutes.

The U.S. international was replaced on 74 minutes by Mason Mount, who also saw a goal ruled out, and Lampard felt a bit of bad luck may have been the downfall of his side on the night.

“For me I felt we were the stronger team,” he said.

“Maybe some bad luck and at times some bad finishing, we need to be more clinical.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action on Sunday with the club looking to avoid a third defeat in a row as they face off against Leicester City.

Swedish TV channel deny ignoring Man Utd star’s goal

TV4 have denied ignoring Victor Lindelof’s goal for Sweden against the Faroe Islands, in the midst of speculation over the Manchester United man’s commitment to the national side.

The centre-back was called-up for the international fixtures in March, but decided to opt out of the squad.

After his withdrawal, TV4  reported internal conflict as the reason for his withdrawal.

The 25-year-old was heavily criticised by Swedish fans and he even received death threats for pulling out of the squad.

In fact, his wife Maja Nilsson Lindelöf was due to give birth to the couple’s first child, and he said he wanted to support his family.

Lindelof scored in Sweden’s a 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands on Thursday and TV4 decided not to show the goal or mention the player in their highlights package of the game, reports Sport Witness.

Sportbladet got in contact with TV4 and spoke to press officer Ludvig Ternstedt.

He said: “No no. It has absolutely nothing to do with the boycott. Sometimes the editors adjust the goals to be displayed, depending on the amount of time available.

“But I can guarantee that it has absolutely nothing to do with the boycott. In our highlights after the match and in Sport’s evening broadcast yesterday we showed all the goals.”

The Man Utd youngster faster than James and Rashford

Manchester United academy prospect Deji Sotona is reportedly the fastest player at the club.

New United signing Daniel James’ speed has been well documented as the Welshman has made a great start to life at Old Trafford, but he is a slouch compared to Sotona.

The 16-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international, has been clocked at a maximum speed of 22.9mph – nearly 2mph faster than James, according to the Mail Online.

Sotona, who plays for United’s Under 18s, has been tipped by coaches at Old Trafford to break into the first-team.

Sotona was Ireland’s national Under 14 sprint champion at the age of 12, so his speed has been well known for a while.

The winger — who has been likened to Ryan Giggs at old Trafford — is eligible to represent England, something the Football Association are said to be aware of.

In tests at United’s Carrington training ground Marcus Rashford (22.18mph), Daniel James (22.07mph) and Tahith Chong (22.36mph) were among the quickest.

Solskjaer tells Man Utd star his ‘chances will come’

Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong turned down loan moves after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told him he would get opportunities to feature for the first team this season.

The 19-year-old made four first team appearances last season, including the 3-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League, but he is yet to feature so far this season.

Chong was given the option to return to his native Holland on loan this summer, but rejected the opportunity to join PSV or former club Feyenoord.

He is hopeful of forcing his way into Solskjaer’s first team plans this season, and has said the manager has provided him with optimism.

“Ole tells me to keep working hard and my chances will come. That’s nice to hear,” Chong told Voetbal Primeur.

“There are a few players who are left and I’m climbing up the pecking order.

“It’s always nice to come back to the Netherlands, but in the end I have to do what I find best for myself. That’s why I decided to stay.”

The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Dutch under-21 side ahead of their European championship qualifier with Cyprus.

Chong was a regular in United’s pre-season campaign and has revealed that a new contract is being discussed.

“Of course we are talking, but it’s still too early to say anything about it,” Chong added.

“The season is still long and we will see what happens. There are a lot of competitions coming up and I will focus on that.”

Neville: Why City could regret not beating Man Utd to Maguire

Gary Neville thinks that Manchester City could regret missing out on the opportunity to sign Harry Maguire in the summer.

The defender ended up signing for Manchester United in a deal worth a reported £80million, with Pep Guardiola later conceding that City couldn’t afford the centre-back.

City have lost Aymeric Laporte to injury already this season, while they allowed Vincent Kompany to leave this summer and join Anderlecht as player-manager.

And, in hindsight, Neville thinks they could rue the fact they didn’t invest in Maguire in the transfer window.

“If Laporte is out for a long period of time, I think it will cost City points,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“He is a dominant centre-back. He is a brilliant player, Laporte.

“I just look at it and think it’s a real worry. Maguire would have been ideal.

“I think Manchester United did really well to get him, and I’m surprised City didn’t go with them to get him – maybe they did and maybe they pulled out with the money or whatever it was.

“I just think Kompany leaving, he was an old-fashioned, throw your head at it centre-back in both boxes.

“When you go to certain grounds in the Premier League and you have seen it today [Sunday] when balls are flying into the box, Kompany [would be] stood tall.

“That’s the one downer out of the weekend for Manchester City.”

Greenwood is more of a natural finisher than Rashford or Martial – Solskjaer

The Norwegian boss insists the teenage striker has more of a clinical edge to his game than the first choice duo at Old Trafford

Mason Greenwood is “more of a natural finisher” than Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, according to Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils sold Belgian centre-forward Romelu Lukaku to Inter earlier this month, leaving Martial, Rashford and Greenwood as the only remaining senior strikers on the books at the Theatre of Dreams.

Greenwood, who signed his first professional contract with United in 2018, scored three goals during the club’s pre-season tour, leading to calls for him to earn a regular spot in Solskjaer’s starting XI.

However, the Norwegian ultimately opted to start Martial through the middle for United’s season opener against Chelsea on August 11, with Rashford pushed out onto the left.

Rashford grabbed a brace and Martial also found the net in a 4-0 victory, but Solskjaer insists that Greenwood has the upper hand on his attacking colleagues in one key area.

The 17-year-old came on as a late substitute against the Blues and will be in contention to retain a place on the bench for United’s trip to Molineux to face Wolves on Monday, with his manager’s latest words of praise likely to fuel his desire to make an impact.

When asked who was the better natural finisher out of Martial and Rashford, Solskjaer told MUTV: “Natural finisher? Well, they’ve still got a way to go, because Mason’s more of a natural finisher than those two.”

The Red Devils head coach also discussed how he plans to rotate his forward line throughout the 2019-20 campaign, adding: “Anthony’s had spells where he’s played No.9 or centre forward under Louis van Gaal. Then he’s played on the left the last few years. I think him and Marcus are both capable of playing both positions.

”Sometimes, it will be Marcus playing through the middle and Anthony on the left, or Dan James on the left and one of them on the right, but, of course, the goals are scored from between the posts and not the worldies that we’ve seen them score, both of them.

“Marcus and Anthony, curlers up in the top corner. I want both of them to score the easy goals. You don’t have to work too hard to score them, just a little bit of movement. It was a great counterattack [against Chelsea], great runs by Anthony.

“I think maybe he felt he should have got the first pass, which went out wide to Jesse [Lingard] and he stopped. But then, he got himself back in a good position and, even though he might have mis-hit it, it went in. So, if he can get five extra goals like this every season, both of them, that’s 10.”

Martial was happy to grab a poachers goal against Chelsea, with his sights now set on reaching a “much higher” scoring total come the end of the season.

He told United’s official website: “I guess I have always tended to score quite nice goals and so, if I managed to score more of this kind of goal, in addition to the more spectacular ones, then I’d end up with a much higher goals total come the end of the season.”
