Lampard rejects Luiz strike claims but was happy for Chelsea to do business with Arsenal

The Blues boss says a deadline-day deal between two Premier League rivals was agreed after discussions between player and coach at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has rejected any suggestion that David Luiz went on strike prior to completing a deadline-day move to Arsenal.

Reports leading up to the final day of the Premier League window suggested that the Brazilian was refusing to train with the Blues as he pushed for a late summer switch.

He got his wish as an £8 million ($10m) transfer was made across London on Thursday.

Lampard has now been quizzed on how that agreement came to pass and insists the decision to part ways was amicable and not forced by either side.

Explaining his decision to offload Luiz, the Blues manager said: “We had some conversations over the last week, honest ones, and the conclusion was that he should move on.

“It’s a position that I have a lot of competition. Everyone has to understand that.

“He has moved on and we wish him the absolute best, because he has been a big part of our history.

“There wasn’t any strike. No fall-outs, just honest conversations.

“As a player I want that as a manager, and I think I got that from David. Him not training was a decision I made as I felt that was best at the time.”

Lampard is not expecting there to be any further outgoings at Stamford Bridge with the window now closed for clubs in the top two tiers of English football.

He added: “I don’t expect there to be. We will see over the next few weeks.”

Chelsea are not in a position to bring anyone else into their squad, as they work under the constraints of a two-window transfer ban, and Lampard continues to try and see the positives in that.

He added on being forced to watch on as rivals scrambled around to get bodies on board before the deadline: “It is what it is. We have to remain competitive while we are in this position.

“With the ban it has been easy to write off this squad, and I don’t write off this squad at all.

“I think that what is important is that you have a target within the group. What matters is how we approach things. We will see how we go.

“Manchester City and Liverpool showed there was a gap, everyone has to make it up.

“We will aim to win and of course we want to be in the Champions League every year. We are realistic and we just have to work our hardest.

“Yes, [it is bridgeable] because this is football. One of the beauties is that you start again fresh.”

Chelsea are set to open a new era under Lampard’s guidance on Sunday when they kick off their 2019-20 campaign with a trip to Manchester United.

Barcelona goalkeeper Neto fractures wrist in training

The Brazilian was brought in to provide goalkeeping cover, but the Blaugrana will start the season without their new signing

Barcelona goalkeeper Neto is facing a spell on the sidelines after fracturing a bone in his left wrist.

The 30-year-old arrived at Camp Nou from Valencia during the off-season in a deal worth an initial €26 million (£23m/$30m.

With Jasper Cillessen moving the opposite way, Neto was brought in to provide competition for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But Ernesto Valverde now faces being without his back-up keeper for the opening stages of the season as he picked up an injury in the final training session ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Napoli.

Barcelona announced on their official website that Neto has been diagnosed with a scaphoid bone fracture and the extent of the injury will be determined on Monday.

Reports in Spain suggest the Brazilian, who featured in Barcelona’s first four pre-season matches, is likely to miss five weeks of action.

While Neto’s time at Barcelona has started in rough fashion, the former Valencia keeper recently described his move to Camp Nou as a dream.

“It’s a dream for any footballer. When you talk about Barcelona, ever player at the highest level wishes to play for a team like this one,” Neto told SPORT.

“It’s very different. It means your hard work has paid off when your club can compete for every trophy available.

“For me, as someone who likes to always win, to compete at the highest level is the best.”

Barcelona begin their La Liga campaign with a trip to Athletic Bilbao on Friday and face Real Betis and Osasuna before the end of the month.

The reigning Spanish champions will also likely be without Lionel Messi for their season opener, with Valverde declaring he’s a major doubt due to a calf strain.

“He’s in the recovery process and I don’t know if he will be ready for the start of La Liga,” Valverde told a news conference after a 4-0 win over Napoli in Michigan on Saturday.

“It’s looking difficult.”

Barcelona have won their last four games of pre-season with their final victory over Napoli seeing Antoine Griezmann net his first goal for the club.

Arsenal youngster Nketiah completes Leeds loan move

The highly-rated forward will spend a season in the Championship despite Unai Emery suggesting he would get his chance in the first team

Eddie Nketiah has joined Leeds on a season-long loan from Arsenal, it has been confirmed.

The 20-year-old impressed during the Gunners’ pre-season tour and coach Unai Emery suggested that the forward would be given a chance in the Premier League in 2019-20.

Bristol City had also been keen on a temporary move for the highly-rated striker, who suggested last month he was open to a temporary switch.

Leeds eventually won out in the race, having stepped up their interest after Kemar Roofe left Elland Road to join Belgian side Anderlecht.

“Leeds United are delighted to announce the loan signing of Eddie Nketiah,” a statement on the Championship club’s website read, adding that the youngster will wear the No.14 shirt this season.

Nketiah joined the north London side from Chelsea in 2015 and has made 19 appearances for the senior team after excelling in the youth system.

The England Under 21 international made his debut in a Europa League clash against BATE Borisov in September 2017. In his next game – a Carabao Cup clash against Norwich – he scored just 15 seconds after coming off the bench and then netted a second in extra-time.

Nketiah played nine times for Emery’s team last term and scored in the final Premier League game of the season as they beat Burnley 3-1.

He is Leeds’ sixth signing of the transfer window, as Marcelo Bielsa’s team have already landed Jack Clarke, who rejoined on loan from Tottenham, Helder Costa, Jack Harrison, Illan Meslier and Ben White.

His move to the Championship club was announced on a busy deadline day for Arsenal, who also agreed an £8 million ($10m) deal for Chelsea defender David Luiz and have finalised a move for Kieran Tierney from Celtic.

The Europa League runners-up have already signed Nicolas Pepe from Lille in a club-record deal, William Saliba from Saint-Etienne and Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, while Dani Ceballos joined on loan from Real Madrid.

'My world has fallen apart' – Neymar 'relieved' but still upset after rape case is closed

After a Brazilian judge closed the investigation into the PSG forward, he issued a statement via social media

Neymar is relieved the investigation into rape allegations against him has been closed but the Paris Saint-Germain forward says he will never forget the damage it caused him and his loved ones.

Brazilian judge Ana Paula Vieira de Moraes closed the case last week after investigators at the Sao Paulo police station where a woman made the accusation in May concluded an indictment was not possible due to a lack of evidence.

Neymar vehemently denied claims he raped the woman in a Paris hotel room on May 15.

He posted on Instagram on Friday: “This will be a chapter in my life that I’ll never forget. For many reasons. The main one ‘THE DAMAGE’ it caused to me, to my family and to all the people that really know me.

“I’ll be sincere and I won’t say I’m happy, but I’m relieved. The wound will always be here, so that I can remember how the human being is capable of doing good things but also BAD ones!

“Yes, my world has fallen apart and I fell to the ground … but as a jiu-jitsu legend says: ‘For many people the ground is the end of everything but for us that’s just the beginning.’

“May it be the beginning not only for me but for all those who suffered this kind of false allegations and MAINLY to all WOMEN who are REALLY a victim of this act.

“My wish is that you can all be strong, that you can fight and that you can get all you deserve. Thank God FOR EVERYTHING, always.”

In an attempt to clear his name in June, Neymar posted a video to Instagram in which he claimed the allegations were part of an extortion attempt, showing his WhatsApp history with someone purported to be his accuser.

Neymar could yet face action for cybercrime, as the video appeared to include intimate messages and images of another person, which is illegal under Brazilian law.

He testified in the investigation in Sao Paulo on June 7.

On Friday, Neymar’s father spoke out about his son’s turbulent summer, saying that everything he has been through has made him a stronger person.

Man Utd 'moving in the right direction' with summer signings – Ferdinand

The former United defender says his old side are progressing but knows that supporters won’t expect too much too soon

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United are moving in the right direction but insists that fans must be patient as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goes about rebuilding his first-team squad.

Harry Maguire this week joined Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in signing for United ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season, and there could still be further business done before Thursday night’s transfer deadline.

And BT Sport pundit Ferdinand, who spent 12 years as a player at Old Trafford, says the moves they have made make a lot of sense as Solskjaer begins to see his vision coming together.

“I think it’s a step in the right direction,” Ferdinand told Goal. “They’ve got young, hungry players, people who are looking to prove themselves, not coming for the wrong reasons.

“They’ve come for all the right reasons, which are to help the football club improve, to improve themselves as players, and that’s a great step in the right direction obviously.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily about where the players are from, I think it’s a case of, are they the right people? Have they got the right work ethic? Have they got the right philosophies? Have they got the right beliefs? And are they hard-working?

“I think if you get those things in a dressing room and that overrides backgrounds and where they’re from.”

Ferdinand adds that United supporters are savvy enough not to expect too much too soon from their evolving senior squad.

“I don’t think this is something we can call an overnight turnaround, it’s going to take time and I think Man Utd fans are not silly,” he continued.

“They’re good football people who understand the game and if they can see that the club is going in the right direction and their philosophies are right for the club, I think they’ll back the manager in charge and they’ll back the team.

“In recent years there have been moments when they’ve probably thought, ‘Where are we going here?’ There’s not been a clear picture.”

United begin their 2019-20 assault when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

BT Sport is gearing up for its biggest season yet, with 52 Premier League matches and every UEFA Champions League game live. New for this season, BT Sport Ultimate will provide viewers with the very best viewing experience possible. Visit here for more details.

Bournemouth in talks with Liverpool over loan move for Harry Wilson

The Reds are willing to allow the Welshman to leave in a temporary deal, with the club confident that the Cherries will aid the player’s development

Bournemouth are in talks with Liverpool over a loan move for winger Harry Wilson.

The Cherries are keen to bring the Wales international to the Vitality Stadium, and have made an official approach to sign the 22-year-old before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Negotiations are ongoing, with sources confirming to Goal that Tuesday is likely to be crucial in terms of finalising terms.

Wilson, it is understood, is keen on the idea of a Premier League loan, which would enable him to gather valuable top-flight experience. Having impressed in the Championship at both Derby County and Hull City over the last 18 months, the youngster is eager to ensure his career continues on an upwards trajectory.

Liverpool were initially against the idea of a loan switch, preferring either to sell the player permanently or keep him as part of Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad. Wilson has featured regularly during pre-season, scoring against both Borussia Dortmund and Lyon, but was left out of the squad for Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.

The Reds believe the Wrexham-born wideman has the potential to play games for them this season, but appreciate his desire to feature regularly at Premier League level.

They have a strong working relationship with Bournemouth, and believe Eddie Howe to be the kind of manager that would significantly aid the player’s development, if he were to move to the South Coast.

Bournemouth have lost David Brooks, Wilson’s team-mate with the Wales national team, to injury ahead of the new season, and it is expected that Wilson would immediately challenge for a starting place on the right flank. He scored 17 goals last season as Derby reached the Championship play-off final.

Liverpool expect interest in another winger, Ryan Kent, to be firmed up before this week’s deadline, with Leeds United ready to make a bid to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis.

Klopp said after last month’s friendly with Napoli in Edinburgh that “the time is over for loans” with Kent, and sources have told Goal that Leeds, long-time admirers of the player, are likely to make a £7 million ($8.5m) offer for the former Rangers loanee once they have sold Kemar Roofe to Anderlecht.

The Reds are also likely to allow Herbie Kane, Liam Millar and Pedro Chirivella to depart on temporary deals before the window closes.

Liverpool get their 2019-20 Premier League campaign underway with a home clash against Norwich City on August 9 before a Super Cup showdown with Chelsea in Turkey on August 14.

Zalando expands its sustainable selection

Brands including Ecoalf, Mud Jeans, Swe-s, Girlfriend Collective and
Stripe + Stare will launch on Zalando in the coming weeks. The online
retailer is reacting to an increase of searches for terms like “organic” or
“fairtrade” and an increased demand for sustainable products by its
customers.

“At Zalando, we know that customers are increasingly concerned about the
future of our planet and want to make more sustainable fashion choices. Our
customers’ demand for sustainable products, which we see in the increase of
searches for “organic,” or “fairtrade,” for example, reflects the growing
interest. One of the challenges our customers face is that it can be
difficult to know what sustainability actually means, and how to find
products according to their social and environmental values. We want to
play a role in changing that,” said the German e-tailer in a statement
yesterday.

Since 2017, Zalando flags items with more sustainable materials or
certificates in the fashion store with a sustainability flag; since 2018 in
all 17 markets. Currently, Zalando’s sustainable fashion selection consists
of more than 15,000 items from over 240 brands, across all categories, and
ranges from premium brands like Mother of Pearl and Filippa K to footwear
with Veja, outdoor brands like Patagonia, denim by Nudie Jeans and Eco Fair
Fashion for women and men by Armedangels.

In the coming weeks, newly added brands will further diversify
Zalando’s selection with sustainable clothing by Spanish label Ecoalf,
denim by Dutch label Mud Jeans, activewear from Girlfriend Collective or
stockings by Swedish label Swe-s.

“Our current fashion assortment with a sustainability benefit is already
one of the largest available in Europe, but we’re just getting started. Our
ambition is to provide customers with a bigger assortment to choose from,
clearer information to choose with, and all the inspiration they need to
make more sustainable choices. Onboarding these new brands is an important
step on our journey, and we’ll focus on adding more sustainable choices to
our assortment in the upcoming months,” explained Sara Diez, vice president
womenswear at Zalando.

Within the company too, Zalando is working on making more sustainable
decisions. “We established several initiatives to improve parts of our
business, for example, making our packaging more sustainable by changing
Beauty Bags from plastic to paper. Our current sustainability strategy, our
goals and further information about all corresponding initiatives can be
found in the annual report,” said the company.

Foul or nothing! Pep's 'professional' approach to killing counterattacks is part of Man City's weaponry

The Catalan has repeatedly reject claims that his players are guilty of committing tactical fouls but the statistics do not support his defence

Toronto FC played out a 1-1 draw with Orlando City in MLS on Saturday night. Afterwards, the TFC coach Greg Vanney was questioned on whether his players could have done anything differently in order to prevent the goal they gave up.

“Foul more,” the former US international said, according to the Toronto Sun. “I think we need to use fouls as a tool to end these dangerous situations more.

“[That] doesn’t mean being nasty, doesn’t mean taking yellow cards all the time. It means slowing the game down, stopping the game, getting numbers behind the ball.”

He went on, explaining the value in snuffing out counterattacks by illegal means.

“If you take a good defending position at the start of the play and you’re between the man and the goal and the ball and the goal and you foul a player, a lot of times you probably won’t get a card,” he reasoned.

“But if you get on the wrong side of the play and then you have to foul from the back side, then you might get a card.

“If the alternative is getting a card, or letting a guy go in on a breakaway or a start a counter, then take the card, especially if you’re not on one.

“We have to be more professional. And sometimes committing a foul is being professional. That’s a resource in the game.”

The West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini had just watched helplessly as his team ran up the white flag at home against Manchester City, losing 5-0 on the opening day of the Premier League season.

“Every time we tried to arrive in their box, they committed fouls,” he claimed. “We were innocent in that regard.”

There are few doubts that West Ham would have lost the game no matter what, but it was interesting that Pellegrini alighted on so-called ‘tactical fouls’ as one of the reasons to explain why his team could not get a foothold in the game.

For Manchester City, either they possess a convenient clumsiness – the theory actually espoused by manager Pep Guardiola – or else the players are smarter than Vanney’s and actually snuff out counters before the begin.

“If you review the game, that is why we didn’t create too many chances in the first half,” Pellegrini argued.

“All our offensive moments of attacking ended in a foul. You can look at the statistics. They committed 13 fouls, we committed six. But that wasn’t the reason why we lost.”

For Pep Guardiola, a key tactic in his overall strategy is to make sure his team cannot be countered.

City routinely have six outfield players ahead of the ball during games. It means that if possession breaks down, there is a good chance that opposition teams can fill the City half before City themselves have a chance to recover and settle back in.

“David, Kevin, Gundo, make fouls. If there is a transition, make a foul.”

That line delivered by Guardiola’s assistant Mikel Arteta in the Amazon documentary series ‘All or Nothing’ gets to the heart of how City avoid counters. It’s spelt out in black and white. If there is a transition, make a foul.

Guardiola is sensitive to anyone pointing out this element in his team’s game plan, despite it being a consistent feature of his teams’ play.

Fernandinho has been the fulcrum of the City midfield and led the foul count last season with 40, alongside Raheem Sterling. And new signing Rodri has filled in well; during his first Premier League game, he committed three fouls and managed to keep the West Ham attackers from the City box.

“We try to play and, of course, sometimes there are counterattacks and [we] make a foul. Sometimes, the action is a contact,” Guardiola said last December when the issue cropped up.

“We don’t think about it. Never in my teams are we focused on to make something wrong for the opponents.

“We are a team who always tries to attack, to defend well, to try to play our game, but [I’ve never] thought you have to do that (foul) to avoid what they (the opposition) do.

“Never happened in my career and never will happen in my career.”

It’s a pretty robust denial, and one he’s been consistent with throughout his time as manager. The problem for Pep is the evidence doesn’t bear it out.

Let’s take the West Ham game for the first example. West Ham played 231 passes in the first half, during which City made eight fouls. City played 290 passes in the same time frame and West Ham made only one.

Last season in the Premier League, City made the second-lowest number of fouls behind only Liverpool. City committed 328 fouls for a 38-game average of 8.63 fouls per game. The team with the most fouls was actually Brighton, who had 463 overall.

However, no team had the ball more than City. They averaged 68.13 per cent possession throughout the total course of the season. And it’s once you start delving into fouls committed per minute out of possession that you see that City really are the masters of disrupting rhythm and quashing threats before they materialise.

Games last 90 minutes but, on average in the Premier League, the ball is in play for only 55 of those. Brighton – over the course of the season – averaged only 41.39% possession. The 59% of the time they were out of possession accounts for around 32.45 minutes, if counting the 55-minute average playing time.

That means Brighton’s average of 12.18 fouls per game accounts for around one foul every 2.5 minutes out of possession.

City, on the other hand, were out of possession for 32% of the total game time they played. Using the 55-minute average of ball-in-play, City could be said to have been out of possession around 17.6 minutes per game. Their average foul count of 8.63 means they come in ‘dirtier’ than Brighton, with one foul every two minutes spent out of possession (2.05).

So, there really isn’t any doubt that City foul a lot. Allowing for all the time they spend with the ball, when you cannot foul the opposition, their foul count is high.

Guardiola does not like it being pointed out and will, of course, continue to deny it. It’s as if there is a shame attached to it. But he’s got nothing to worry about.

Fouls are part of the game. Some are blatant, some are subtle. Some are avoidable, some are necessary. If nudging or tripping opponents means Guardiola’s teams can get on with winning matches in the style he likes, then it should be acknowledged as part of their weaponry.

After all, coaches like Vanney would kill for players as clumsy as Pep’s.

Benitez explains how 'unfulfilled promises' & broken trust led him away from Newcastle

The Spaniard walked away from St James’ Park over the summer when his contract expired, but he claims money played no part in a move to China

Rafael Benitez has lifted the lid on his acrimonious departure from Newcastle United, with the Spaniard revealing that “unfulfilled promises” and broken trust forced him out.

Having become a firm fan favourite during his time at St James’ Park, the fans were desperate to see the former Liverpool boss commit to a new contract this summer.

Instead, they saw him walk away at the end of his deal, with the Magpies board failing to reach an agreement with a coach who had worked wonders in difficult circumstances.

Benitez has since made a lucrative move to China, linking up with CSL side Dalian Yifang, but claims such a switch was only considered once bridges were burned at Newcastle and it became apparent that there was no way he could remain in charge.

Explaining a long-running saga in The Athletic, the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid coach said: “People in Newcastle have been talking about my decision to move to China without knowing what happened behind the scenes during my three years at St James’ Park.

Click Here: Maori All Blacks Store

“I haven’t wanted to say too much about that – I’ve encouraged supporters to get behind Steve Bruce and his new team – but I’ve been made aware of what Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director, claimed in the club’s match programme last weekend and I think it’s important I address that.

“Hopefully, it will be the last time I have to do so. In the future I want to write about football and nothing but football.

“When I joined Newcastle in 2016, I did it with all my heart. I could feel the history and see the potential of the club and I wanted to be part of a project and to stay close to my family on Merseyside.

“I tried to do my best every day, even staying when we went down to the Championship and saying no to other offers – bigger offers than the one I recently accepted with Dalian Yifang, by the way. If I was only interested in moving ‘for money’, as Charnley stated, I could have done it much earlier.

“Over my long career, and especially in my time at Newcastle, I’ve always shown commitment to my club, its city and its community and I’ve done it with professionalism and honesty. I want to remember the good moments I spent in the north east – and there were many of them – and not have to keep denying things about my time there or about my departure.

“Newcastle’s board had a year to sort out my contract but, when we met after the end of last season, they didn’t make me an offer I could accept. They told me they didn’t want to invest in the academy or the training ground – if they like, I can explain the reason why Mike Ashley refused to do that. Their idea of a project was a policy of signing players under 24 and, in my opinion, the budget available was not enough to compete for the top 10.

“After that meeting, I knew they would not come back with a serious offer and, when it arrived, 19 days later, it was for the same salary as three years earlier and with less control over signings. Charnley’s comments in the programme about having a deal agreed for Joelinton in February explains a lot that I couldn’t understand at that time.

“After three years of unfulfilled promises, I didn’t trust them.

“When we finished 10th in the Premier League in our first season back, all players and staff were paid a bonus – aside from my coaching team. That felt like a punishment for me not signing an extension.

“So, by the end, I knew there would not be a proper offer and they knew I was not signing.

“I couldn’t explain that in public because I was not allowed to talk to the press without their permission, so I was waiting until late June, like every fan, hoping there would be good news about Newcastle’s prospective takeover.

“The time was passing and we were losing job opportunities in Europe. I couldn’t wait forever. I’m a family man and I have a responsibility to them, my staff, Paco [Francisco de Míguel Moreno], Antonio [Gomez] and Mikel [Antia], and their families, too. I don’t like to gamble with the future of my people.

“In front of us we had three options: nothing serious from Newcastle, the hope of a possible takeover or a different project. Yes, it was a big offer in China – I have never denied that – but it was also another continent and another league, from a club giving us a lot of recognition and respect. That decision wasn’t easy, but it was clear.”
