Arsenal should build team around Guendouzi – Bent

Arsenal should look to build their team around star midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, according to ex-Tottenham striker Darren Bent.

The 20-year-old has started all four of The Gunners opening Premier League games and particularly impressed in the 2-2 draw with Spurs in the north London derby last weekend.

The Frenchman set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with a superb pass in a stand-out second half display.

Bent believes Guendouzi will be the key man in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield for years to come.

“He’s playing like he’s someone who’s played for Arsenal for years.” Bent told Football insider.

“It’s scary that he’s only 20, he could be in the Arsenal midfield for the next 10 years, he’s really good in that role.

“Even when he gives the ball away, he wants the ball all the time.

“He never shies away from that and that is a trait in a midfielder that you can’t teach, you can’t teach that.”

Guendouzi earned his first international cap for France after Paul Pogba pulled out with injury.

Guendouzi said said: “Since I was kid, it was a goal of mine. A dream.

“The fact it’s become true, you recall all the steps in your career: the hard times, the important moments.

“It’s when you’re on the phone with your family that it sinks in. There are some crying. Wearing this shirt, it’s a great honour.”

Pep keen on Inter centre-back for Man City

Manchester City were interested in signing Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar this summer.

The Premier League champions were heavily linked with Harry Maguire before his £80million move to Manchester United, and it appears they were also keen on signing centre-back Skriniar, according to Calciomercato via Sport Witness.

It is claimed that City made an approach for Skriniar in the summer but Inter boss Antonio Conte blocked his exit.

The Slovakian started all but three of Inter’s Serie A games last season and both of the opening games of this campaign.

Guardiola lost club legend Vincent Kompany at the end of the last season and Aymeric Laporte is expected to be out for some time due to an injury he picked up against Brighton.

With Guardiola and City chasing the quadruple, the English champions could return for Škriniar in January.

Marcelo Lippi on Keane, Ferguson and turning down Spurs

Legendary Italian boss Marcello Lippi has spoken out about his admiration for Roy Keane, how he nearly joined Tottenham and his relationship with Alex Ferguson.

“Yes, he [Ferguson] was almost like a brother to me,” Lippi tells the Daily Mail.

“We exchanged many gifts. I brought him the Turin gianduiotti (chocolate) for his grandchildren but he ate them in the end.

“Even the wine, the good one from my Tuscany. He loved sending me the Matrioskas, the Russian ones, with boxes in the boxes containing his 1971 Whiskey Maccallan. One day I have to call Alex and ask him for another box.

Lippi also spoke of his admiration for no-nonsense midfielder Roy Keane.

‘I loved Keane,’ he said. ‘He was very close to moving to Juventus but then failed to negotiate. I also loved (Paul) Scholes: he would have liked it anywhere and always played.

‘(Ole Gunnar) Solskjaer was very good as a player and I hope he will do very well as a coach: he deserves it.’

The Italian was once close to a move to the Premier League himself.

‘Yes, I was very close to Tottenham when I was coaching Juventus,’ he said.

‘They were very nice to me by contacting my son Davide. But I didn’t feel like leaving Turin and Juventus. For me, Juve was like Manchester United for Ferguson: a unique club that I loved to bits.

‘I didn’t speak English well and that was also a reason I declined. Someone told me that Ferguson also didn’t speak English well because he was Scottish!’

'If people took away hatred, things would work better' – Gabriel Jesus on overcoming criticism

The 22-year-old came under fire after scoring no goals in five games at the 2018 World Cup and has spoken of how he looked to move past criticism

Manchester City and Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus has admitted that he could not read most of the criticism levelled at him by fans and pundits following the 2018 World Cup.

The 22-year-old came under fire following his performances at the tournament in Russia, where he scored no goals in five games before Brazil were knocked out by Belgium in the quarter-finals.

Jesus also failed to score in the first four games of this summer’s Copa America before going on to score in both the semi-final and final as Brazil won the competition for the ninth time.

“As a supporter, I would not like a Brazil number nine to not score,” he told UOL.

“I did not have a good time at work, it happens to everyone.

“I think even if we were eliminated, if I scored in the first or in the fifth game, it would change the whole view of my World Cup.

“I confess that now I have not read much criticism that was written about me, because it was very heavy.

“There are people who praise a person who has played a good game or two, saying that he is a star.

“Others criticise a person who played one or two bad games, saying, ‘Why do you play football?'”

“Sometimes it seems they do not want to see the person evolving personally and professionally.”

Regardless of the criticism thrown his way, Jesus has an impressive record for his country with 18 goals in 36 games since making his debut in September 2016.

Previously deployed as a central striker by Brazil coach Tite, the Manchester City man saw more success when shifted out to the right wing in the latter stages of Copa America.

But with criticism an inevitable part of playing on the world stage, Jesus says he has learned to live his life without hatred.

“I try to think and see if it was an objective criticism, if I can take on the experience and evolve on top of that,” he added.

“A lot of them I did not even see, to be honest. Many, I forgot.

“I’m kind of always wanting the good of people, wanting to see them progress in their professional and personal lives.

“If people tried to take away hatred and lived happier, things would work out better. That’s why things in my life work out.”

Fred & Andreas struggles at Man Utd explained by former Red Devils flop Kleberson

A Brazilian midfielder who failed to make his mark at Old Trafford in the past can appreciate why two Selecao stars are finding the going tough

Kleberson knows all about the difficulties of making a positive impression at Manchester United, and he has been trying to explain the struggles endured by Fred and Andreas Pereira.

Back in 2003, after seeing the midfielder become a World Cup winner a year earlier, the Red Devils invested £6.5 million ($8m) in the Brazil international.

But Sir Alex Ferguson saw little return on that investment, with Kleberson making just 30 appearances across two seasons at Old Trafford.

Some 15 years on and United were back in the market for South American talent, with Fred acquired from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52.5m ($66m).

He joined fellow Brazil star Andreas in Manchester, but the 26-year-old endured a testing debut campaign in England during 2018-19.

Pereira, meanwhile, has been handed fresh terms by United but is yet to fully unlock the potential he is believed to possess.

Kleberson has told the us-bookies.com of two Samba stars trying to prove their worth: “Last season for Man United, Fred and Andreas Pereira had come in off the back of a good season.

“When you have players from different cultures and Brazil, they play more technical, more balls to feet in a fluid Brazilian style.

“When the team is not doing well, it’s tough because they may not be suited to the playing style.

“When Man United play two players in the middle, it can be difficult to not see much of the ball, and because of that Brazilian style, these players may struggle.

“If the team is doing well and other players are improving, this will give Fred and Pereira the encouragement to come out and play more and we see their improvement in England.”

Kleberson feels Fred and Andreas need to work on becoming better suited to English football, with obvious areas of their respective games that need to be worked on by United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He added: “It would be good to see them both get on the ball more and be more creative within a game.

“They need to become more athletic, and aggressive and hungry to win the ball back.

“Players and fans from South America favour the technical and attacking side of the game a lot more.”

Fred made just 13 Premier League starts for United last season, while Andreas was included from the off on only six occasions.

Napoli in sales rush to raise funds for James with Atletico poised to swoop

Los Blancos won’t accept a loan move for the Colombian, with the Italian side in a scramble to raise money for the midfielder

Napoli are attempting to sell a handful of players in order to raise funds for the permanent transfer of James Rodriguez from Real Madrid – all while Atletico Madrid are poised to swoop should a move to Serie A fall through.

The Partenopei’s sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, was in the Spanish capital recently with the hope of closing a deal for the Colombian, but his request for a loan was quickly turned down as Madrid will only consider an outright sale without the option of staggered payments.

Giuntoli’s trip was the second of such visits and essentially nothing changed after the latest meeting, with James still looking for a way out of the Santiago Bernabeu.

Sources have told Goal that Napoli are now moving fast to raise funds to match Madrid’s asking price.

Publicly, president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said that the ball is in Real’s court, insisting that the attacker is keen on a move to the Serie A club and that it is his parent club that must lower their demands.

Privately, however, club chiefs have been working behind the scenes to finalise the sales of up to three players in order to raise the required funds, perhaps aware that they do not have the upper hand in negotiations.

Roberto Inglese is the first of the trio, with the striker set to complete a permanent move to Parma in a deal that could fetch as much as €20 million (£18m/$23m).

The others include Marko Rog, who is close to a move to Eintracht Frankfurt, and Brazilian Carlos Vinicius, who is also represented by James’s agent Jorge Mendes.

In total, Napoli hope to raise around €50m (£45/$56m), more than enough to match Madrid’s €42m (£38m/$47m) asking price, and aim to have all of those deals wrapped up as early as next week before moving swiftly for James.

Other players are likely to leave Naples too, including Elseid Hysaj, Adam Ounas and Simone Verdi, but negotiations for the sales of those individuals are far from completed.

Time is very much of the essence for Napoli, as Atletico wait in the wings to pounce if the Italian side’s efforts ultimately fail.

Goal can confirm that James likes the idea of testing himself in Serie A and reuniting with Carlo Ancelotti, but that he’s also open to the idea of staying in Madrid. He already knows the Spanish capital well and has a house there, too.

Another factor to consider is that Diego Simeone has put the playmaker at the top of his wishlist, with the club confident they have the financial muscle to get a deal over the line almost immediately.

The biggest stumbling block in a move to the Wanda Metropolitano is Real themselves, however. James’s employers have already sold Marcos Llorente to their city rivals and would rather see their player move to Italy instead – even if Atleti offer more money.

And so, James’s future now lies in the hands of De Laurentiis, Inglese, Rog and Vinicius. The clock is ticking.

Will Team GB have men’s and women’s football teams at the 2020 Olympics?

With the Tokyo games only a year away, talk has already begun of Great Britain’s entry following mixed fortunes at London 2012

When the Great Britain women’s side lined up to face New Zealand in their opening match at London 2012, it was the first time a British side of any kind had taken part in the tournament in 52 years.

They won 1-0 thanks to a superb free kick from then 24-year-old Steph Houghton, while the men’s side drew 1-1 with Senegal the following day with Craig Bellamy on the scoresheet. Both teams were eventually knocked out in their respective quarter-finals.

Professionalisation, qualifying complications and a lack of agreement between the various Football Associations have generally prevented Team GB from taking part , and no agreement was reached for Rio 2016.

With Tokyo 2020 only a year away, though, Team GB’s women have confirmed their qualification – thanks to England’s exploits at the Women’s World Cup.

An agreement had been reached in October 2018 that a team would be entered if qualification was secured, but that was far from being nailed on.

To do so, England had to finish as one of the top three European sides at this year’s tournament in France.

With the hosts and big guns Germany looking strong as well as the ever-improving Dutch and resurgent Scandinavian sides in Norway and Sweden, the Lionesses faced a tough ask.

In fact, World Cup holders the USA were the only non-European side left in the draw ahead of the quarter-finals. Eventually, though, their defeat of France and England’s win over Norway meant Olympic qualification was secure.

Japan, Brazil, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Sweden’s places at the tournament are all confirmed, with six spots still to be filled.

What shape the British squad will take is as yet unclear, though it is likely to be coached by England boss Phil Neville and feature predominantly English players.

However the likes of Welsh midfielder Jess Fishlock, Northern Ireland’s Rachel Furness or Scotland’s Jen Beattie, Kim Little or Erin Cuthbert should also be in contention, while form in the 2019-20 season will clearly play a part in thinking.

With plenty of players from the other British regions plying their trade in the Women’s Super League and abroad, there is still time for them to stake a claim. Knocking Neville’s Lionesses out of his preferred squad may, however, prove tricky.

But despite somewhat nostalgic memories of Stuart Pearce’s England-Wales hybrid eleven being dumped out in vaguely embarrassing fashion on home soil by South Korea, there will be no reunion of the men’s side in Japan next year.

Daniel Sturridge’s crucial missed penalty in that shoot-out defeat could well prove to be the last kick ever made in anger by a British man at an Olympic football tournament.

An agreement between the various FAs was never reached, although they wouldn’t have qualified anyway.

The European places were given to the top four sides at the recent European Under-21 Championships, where Aidy Boothroyd’s side went out in the group stage .

The four spots instead went to Spain, Germany, France and Romania, with hosts Japan the only other confirmed entrants so far. Eleven other spots are still yet to be filled.

Running from July 22 to August 8, the tournaments will take place around Japan. As well as main host city Tokyo, matches will be held in Kashima, Saitama, Sapporo, Sendai and Yokohama.

‘Chiesa isn’t for sale at €100m’ – Spurs & Liverpool warned Fiorentina won’t repeat Baggio mistake

Rocco Commisso has informed those planning an approach for the highly-rated forward that the Viola have no intention of letting him leave

Liverpool and Tottenham have been informed that Fiorentina have no intention of parting with Federico Chiesa, with Rocco Commisso vowing that his club “won’t make the same mistake as with Roberto Baggio”.

The Viola striker, 21, has been linked with a big-money move elsewhere during the summer transfer window.

Premier League interest is said to have been shown, with Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino among those considering additions to their respective attacking ranks.

Chiesa, though, may be out of reach, with Fiorentina owner Commisso claiming that he will not be sanctioning any sales, even if a €100 million (£90m/$112m) bid is tabled.

He claims the ambitious Serie A side have learned lessons from the past, with the iconic figure of Baggio having been allowed to slip through their fingers back in 1990.

Commisso told Il Sole 24 Ore: “I will not make the same mistake with Chiesa that was made with Baggio. Roby Baggio was the greatest player ever and they sold him just for money.

“I don’t know if there are any particular clauses in Chiesa’s contract, but as far as I am concerned, he is our champion and I won’t sell him even for €100m.

“I have my dreams, we’ll take it one step at a time and see what happens, but I want to do something for Florence and Fiorentina. I want to leave my mark here.”

Commisso is determined to retain the services of Chiesa as he has big plans for Fiorentina.

The Mediacom billionaire is looking to bring the good times back to La Viola, adding: “I am 69 years old, but this morning I again woke up at 5.30am to start work.

“You never stop running here. My family left Italy as losers, we struggled to reach the end of the month and didn’t even have money to buy shoes. I worked for my older brother from age 14-17, as he opened the first pizza delivery service in the Bronx, called Pizza Time.

“I told myself, I am 69 years old, so if I don’t buy a Serie A club now, when will I do it? I don’t have much time left and I want to really leave my mark. I threw myself into this new challenge.”

'Slow' Chelsea had no solutions on Lampard's managerial bow, says Hasselbaink

The Chelsea job is just the second managerial posting of the 41-year-old’s career after he lead Derby to the Championship play-off final in May

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was critical of his old club as they made a slow, sluggish start to life under new manager Frank Lampard.

The Blues played a doleful 1-1 draw with League of Ireland side Bohemians in their first pre-season match of the summer on Wednesday, the first game at the helm for the club’s record goalscorer since he joined from Derby County.

Lampard replaced outgoing boss Maurizio Sarri after the Italian left for Serie A champions Juventus foolowing a single season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

It’s just the second managerial posting of the 41-year-old’s short coaching career after he lead the Rams to the Championship play-off final in May, a game they lost to Aston Villa to miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

And former striker Hasselbaink thinks there is much work to be done to get the Blues to a level where they are ready to challenge to win back the title they won under Antonio Conte in 2017.

“They lost the ball way too easy,” said the former Netherlands international on Chelsea’s official coverage of the match.

“Players were having too many touches, sometimes seven, eight touches and it slows the game down. It will be a lesson for Frank to see players and in a way it will make his mind up.

“Moving the ball fast is his idea of how he wants to play the game. The majority of successful teams do move the ball quickly.

“We saw today, especially in the second half, certain players were dwelling a little bit too much on the ball.

“They didn’t have a solution before they had the ball. It might be that it’s pre-season, it might be that they’re not fit yet and it will come. For some it might be a little too much.”

Lampard’s first task will be deciding which members of Sarri’s underperforming team from last term will remain in his plans as he sets about winning over Stamford Bridge as a manager.

Eden Hazard has already departed the club for Real Madrid this summer, with USA international Christian Pulisic having joined from Borussia Dortmund and Mateo Kovacic having made his loan deal from Real permanent.

“That is for Frank to figure out, who those players are and who he will go further with,” said Hasselbaink. “That’s why those games are so important.”
