‘Another Copa begins now’ – Messi sees Argentina growing after vital win over Qatar

The Albiceleste made hard work of booking their place in the quarter-finals, but they are safely through and looking to build from this point

Lionel Messi has declared that “another Copa begins now” for Argentina after seeing them scrape their way into the quarter-finals.

An opening defeat to Colombia and disappointing draw with Paraguay had left the Albiceleste sweating on progress to the knockout stage.

They were, however, to complete their Group B campaign with a welcome 2-0 victory over Qatar.

That was enough to secure second spot behind Colombia, with Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero grabbing priceless goals for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Much improvement is still required in order for Argentina to challenge for the overall prize in Brazil, but they have at least given themselves a chance.

Messi is looking to take positives from that, with the Barcelona superstar now preparing for a last-eight encounter with Venezuela on Sunday.

He told reporters after seeing off Qatar: “The important thing was to win to keep going in the Copa, to get through the group stage.

“This will be an important boost for what’s to come … another Copa begins now.

“This victory must give us strength and make us grow as a team.”

Messi admitted that there had been nerves in the Argentina camp heading into a must-win encounter, adding: “It’s tough playing this kind of game due to the necessity, the obligation [to win], the fear of missing out.

“But beyond that we played well and went through, which is what matters.”

Martinez ensured that Argentina got off to the perfect start inside four minutes.

Manchester City striker Aguero than wrapped up the win eight minutes from time, with the 31-year-old recalled after being dropped for the 1-1 draw with Paraguay.

He said: “Luckily I was picked to start and luckily at times the three of us worked well together and we won.”

While happy to have progressed out of the group, Aguero is aware that Argentina will need to raise their game against Venezuela.

Scaloni’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to the same opponents the last time they squared off in a friendly contest back in March.

“They’re quite tough opponents who counter-attack really well and we’ll try to be wise to that,” said Aguero.

Olmo responds to Man Utd rumours after starring for Spain at U21 Euros

The highly-rated winger, who is currently on the books of Dinamo Zagreb, is another of the emerging talents to have been linked with the Red Devils

Dani Olmo claims to know “absolutely nothing” about reports linking him with a move to Manchester United, with the Spain U21 star merely looking for regular game time.

The highly-rated winger is among the emerging talents to have been mooted as a possible target for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already tied up deals for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but more arrivals are expected at Old Trafford.

Olmo, who is currently on the books of Dinamo Zagreb, has seen his stock rise again this summer.

He caught the eye at the European U21 Championship, claiming the man of the match award in Spain’s 2-1 final triumph over Germany.

Olmo also recorded 12 goals and nine assists for Dinamo last season, to bring him onto the recruitment radar of leading sides across Europe.

He is, however, unaware of there being any substance to the speculation suggesting that he could soon be heading to England.

“Honestly, I know absolutely nothing about it,” Olmo told Croatian publication T-Portal.

“It’s for my manager Andy Bara and my dad.

“However, I’m not burdened by this.”

Olmo is not opposed to the idea of moving on in the current transfer window but has pointed out that he would only consider a switch to a side that could guarantee him minutes.

He added: “Very simple – [I want] a club where I will play.

“Because I am still young and for me, it is most important that I have minutes.”

Olmo’s agent, Andyja Baru, has talked up the possibility of making a move to United, as he considers the Red Devils to be short of the qualities that a former Barcelona youth star boasts.

He told Sportske Novosti: “At this point, I can’t comment on it!

“Serious talks start from today, ultimately decided by Dinamo and Olmo, of course.

“I send all interested clubs to Dinamo and when the clubs agree on a fee, I will come to agree on the conditions for Dani.

“Dani can play for any club as he has already shown this at the Euro U21s. When we are talking about Manchester United, they have no such player as Olmo.”

Messi & Icardi in, Otamendi & Di Maria out: The Argentina flops who must stay and go after Copa America failure

The PSG and Manchester City stars were deeply disappointing in Brazil and could be sacrificed as Argentina continue to renew their ranks

Argentina’s Copa America adventure may have ended with their heads held high, but once again it was shown that the Albiceleste fall short when it comes to challenging for major honours.

With a host of new faces in the squad and captain Lionel Messi in far from optimal form, the team coached by Lionel Scaloni stumbled through to the knock-out phases in Brazil.

A single win against Qatar along with a stalemate played out with Paraguay and defeat to Colombia in Group B was not exactly impressive, yet it was just enough to seal a quarter-final place.

There, they finally gave fans something to cheer, dispatching dogged Venezuela 2-0 to book a mouth-watering Superclasico in the last four.

But while hosts Brazil were given a few scares along the way, goals from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino meant that, unlike in 2015 and 2016, there would be no final appearance for Argentina.

While the third-place play-off still remains for Messi and Co., thoughts have already turned towards what will come after the Copa.

A significant part of this inexperienced side should still have a role to play when World Cup qualifying kicks off in 2020 – others, however, may have played their last match for the Albiceleste.

The No.1 shirt seems to have settled on the back of one player over the last 12 months. Franco Armani is yet to excel between the posts for Argentina, but the River Plate star has proved dependable enough and will hope to retain his place beyond the Copa.

Armani’s place is by no means secure, though. Behind him America star Agustin Marchesin and young Udinese talent Juan Musso were his deputies in Brazil, and will hope to put pressure on the shot-stopper in the short and medium-to-long term, respectively.

Musso, 25, is considered one of the best bets for the future in the Argentina ranks and is likely to add to his single cap as the nation uses the rest of 2019 to prepare for qualifying. There could also be room for Esteban Andrada of Boca Juniors, who was forced to miss the Copa through illness.

Behind that quartet the options are scarce. Geronimo Rulli has never quite managed to follow through on his early promise, while Tottenham reserve Paulo Gazzaniga has also been considered under Scaloni.

Could there be a way back for Sergio Romero ? The Manchester United man has been entirely overlooked by Scaloni but, at 32, is younger than Armani and could come back into contention if there is a change of coach post-Copa. His lack of first-team action, though, will continue to be used against him despite the keeper’s enviable track record at major competitions for his country.

IN: Andrada, Romero.

OUT: Marchesin.

Once more, Argentina’s backline proved the side’s Achilles heel when it most counted. Brazil benefited from two huge defensive mistakes to score in Belo Horizonte and much work will have to be done in that sector to restore the Albiceleste to international football’s top table.

Of the current squad, Renzo Saravia and Nicolas Otamendi fared worse than most. Saravia was erratic at right-back and ended up losing his spot to Tottenham rookie Juan Foyth , while Otamendi showed an alarming lack of speed during a calamitous campaign, while his distribution was often atrocious.

With Ramiro Funes Mori also likely to face the chop after failing to play a single minute in Brazil, Argentina are not exactly blessed with alternatives in the back four.

Gabriel Mercado could benefit from Saravia’s woes to regain his place on the right, while young centre-back pairing Emanuel Mammana and Lisandro Martinez are perhaps best-placed to enter the fray.

IN: Mercado, Mammana, Martinez.

OUT: Saravia, Otamendi, Funes Mori.

Of all the Argentina players who failed to shine at the Copa, the case of Angel Di Maria was perhaps the most telling.

Brought back from the international wilderness after a year out just before the tournament, the PSG winger was immensely frustrating and consistently among Argentina’s worst performers. At 31, and with memories of his finest displays for the Albiceleste rapidly fading, it may be time to once and for all close the door on Fideo.

The rest of the midfield was sharply divided between those who took advantage of the Copa to advance their Argentina cause, and those who fell flat.

Leandro Paredes , the side’s new midfield marshal, Rodrigo De Paul and, to a lesser extent, Giovani Lo Celso, fall in that first group and look set to remain in the Albiceleste’s plans for years to come.

The jury is still out, though, on Guido Pizarro , who received just 23 minutes in the entire Copa, while Marcos Acuna never stopped working to give the team balance and defensive cover, even if his individual contributions were limited.

On the other side, the likes of Guido Rodriguez and Roberto Pereyra failed to shine and will most likely be ditched as Argentina explore other options in the middle of the pitch.

Among those may be Manuel Lanzini , Santiago Ascacibar and young Superliga pair Exequiel Palacios and Matias Zaracho , who both fell victim to injury and were unable to make the plane to Brazil.

IN: Lanzini, Ascacibar, Palacios, Zaracho.

OUT: Di Maria, Rodriguez, Pereyra.

Barring injuries or other misfortune, Argentina’s attack should pick itself for the forseeable future.

Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero formed a promising partnership over the last three games of the Copa America, scoring three of the nation’s last four goals to take them into the semi-finals.

Behind them remains Lionel Messi , who if Tuesday’s fiery criticisms of the refereeing against Brazil are anything to go by, will not be repeating his retirement announcement of three years ago after defeat to Chile.

While that first-choice trio seems set, there should be plenty of competition behind them. Matias Suarez was the fourth striker in Brazil, a curious choice who barely featured and, we trust, will not be repeated.

Mauro Icardi should come back into contention once his interminable soap opera with the Inter board is resolved, while Angel Correa and Gio Simeone are two young faces hoping to play themselves back in contention after being overlooked for Brazil.

IN: Icardi, Correa, Simeone.

OUT: Suarez.

Despite battling through to the semi-finals, Lionel Scaloni’s future at the Argentina is far from certain once the team makes its way back from Brazil.

A complete coaching novice at senior level, the former Deportivo and Lazio defender looked way out of his depth at the start of the Copa.

And while results improved, some of his decisions betrayed his inexperience, particularly up against an old warhorse like Tite with almost 30 years of tweaking tactics under his belt. The substitutions against Brazil for one did nothing to aid Argentina’s fightback and unbalanced the Albiceleste at a crucial time.

The decision on Scaloni’s future will be made by AFA president Claudio Tapia and Argentina manager Cesar Luis Menotti shortly after he returns to Buenos Aires. Early indications suggest he may well stay in the job, for lack of other options rather than any great confidence in his work so far at the helm.

If Scaloni is removed , Gabriel Heinze , currently impressing with Velez Sarsfield, is a popular choice to succeed him; while Marcelo Gallardo is also coveted following his two Copa Libertadores titles with River, but would be tough to acquire, given his commitment to the Millonarios.

'Hazard is a great signing for Real Madrid' – Carvalho supports €100m switch from Chelsea

The former Blues and Blancos defender believes the Belgium international forward will prove to be a shrewd addition for those at the Santiago Bernabeu

Eden Hazard is “a great signing” for Real Madrid, says Ricardo Carvalho, with the Belgian expected to take his game to even greater heights on the back of a €100 million (£88m/$112m) transfer.

A protracted saga has finally delivered a switch to Spain for the 28-year-old forward.

He appears set to form part of a summer refresh at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Zinedine Zidane spending big on reshaping the Blancos squad.

Much is expected of Hazard in new surroundings, with Real still looking for someone to fill the void created by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

Carvalho believes a proven performer is ready to take on such a challenge, with seven years in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge having showcased his undoubted talent.

The former Madrid and Chelsea defender told Marca of a marquee addition for Real: “He’s a great signing.

“I know him well and I’ve no doubt that he’ll do very well.

“He’s going to have more space in Spain. He’s very fast, very strong when one on one and a team like Madrid with great players will help him.”

Real need Hazard to hit the ground running as they require inspiration from somewhere.

The 2018-19 campaign proved to be a forgettable one for the Blancos.

They were able to add another Club World Cup success to their enviable roll of honour, but there was little else for them to celebrate.

Three managerial changes were made, with Zidane eventually returned to the dugout a matter of months after walking away from a demanding post.

Struggles on and off the field have led to another sizeable spend, with Hazard set to be joined at the Bernabeu next season by Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy – with there the promise of more high-profile additions to come.

“It’s true that last year didn’t go as planned,” Carvalho said.

“But the team came from years of winning everything and sometimes that happens in football.

“You have to build a great team so it’s important they start winning matches.”

Real could only muster a third-place finish in La Liga last season, as arch-rivals Barcelona successfully defended the title, while a Champions League crown which had been theirs for three successive years has been passed on to Liverpool.

This isn’t Barcelona, Leo! Super Suarez upstaging Messi at Copa America

Just weeks after going under the knife due to a knee injury, the fiery Uruguayan has played a huge part in his nation’s march to the quarter-finals

He is the Barcelona star who, fighting while seemingly oblivious to pain and the strains of age, continues to show his nation the way forward. Through his goals and his shining example the forward is an inspiration, even if his enthusiasm may go too far at times.

As the Copa America rolls on, it is not Lionel Messi who merits the description above. It is Luis Suarez – so often over-shadowed by the Argentine in Barca colours – who has retaken centre-stage to spearhead a strong bid for Uruguay’s 16th South American crown.

Before the Copa began, the big question over Suarez’s head was whether he would be able to join his team-mates in Brazil at all. Physically worn down and mentally devastated following his club’s disastrous end to the 2018-19 season, his last game of the campaign was in Barca’s horrendous 4-0 surrender to Liverpool at the start of May.

A knee operation ended his season shortly after the last ball was kicked in anger at Anfield, and the chances of him returning in time to join his nation’s preparations looked slim.

But there’s a reason Luis Suarez is a folk hero around the streets of Montevideo, Salto and across Uruguay. Not only did he make it back in time for the Copa; he looks like he was never away from a football pitch.

Suarez netted in both of the Celeste’s opening games in Brazil, hitting the third in a 4-0 rout of Ecuador with a typically instinctive finish at the back post before slotting home from the penalty spot to level against Japan.

While he may not have found the score-sheet in Monday’s Group C decider against Chile, with both sides already safely into the quarter-finals, Suarez nevertheless kept the Roja on the back foot throughout and never stopped running as he completed 90 minutes for the third consecutive Copa game.

Indeed, if any criticism can be levelled at the famously exuberant striker it is that he perhaps needs to tone down his competitive spirit. So desperate was Suarez to make the difference that he resorted to pleading for a penalty due to a handball from Chile goalkeeper Gabriel Arias, providing the tournament with one of its most hilarious moments to date.

“He has great commitment to this country’s football”, coach Oscar Tabarez underlined after Suarez’s first game back off the bench in a warm-up friendly against Panama. “Today he looked like a player who had come off playing seven or eight games.”

So far in Brazil he has shared equal billing with his eternal strike partner. Suarez and Edinson Cavani have been tormenting defences together for the Celeste for over a decade, appearing together for the first time in February 2008 where both men hit the net.

Cavani may have one more goal so far in the Copa, three to his fellow Salto native’s two, but the partnership is one of equals. Just the kind of relationship that his captain at Camp Nou would love to have on the other side of the Rio de la Plata.

For while Messi comfortably out-performed his great friend in Blaugrana colours this term, the pair hitting 51 and 25 goals respectively, the tables have been turned in Brazil. Suarez and Cavani have thrived leading the line in a well-ordered, typically solid Uruguay side under the knowledgeable gaze of Tabarez, and go into Saturday’s quarter-final against Peru as clear favourites after finishing top and unbeaten in Group C.

The Argentina standard-bearer has been a huge disappointment in comparison. Struggling to unleash his dizzying talents in a team that was thrown together at the last minute and changes on a match-by-match basis, his only tangible contribution to the Copa so far was a penalty to claw back a 1-1 draw against Paraguay.

Messi was again ineffective even as Argentina squeezed past Qatar to make the next round. In stark contrast to their neighbours, Albiceleste hopes are decidedly modest as they prepare for Venezuela just 24 hours before Suarez and Co. take the field in Salvador.

Even in the heat of competition, the 32-year-old Uruguayan has not forgotten about his friend, who has seen old accusations that he is more involved than he should be in team selection rise up again in the wake of Argentina’s woes.

“He does not say a word,” Suarez insisted to Fox Sports.

“Not about a coach, a player, nothing. And in the Argentina team I think it’s the same, there were coaches who asked him things and he would say, ‘no, don’t ask me anything, make the decision yourself.’

“We speak about these things a lot and of course it hurts him as a human being… He takes great pride and satisfaction to want to keep showing he can continue in the national team and not give up. He will keep going until he wins something.”

That may be so, but on the evidence of this year’s Copa so far it is Suarez, not Messi, who is more likely to return to Camp Nou with a winners’ medal hanging from around his neck. A snarling, awkward, even nasty ball of nervous energy when he walks onto the pitch, that anti-hero persona cuts a sharp contrast with the withdrawn, softly spoken man who appears when the final whistle blows.

Suarez’s natural humility means that he has never had a problem with taking a supporting role behind the sparkling Argentine. His drive and fury, meanwhile, are the aspects of his character that have taken him to the top of world football – and may even ensure a second Copa win for this inveterate competitor by the time July 7’s final in the Maracana rolls around.

Germany will defend their European Under-21 crown on Sunday against Spain in Udine, having won three of their four fixtures to reach this showcase match.

Stefan Kuntz’s side have been in terrific form in front of goal for the duration of the competition, scoring at the rate of 3.5 per game. In particular, Freiburg striker Luca Waldschmidt has caught the eye, leading the competition in goals with seven – three more than anyone else.

If Spain have not had anyone to match the individual brilliance of the 23-year-old, they showed in their 4-1 victory over France in the semi-finals that collectively they are a tremendous force. Even after falling a goal behind, they rallied impressively and goals either side of half-time ensured that they won with something to spare.

Playing an attractive brand of football, executed by a team of high quality, they do not rely on a single individual. Five players have scored two goals, while many have caught the eye, including new West Ham signing Pablo Fornals and flying left-back Junior Firpo, who has committed his future to Real Betis.

Despite the manner in which they have played, they will not rest on their laurels.

“Everything can be improved,” head coach Luis de la Fuente said after the game. “There are weak points that rivals can look to exploit, but you have to work hard and improve, correct situations to become more complete.”

De la Fuente is eager to make amends for the heartbreak of 2017, when his side lost in the final to Germany.

“We were second two years ago and I had a hard time. If they beat you, it is because they are as good as you, but we are not afraid of defeat and we only think of winning.”

Germany, meanwhile, are optimistic after defeating Romania 4-2 in the last four, with late strikes from Waldschmidt and Nadiem Amiri the difference.

“We’re just playing well as a team,” the tournament’s top scorer said. “The team often makes it easy for me to score goals. I feel good. I’m happy when I’m on the pitch; I’m enjoying it. It’s great it’s working.”

Head coach Stefan Kuntz, meanwhile, commented: “We were up against a great Romania team who were on a wave. They had the spectators behind them but my team did it. We are very proud of them.

“Every match in this tournament is about learning something and I’m sure that the final will also offer us the chance to improve.”

Should Germany win on Sunday, it will be their third title, while Spain go chasing their fifth, which would equal Italy’s record.

'This is Brazil!' – Jesus fires Copa America message after breaking goal drought

The Manchester City striker is finding form in front of goal at the right time for his nation

Having previously failed to fire at the Copa America, Gabriel Jesus has broken his mini goal drought for Brazil as they saw off Argentina 2-0 in their Copa America semi-final on Tuesday.

Jesus opened the scoring in the 19th minute from close range before setting up Roberto Firmino for a routine finish in the second half.

The Manchester City striker ended a four-game run without an international goal on one of the biggest stages and in front of his home fans.

“I’m speechless. I consider every match to be important, even the ones I don’t perform well, because I take lessons from them,” Jesus said post-match.

“Tonight I was decided to score, I was very confident from the kick-off.

“I missed a chance, then I managed to score. Firmino was able to spot me well, it gave me confidence.”

Brazil will now face either Chile or Peru in the Copa America final which will be hosted at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Jesus will be desperate to get on the score sheet once again in that match and despite his recent barren run, has proven a reliable goal scorer for his nation.

His effort against Argentina was his 17th goal overall for Brazil with the former Palmeiras striker netting twice on his senior debut in 2016 against Ecuador.

Though Brazil have struggled at times on home soil at this Copa America, Jesus believes his side have turned a corner and are well poised for a strong showing in the final.

“I’m very happy not only for the goal, but for how the team performed,” he said.

“Last week I’ve said they would struggle to break our defence. We worked hard and battled hard tonight. Unfortunately we couldn’t score against Paraguay but we grabbed the goals tonight.

“Everyone should be pleased for the match they played, for the effort. This is Brazil! We have to play every match as we’ve been playing, with the same spirit, that way we will achieve our goals.”

Brazil last won the Copa America in 2007 and were knocked out in the group stages in 2016.

‘Mature Zaha ready for another big move’ – Crystal Palace legend not surprised by Arsenal talk

The Ivory Coast international flopped after making a switch to Manchester United, but Nigel Martyn feels the time is right to step up the ladder again

Wilfried Zaha is more “mature” than he was when signing for Manchester United and is ready for another big move, Crystal Palace legend Nigel Martyn has said of a man being heavily linked with Arsenal.

Back in 2013, the Red Devils invested around £10 million ($13m) in an exciting winger.

Sir Alex Ferguson made Zaha one of his last pieces of transfer business at Old Trafford before heading into retirement.

He was intended to be a parting gift for his successor, but David Moyes handed an emerging talent just four appearances in 2014-15 and he ended up moving to Cardiff on loan.

A retracing of his steps to Selhurst Park was then made, with a return to familiar surroundings required in order for Zaha to get his spark back.

The Ivory Coast international is now 26 years of age and coming off the back of a career-best campaign which saw him record 10 goals and as many assists in the Premier League.

Transfer talk is building around him once more, with Arsenal said to be leading the chase, and Martyn believes another step up the ladder could be taken.

The former Palace goalkeeper told VoucherCodes.co.uk: “I hope he will stay.

“Palace tend to have a bit of a battle every year to make sure they stay in the division.

“They have the experience now of that division, so you’ve got to hold on to your better players, but the problem is when they have good seasons, other clubs come sniffing around.

“Zaha, if he goes, it’ll be to a big club.

“He tried that when he was younger, but he’s more mature now so possibly he is ready for that move now.”

Arsenal may lack the funds to put a deal in place for Zaha, with Unai Emery said to have just £45m ($57m) to work with this summer, but the Gunners have been urged to “break the bank” for a proven performer.

Kevin Campbell has told football.london: “I would say Arsenal need to break the bank for Zaha. He’s got a proven track record in the Premier League. He can hit the ground running.

“He would be an excellent addition to Unai Emery’s squad and boost their attacking options. He would also create space for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alexandre] Lacazette to run into in dangerous areas.

“He can carry the ball in transition and is a dangerous player. He would be my preferred option. He’s strong, he’s fast. He would settle in straight away.

“He can play wide left, wide right, through the centre and he’s still young at 26 years of age.

“He would be my man for the club to target first and foremost as an attacking option. I think he would be a superb addition to the squad.

“Yes, he won’t come cheap but the fee would be paid in instalments so it wouldn’t necessarily be £60m up front.”

Arsenal complete £6m deal for Brazilian teenager Martinelli

The Gunners have snapped up the highly-rated 18-year-old forward from Ituano and tied him to a long-term contract at Emirates Stadium

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli, with the 18-year-old arriving at Emirates Stadium in a £6 million ($8m) deal.

Sources close to the transfer revealed to Goal back in April that a deal for the highly-rated forward was close.

The Gunners have now tied up an agreement for a player they are hoping to see unlock his full potential in England.

Martinelli has been acquired from Ituano, for whom he made his debut back in November 2017 at just 16 years of age.

Interest in his services built steadily from that point, with Arsenal having won the race for a hot prospect who trained with Brazil’s senior squad ahead of the 2019 Copa America.

Martinelli has signed a long-term contract at Emirates Stadium and is looking forward to testing himself in English football.

He told the club’s official website: “It is a dream since I was a child and also my family’s dream for me to be playing in Europe and playing for a big team like Arsenal. I am going to take this opportunity.”

Martinelli has arrived in north London with big ambitions, with it his intention to help Arsenal compete for major silverware.

He added: “I am a player who gives his all at all times, I play as a team and always looking to win games and win trophies.”

The youngster is certainly setting some lofty benchmarks when it comes to those he is hoping to follow in the footsteps of.

“I model my game on Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a player who works hard, pushing himself to the next level. Always in the run for titles and individual trophies,” said Martinelli.

“I look up to Cristiano Ronaldo, [Lionel] Messi and Neymar as they are players who can decide games and are very professional, who dedicate themselves to the whole game.”

Martinelli is also looking to become the latest in a long line of Brazilians to have made a positive impression during their time with the Gunners.

Quizzed on Arsenal’s Samba stars of the past, he said: “I know a few. I know Edu, Denilson and I know that they have a lot of history at the club.

“Edu, in particular, I had a little contact with him at Corinthians as I had a spell there and I know they had a lot of success here but also for the national team. I am going to try to follow the same route.”

‘Napoli are the best option for James’ – Premier League switch doubted by Real Madrid star’s father

The Colombian playmaker has been linked with a move to England, but a reunion with Carlo Ancelotti in Italy is considered to be more likely

Napoli are “the best option” for James Rodriguez, claims the Colombian’s father, with a transfer to Italy favoured over one to England if another move away from Real Madrid is made.

The South American playmaker has registered on the recruitment radar of those in the Premier League for some time, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United credited with interest.

Speculation has surfaced again this summer, with the exit door having been flung open at the Santiago Bernabeu.

James is back in Spain after a two-year loan spell at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

They will not be taking up a purchase option and the 27-year-old is expected to remain out of favour in Madrid with Zinedine Zidane back at the Blancos’ helm.

With another change of scenery likely, James’ father believes a reunion with Carlo Ancelotti in Serie A – a coach the former Porto star has previously worked with at Real and Bayern – makes the most sense.

“I think a new change is what he needs for his career now, and [fellow Colombian] David Ospina is at Napoli now and I think he is very important,” Wilson Rodriguez told CalcioNapoli.

“Napoli are the best option for him.

“He has character and personality. Even at times of adversity, he’s always come out strongly. He was born for this, thank God.

“Between him and Ancelotti, there was immediately a lot of respect. James is grateful to Carlo for what he did, he knows how to get the best out of him and that contributed to their great friendship.

“The coach has always been very happy with his performances. I’ve heard about [the speculation] and I think a change is what he needs right now.”

James, who also took in a spell with Monaco in Ligue 1 before heading to Madrid in 2014, is considered to have played the best football of his career to date under current Napoli boss Ancelotti.
