No winners out of "sad" Folau controversy: Wessels

Rebels coach Dave Wessels is expecting a galvanised Waratahs outfit at the SCG on Saturday but says there will be no winners out of the Israel Folau controversy.

Folau requested a code of conduct hearing after Rugby Australia issued him a breach notice on Monday, recommending his contract be terminated.

Wessels said he expected NSW to come out firing in the wake of the drama.

“I think temporarily it might be a galvanising thing for the Waratahs,” he sad.

“I think if I were the coach I’d be trying to think of a way to do that but the reality is they’ve lost an absolutely world-class player there, not just for one or two games, it’s forever and I think that’s sad.”

Wessels said in the long-term not party would be able to count themselves as winners, regardless of the outcome.

“I think for the Waratahs, for me I just feel sad in the situation that’s happened with Israel,” he said.

“I don’t know him personally so I can’t comment on the personal side of things but what I do know is he’s the number one try scorer in the history of Super Rugby, he’s probably one of the best entertainers in the game in the world.

“He’s a hell of a player and for him to be lost to Australian rugby is sad and I just don’t think there’s any winners out of it. I don’t think Israel’s won out of it, I certainly don’t think rugby’s won out of it.”

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said he was not surprised by Folau’s decision to request a hearing and that he was competely entitled to do so.

“That’s his right,” he said.

“I certainly support any player that takes up that right and the code of conduct is what it is.”

Gibson was reluctant to entertain the possibility of Folau returning to the Waratahs fold down the track, if he is successful in that hearing.

“It does get tricky,” he said.

“We’re dealing in hypotheticals here. He may, he may not. I’d rather just focus on the team that I’ve got in front of me.”

Ahead of Respect for the Aged Day, number of centenarians in Japan tops 70,000

The number of people aged 100 or older in Japan has exceeded 70,000 for the first time after marking an increase for the 49th consecutive year in the aging society whose birth rate remains low, government data showed Friday.

Women centenarians vastly outnumber the men, accounting for 88.1 percent of the total 71,238. The figure represents a roughly 23-fold increase from a centenarian population of 3,078 in 1989, according to the data released by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry ahead of Monday’s national holiday in Japan for Respect for the Aged Day.

The number of females who will have reached 100 years of age by Sunday totals 62,775, up 1,321 from last year. The number of such men is 8,463, an increase of 132.

Kane Tanaka, a 116-year-old resident of the city of Fukuoka, is the oldest Japanese. Born in January 1903, she is acknowledged as the world’s oldest living person by Guinness World Records.

On Wednesday, when Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima visited Tanaka at a nursing home and presented her flowers and a big cake, Tanaka said: “I don’t think I’m going to die soon. I’ve never thought about it.”

Chitetsu Watanabe, a 112-year-old resident of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, is the oldest Japanese man.

By prefecture, Tokyo has 6,059 centenarians, followed by Kanagawa at 3,933 and Osaka at 3,648.

Japan’s average life expectancy was 87.32 for women and 81.25 for men in 2018.

The number of people aged 100 or over in the country stood at only 153 in 1963, when the government began compiling the statistics. The total exceeded 1,000 in 1981, 10,000 in 1998 and 50,000 in 2012.

There will be 56.34 centenarians per 100,000 people nationwide as of Sunday, the ministry said. By prefecture, Kochi came top with 101.42 centenarians per 100,000 people, followed by Kagoshima with 100.87 and Shimane with 99.85. By contrast, Saitama was at the bottom of the list for 30 years in a row, at 33.74. Aichi was second from the bottom, at 37.15, and Chiba third, at 39.68.

The number of people who will turn 100 by the end of the current fiscal year through next March will be 37,005, according to the ministry.

The government had in the past gifted centenarians with silver cups in the prime minister’s name, but since 2016 began distributing silver-plated cups instead to reduce costs.

Man United star makes frustrated point over OGS selection

Nemanja Matic is excited to see young talent getting a chance at Manchester United – but the midfielder hopes there is also room for experience as he looks for more game time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men ended a three-match winless run by overcoming previously unbeaten Leicester at Old Trafford, where Marcus Rashford’s early spot-kick was the difference in a 1-0 triumph.

The match-winning forward was joined by fellow 21-year-olds Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the line-up on Saturday, when Andreas Pereira, 23, and Scott McTominay, 22, also started.

Tahith Chong, just 19, came off the bench for a United side which has an accent on youth under Solskjaer – something Matic, one of the few older heads, likes to see.

“I don’t believe in age – good players or bad players,” the midfielder, one of three starters in their 30s, said.

“It doesn’t matter if you are 18 or 35, so I think who played today deserved to play.

“The most important thing was the team took three points and what we did today is great, and I am happy for the young players.

“They get the opportunity to play. It’s not always normal in big clubs that you get that opportunity so young and Manchester United is giving opportunity to the guys who grew up here in the academy and that’s good.

“They have to use that because in big clubs they don’t give always opportunities to the young guys because of the pressure, the results. Everyone wants to win.

“They buy ready players to win so it’s good for them.

“I think in this season the people from the club they can see who is ready to play already in a high level.

“It doesn’t matter if they are 18 or 25 or 35, we can see if they are ready or not and then for the future to decide what to do.

“As I said, I am happy for them. I like to see young players on the pitch and hopefully they can bring us some fresh energy for the rest of the season.

“Of course (it has been frustrating). I want to play, I always give my best for the team.

“The coach is the man who picks the team and when you are on the bench you are not happy, but I am trying to convince him to change his mind and pick me to play.

“The season is long. Today as you saw I played, and we won the game.

“I am happy so we will see in the future what the coach will decide.

“I am ready. In the last 10 years I have played in a high level and every game I try to do my best to help the team because I think I am a team player and I can help a lot I think.”

Bournemouth win over Everton to be ‘launchpad’ for season – Howe

Eddie Howe hopes Bournemouth’s first home win of the season can be “a launchpad for better things”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Howe said: “It was hard work. It was a really hot day and our boys performed superbly. It is huge psychologically because our home form is so important.

“We knew it was a huge moment in our season and hopefully we can use it as a launchpad for better things.

On Callum Wilson, Howe said: “Strikers need to score goals to feel confident. Callum has never had a problem in that respect and the second goal in particular was an outstanding finish.”

Ryan Fraser was left on the bench until the second half, but Howe was impressed with his impact when he came on.

He said: “I expected Ryan to make a real impact and it was a stage of the game where we felt we needed a lift.

“The goal was typical and his set play delivery is excellent. He was the catalyst for our improvement in the second half.”

Bournemouth have now moved above Everton into eighth in the Premier League.

Guardiola: ‘Congratulations Liverpool, you are the champions’

Pep Guardiola has congratulated Liverpool on winning the Premier League title.

Liverpool claimed City’s crown by beating Newcastle 3-1 on Saturday, with reigning champions Manchester City falling to Norwich.

It is the first time the Reds have won England’s top flight since 1990, while City have failed to become only the fifth side to win it three times in a row.

Guardiola was quick to praise Jurgen Klopp’s side after the surprise defeat to Norwich.

“We are in September, okay?” he said. “Congratulations Liverpool, you are the champions.

“We’re in September, what do you have to do? We’ll recover, train and come back.

“We’ve dropped five points. Tottenham, we played incredible well. Today, in the important parts we have to know exactly what to do.”

Neymar has ‘no problem’ with boos from disgruntled PSG fans

Neymar says he understands why he was booed by his own supporters – even after scoring a spectacular winner on his Paris St Germain return.

The Brazilian returned to the PSG side for the first time this season after his very public desire to move back to Barcelona over the summer eventually came to nothing.

Thomas Tuchel put Neymar straight back in the starting line-up after he scored for Brazil last week and he was booed by a noisy section of PSG fans throughout.

Jeers could even be heard after the world’s most expensive footballer prevented what had looked like being a goalless draw with Strasbourg by scoring an overhead kick in injury time.

Neymar said in quotes reported by L’Equipe: “We all know what happened (in the summer). I understand that it is very difficult for them (the fans).

“But from now on, I am a PSG player. If they want to whistle me, there is no problem. There are more than 25 players in the squad, you cannot focus on one.

“The other players do not deserve to be subjected to this. We have a team and we have to support the club, support Paris. When the crowd is behind the team, together we are stronger.”

Asked if he had a message for the fans, he said: “No, nothing. I just want to thank my team-mates for allowing me to score this goal.”

Website of Japan’s new 78-year-old IT minister offline for months, raising questions over his tech acumen

The official website of new Japanese information technology minister Naokazu Takemoto has been unviewable for the past few months, raising concerns among social media users over his ability to handle the portfolio, it was learned Friday.

“The website has been locked by the company managing its domain, and reconstruction work is underway,” wrote Takemoto, 78, in a Twitter post. He was appointed to his first ministerial post in a Cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.

According to Takemoto’s management office, the website includes reports about his activities and links to social media pages.

The office said it has paid for domain renewals, and the cause for the shutdown was not clear.

“We have made inquiries to the management company including on whether the same domain can be used,” an official at the office said.

“I’m asking (the management company) to recover (the website) soon. I don’t know why it has been locked,” Takemoto told a news conference Friday.

In a news conference a day earlier, Takemoto said online administrative procedures and the country’s practice of using hanko (personal seals) should coexist.

The Diet in May enacted legislation that simplified procedures related to events such as changes of address, death certificates and property inheritance through online administrative procedures, rather than forcing citizens to go to government offices, fill out forms and stamp paperwork using hanko.

Takemoto, who heads a group of lawmakers working to protect the nation’s hanko culture, said: “The two should not be regarded as conflicting things. We have to think about how to let them flourish together.”

Shrinking Yamanashi village converts 150-year-old home into hotel in hope of reversing decline

KOFU, YAMANASHI PREF. – A new hotel in a traditional wooden house has been opened in a small village in Yamanashi Prefecture in the hope of revitalizing an area that it is grappling with a declining population.

The village of Kosuge, where the population has fallen by 40 percent to around 700 over the past three decades, is aiming to transform itself by further remodeling vacant dwellings to provide accommodation for tourists.

The new hotel, Nipponia Kosuge Genryu no Mura (Kosuge: Village of the Headstream), which opened in August, has four rooms that are decked out with Nordic furniture and lighting while maintaining the warmth of the wooden structure, constructed out of zelkova and pine trees.

In the 788-square-meter residence dating back 150 years, originally the home of a wealthy family engaged in silk farming, a longhouse with a gate has been renovated into a restaurant offering a seasonal menu that uses local ingredients and is changed about every two weeks.

“It’s the first time we’ve stayed in a hotel that used to be a traditional Japanese house,” said Izumi Kidooshi, 57, who came from Tokyo with her husband. “It was clean and comfortable, which I had been worried about.”

Another guest, Kayoko Nakanishi, 52, who stayed with her family, said, “It isn’t a famous tourist spot, but we were able to enjoy the area’s atmosphere.”

The village, located by the headwaters of the Tama River, which flows into Tokyo, has seen local lodging businesses close and an increasing number of vacant houses as its population declines.

The new project to make the whole village into a hotel community with hot springs and shopping areas is expected to attract tourists and create jobs while protecting the environment and eliminating the problem of vacant houses, according to the operator of the Nipponia hotel.

“We would like visitors to not only enjoy their time in the lodges, but also the entire area,” said Shumpei Shimada, president of the operator, Edge.

The idea of opening a series of lodging facilities in the village was made possible after the revised Hotel Business Law came into force in June last year, scrapping a minimum requirement regarding the number of guest rooms.

A one-night stay at the Nipponia hotel with breakfast and dinner starts from ¥25,000 ($235) per person, according to the operator.

Japan’s Supreme Court orders review of Nagasaki dike floodgate case

The Supreme Court on Friday scrapped a lower court ruling involving the floodgates of a dike at Isahaya Bay, sending a protracted legal battle over a state-run land reclamation project in Nagasaki Prefecture back to the Fukuoka High Court.

The high court will conduct further hearings between the central government and local fishermen in the contentious court battle over whether to open the gates of the dike in Nagasaki Prefecture.

In July last year, the Fukuoka court ruled the gates should remain closed in a decision that effectively overturned a 2010 ruling ordering the state to open them.

The state had filed a suit with the Fukuoka court in 2014, demanding that the 2010 ruling be nullified.

The floodgates of the 7-km-long dike, enclosing part of the Ariake Sea, have been shut since 1997 for a land reclamation project requested by Nagasaki Prefecture.

That created 670 hectares of farmland and a reservoir for use in farming at a cost of ¥253 billion ($2.3 billion).

The gates have been a major topic of debate between local fishermen, who claim the closure has damaged their livelihoods, and farmers, who are concerned that opening them will damage the farmland.

Isahaya Bay is part of the Ariake Sea, a nearly landlocked body of water encircled by Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Saga and Fukuoka prefectures in Kyushu.

The state has said the reclamation will also help protect local communities from flood damage.

OGS says ‘average age might go up’ amid Man Utd injury crisis

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed the severity of Manchester United’s current injury crisis.

Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw will be unavailable against Leicester in a game United cannot really afford to lose.

Solskjaer says that is likely to necessitate first-team returns for Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Ashley Young, who have been pushed out for a more youthful side.

“The treatment room’s been busy and still is,” he said. “So we don’t really know who’s gonna be available. There’s maybe Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], maybe Jesse [Lingard] and I think maybe that’s it from the ones that pulled out but I can’t promise those two will be available either.

“Leicester is always a tough game, as a team, a club wanting to push into the top four, they’ve got good players, a good manager, a proven top manager. Brendan’s teams always play with football and we’ve got to play well to get the three points.

“Pogba won’t be fit, no. Unless he’s had a miraculous recovery overnight from yesterday to today or tonight to tomorrow, he’s not been ready to do 100% training, no.

On Martial, he added: “We hope more can be ready for West Ham next week and Paul and Anthony are in that category, I think they’ll be ready for then and can’t say more than that really.

“You’ve got players who can come in with loads of experience.

“Juan (Mata), Nemanja (Matic) and Ash (Young), who didn’t start the first game and have got to step up and the average age might go up.”
