Carragher: Torres was ‘done’ when Chelsea paid £50m

Jamie Carragher says Fernando Torres’ ‘time was done’ before Chelsea paid Liverpool £50million for the striker.

Torres moved to Stamford Bridge in January 2011 after making clear his desire to leave Anfield following a hugely successful career with Liverpool.

But the Spain striker never recaptured the form that made him one of the world’s most feared centre-forwards, with Chelsea getting only 20 Premier League goals in three and a half seasons from their record signing.

Carragher reckons a torrid debut against his former club set the tone for his Chelsea career.

He told Sky Sports: “We didn’t want to stop Torres signing for Chelsea. His time was done – £50m was more than enough.

“We couldn’t believe it. I was shocked by the money they paid. I knew he’d wanted to go from the summer, he hadn’t had a great 18 months, he went in the January, but his one good game that season was against Chelsea at Anfield when we beat them 2-0 and he scored both.

“We knew he wasn’t the Torres when he’d first arrived.

“I thought it was a mistake by Carlo Ancelotti to play him in that game. He’d just signed, it’s against Liverpool. It’s a big game, I didn’t feel sorry for him but to go in against your old club, getting a lot of stick, I think it affected him for his whole time at Chelsea.”

Liverpool travel to Chelsea again this weekend looking to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Man Utd 1-0 Astana: Mason off the mark

Mason Greenwood opened his Manchester United account in style as the 17-year-old secured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men an unconvincing win against Astana in their Europa League opener.

Back in the competition for the first time since lifting the trophy two years ago, the Reds’ gruelling road to Gdansk got off to a surprisingly uncomfortable start against the perennial Kazakhstan champions.

An embarrassing European result was looming large in front of an increasingly frustrated Old Trafford crowd, only for teenager Greenwood to produce a moment of magic and secure a 1-0 win.

Solskjaer will be relieved to have got Group L off to a winning start, although will surely be alarmed by the way his side’s performance dropped off after Fred hit the woodwork and Marcus Rashford saw early efforts denied.

Perhaps the disjointed display should not come as a surprise given teenagers Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Greenwood were all handed starting roles as United named their youngest European line-up since 2012.

The latter would eventually save the day – and show just why Solskjaer called him one of the best finishers he had seen – by confidently making space and smashing home in front of the Stretford End, becoming the first player born this millennium to score for United.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-3 Arsenal: Willock and Saka shine

Arsenal academy graduates Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka shone as the Gunners began their Europa League campaign with an impressive victory at 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.

In what should prove to be their most difficult assignment in their attempts to qualify from Group F, head coach Unai Emery made seven alterations from the weekend’s disappointing draw at Watford and saw his team run out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Willock and Saka, as well as Emile Smile Rowe, were the youngsters given a chance to impress and the former opened the scoring in the first half.

Saka would then double the advantage with a fine finish before laying on a late third for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with both second-half goals coming after Frankfurt midfielder Dominik Kohr had been sent off.

There was trepidation from Arsenal supporters before kick-off as David Luiz, who has conceded two penalties in five games for he club, was partnered in defence by Shkodran Mustafi – the Germany international having been told by Emery he was free to leave this summer.

But the pair, along with makeshift right-back Callum Chambers, Sead Kolasinac and back-up goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, held firm as Emery looks to go one further than last season’s Europa League final defeat to Chelsea.

That was also partly down to the profligacy of a new-look Frankfurt front-line after the club, who reached last year’s semi-final only to lose on penalties to the eventual winners, sold attacking trio Luka Jovic, Ante Rebic and Sebastien Haller over the summer.

Djibril Sow arrowed a shot straight at Martinez, making his first Arsenal appearance since December, as the hosts started positively.

They should have been behind soon after, though, as 18-year-old winger Saka crossed in for the onrushing Lucas Torreira, who sent his effort well over the bar from all of eight yards out.

Aubameyang angled a shot away from Kevin Trapp’s goal before Martinez was forced into a smart, low save to deny Filip Kostic from a similar position to his earlier chance.

Willock was next to pass up a decent chance to open the scoring, striking a shot wide after some fine solo work from Aubameyang allowed the Gabon striker to cross for the midfielder.

Granit Xhaka did well to press high up the pitch and wrestle possession from Sow then play a slide-rule pass into Smith Rowe’s run – Trapp making the save with his foot to deny the Arsenal youngster.

After wasting their opportunities, Emery’s side eventually broke the deadlock seven minutes before half-time as Saka freed Willock and he twisted inside before seeing his shot take a wicked deflection off David Abraham, loop up over Trapp and bounce in off the crossbar.

Martinez ensured Arsenal would go in at the break in front as he made another decent stop to keep out Andre Silva on the stroke of half-time.

Bas Dost, signed from Sporting Lisbon to at least replace some of the goals lost with the summer sales, headed tamely wide early after the restart.

Silva – also a new attacking recruit – then missed the target as the task of filling the collective 56-goal void left by the departures of Jovic, Haller and Rebic was clear for all to see.

In keeping with the opening 45 minutes, Arsenal would almost immediately create a chance of their own, Martin Hinteregger sliding in to block Aubameyang’s strike after he was found by Willock.

Xhaka then came within inches of scoring a fortuitous second as his intended cross from a free-kick wrong-footed Trapp and hit the crossbar.

Trapp made further saves to deny Willock and Saka, before the latter was clipped by Kohr, who was shown a second yellow card by referee Davide Massa with 11 minutes remaining.

Aubameyang then missed an absolute sitter to wrap up the win but would make amends by slotting home the third after Saka’s fine bending strike had already secured the points.

Djenepo ruled out of Friday’s south coast clash

Southampton forward Moussa Djenepo will not be fit to face Bournemouth on Friday night and Nathan Redmond faces a late fitness test, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed.

Mali international Djenepo, a summer signing from Standard Liege, scored to give the Saints a 1-0 win at Sheffield United last weekend.

Hasenhuttl, though, revealed the forward had again been troubled by a previous muscle problem so would not be risked in the Premier League game. Redmond, though, is close to a return from his ankle injury.

“Nathan could train this week with the team. This is a good message how far he is. If he really can play tomorrow I haven’t decided so far. But it’s good he is back because Moussa is out. He cannot play,” Hasenhuttl said at a press conference.

“After a few sessions this week he felt a little bit more his muscles. We don’t want to take this risk, so we leave him out tomorrow.

“It is the same muscle. At the beginning of the week he was okay and yesterday felt it a little bit more so we gave him a little break.”

'He was always yelling and screaming!' – Golovin reveals all on Henry's failed Monaco tenure

The Arsenal icon lasted just 104 days in his first full-time managerial role before being sacked by the Ligue 1 outfit

Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin says former manager Thierry Henry did not ‘fully transition’ into the role of a manager during his unsuccessful spell with the Ligue 1 side.

Henry was appointed to succeed Leonardo Jardim as manager last October, only to be replaced by the same manager again in January.

He managed just two league victories with the Ligue 1 outfit before being moved on and is said to have fallen out with a number of Monaco’s players.

Golovin, who played under Henry having signed for the principality club after the 2018 World Cup, says Henry was nervous as a manager and would yell at the players a lot.

“Maybe Henry didn’t kill the role of the player inside of him,” the 22-year-old said.

“When things weren’t working out during practice he would get nervous and yell a lot. Maybe it was unnecessary.

“He was a very strong player and the only players near his level at Monaco are maybe [Radamel] Falcao and [Cesc] Fabregas.

“He would try to go out onto the field and show us how to practice and yell.”

The Russia midfielder also explained how Henry would join in with training and says some players were shocked by his management techniques.

“Maybe a different manager would say ‘let’s go, get it together’, but he would get nervous right away and run onto the field and start playing and showing us things.

“He would scream ‘try to get the ball away from me’. Players were mostly calm, but maybe they were in a bit of a shock.

“You could tell he didn’t fully transition into the role of manager.

“There were times when he would feel hurt and not talk to us and review tactics for hours.”

Despite admiring Henry’s desire to use some of the younger players at the club, Golovin says he feels that the Frenchman struggled to adjust to the role of a manager, having only been a coach in the past.

“After Jardim came back, positivity during training came back.

“It’s much harder being the main coach rather than the fun assistant manager when you realise everything is on your shoulders.

“He wanted to advance the youth at the club and brought up 6 players to train with the main team. He trusted young players and I liked that.”

'I didn't know that?' – ex-Chelsea star Malouda finds out he's been sacked by FC Zurich… on Twitter!

The Swiss side reported the former France winger’s departure as a “mutual agreement” but it seems he knew nothing about it

Former Chelsea and France star Florent Malouda must have got quite the shock when he logged on to Twitter on Thursday to find out that he no longer had a job.

The 38-year-old joined Swiss side FC Zurich as part of the coaching staff in February, taking charge of training attackers and youngsters in the first-team.

But less than two months into the job, the capital club have decided to remove the former France international winger from his duties with the club.

“FC Zurich and Florent Malouda have decided by mutual agreement to end the recently started cooperation,” a statement on the club’s website read.

“It turns out that the various projects in which Florent Malouda remains involved are not compatible with the tasks planned by the FCZ.

“We wish Florent Malouda good luck and success on his future career path.”

Although Zurich reported the termination as mutual, it seems no one passed the message on to Malouda himself as he tweeted a reply to the club to express his surprise.

After Zurich tweeted the announcement that the Premier League and Champions League winner had departed, Malouda replied, saying: “Really, I didn’t know that.”

As a player, Malouda won four Ligue 1 titles with Lyon before leaving for Chelsea. The winger spent six years at Stamford Bridge, winning a Premier League title, three FA Cups, a Community Shield and the Champions League in 2012.

He would then move to Trabzonspor in Turkey and back to France for a season with Metz before heading to Indian side Delhi Dynamos.

A World Cup runner-up with France in 2006, Malouda brought an end to his career last July after spending six months in Luxembourg with Dudelange.

His former club Chelsea are in Europa League action on Thursday as they face Slavia Prague in the quarter-final of the competition.

The Blues are also still in contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League, with their Eden Hazard-inspired 2-0 win over West Ham moving them up into third place.

'Amazing' Ramsey can end Arsenal career in style, says Emery

The midfielder will join Juventus at the end of the season and his current coach wants him to leave the UK on the back of a successful campaign

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has challenged Aaron Ramsey to end his career with the club on a high.

The Gunners are in the thick of a four-way battle for two Champions League qualification spots in the Premier League and have one foot in the Europa League semi-finals after earning a 2-0 quarter-final first leg win over Napoli on Thursday.

Ramsey – who will leave the Emirates Stadium for Italian champions Juventus at the end of the season – scored the opener against Napoli and Emery wants him to continue his fine recent form in the closing weeks of the season.

“It’s not easy for him after he signed for Juventus but his focus is to help us and his attitude is a very amazing attitude towards each training session,” he told a media conference ahead of his side’s visit to Watford on Monday.

“I continued speaking with him about doing something very important in the last matches here in two competitions that are very important for us.

“He wants to do something important for the supporters and I want to do something important for him in his last matches here.”

Sixth-place Arsenal will climb back into the top four if they overcome the Hornets and Chelsea fail to pick up any points against Liverpool on Sunday, and Emery knows his side will have to be at their best against the FA Cup finalists.

“We are showing we are competitive and have a good mentality,” he added.

“At Watford, we need to be defensively hard and strong, like we are at home now, and in the attacking moments use the best opportunities to find chances to score.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain edges closer to Liverpool return after behind-closed-doors friendly outing

The England international midfielder played for an hour as the Reds’ under-23 side took on Bury on Tuesday

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has taken a big step closer to a return to competitive action for Liverpool, coming through an hour in a behind-closed-doors friendly this week.

The England international started as a Reds XI, made up mainly of players from Neil Critchley’s under-23 squad, took on Bury at the club’s Academy in Kirkby on Tuesday afternoon.

Oxlade-Chamberlain came through unscathed, on what was his first outing since feeling his hamstring in an under-23s game against Derby last month.

The 25-year-old has been sidelined for the past 12 months since rupturing knee ligaments in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final with Roma, but Jurgen Klopp was hopeful of having him back in contention before the end of this season, as the Reds bid for domestic and European glory.

Klopp admitted recently that he had made a mistake in getting “too excited” about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return to training in February, and suggested he would take a more cautious approach with the former Arsenal man following his muscle scare at Derby.

But the sight of Oxlade-Chamberlain picking up significant minutes will be a boost to the German, no doubt.

Rhian Brewster also featured in the game, his second appearance since returning from a serious knee injury of his own. The 19-year-old striker suffered a knock to the hip when featuring in a friendly with American college side Northwestern University last month, but has been able to resume full training and, like Oxlade-Chamberlain, came through around an hour against Bury.

Joe Gomez had initially been slated to play in the game, but was given a late promotion to the senior squad due to an injury to Alberto Moreno.

The England defender has not played since fracturing his leg against Burnley in December.

Klopp realising a dream of having 'world class' team at Liverpool

The German coach has overseen a great improvement since becoming Reds manager and he is relishing challenging for major titles

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp feels he is realising a long-held dream of being in charge of a “world class” team that challenges for titles.

The Reds have developed into one of Europe’s best teams since Klopp took charge in 2015, with the German helping them produce entertaining, attack-minded football.

Last season they were runners-up in the Champions League, but only just managed to secure a top-four finish domestically.

However, this term they have transferred their European form to the Premier League are in a real tussle with Manchester City for the title, while also set to face Porto in the Champions League quarter-finals.

A semi-final against either bitter rivals Manchester United or Barcelona awaits if they defeat Porto over two legs, and Klopp agrees with the idea that the Reds are now a team Europe’s best would hope to avoid.

“That’s true,” he told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s first-leg clash at home to Porto. “It’s a combination of things. In good games – we don’t talk about average games – we defend really well and we can really play football.

“When I was a young manager I was always dreaming of having a team of world-class players with the attitude of a proper challenger.

“That is actually what I love and we showed that, especially in the Champions League, very often. We love the competition, that’s how it is.

“We want to go there and it’s now clear that we have qualified again for the Champions League next year. That was a real moment. Cool.

“It didn’t happen too often [qualifying for the Champions League in recent years], especially not to the boys, and now having these games with this special attitude the team can create, in this special stadium with a crowd that create an atmosphere, it is really a place you want to be part of.

“The best way is as a supporter watching the game, but you wouldn’t want to be the opponent. That is exactly how it should be. This [Anfield] is one of the toughest places to go at the moment and I hope we can show that again.”

Liverpool head into the match fresh from a 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Friday.

The result saw Klopp’s men return to the top of the table by two points ahead of Manchester City, albeit having played a game more than their title rivals.

Arsenal investigate alleged Koulibaly racist abuse during Europa League tie

The Gunners say any fan using racist language is “not welcome” and that they will be banned from matches

Arsenal have launched an investigation after a video appeared on social media appearing to show a fan aiming racist abuse at Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final.

The incident took place during the first half of the 2-0 win in north London after Koulibaly had cleared a corner that had been swung in by Lucas Torreira.

Arsenal are now working to identify the supporter shown in the 15-second clip and say that anyone caught using racist language will be banned from games and that they are not welcome at the club.

A statement released by the Gunners said: “We utterly condemn the use of any racist language and have launched an investigation to identify the culprit.

“We operate a zero tolerance approach and anyone behaving like this is not welcome at Arsenal and will be banned from matches.

“We have an extremely diverse community of fans who are all part of the Arsenal family and such incidents are rare at Emirates Stadium. We encourage supporters to report any incidents as they happen to stewards or via our matchday alert service.”

The incident came on the same night that a video emerged appearing to show some Chelsea fans calling Liverpool star Mohamed Salah “a bomber” ahead of their Europa League quarter-final at Slavia Prague.

Chelsea say they will also look to ban their supporters if they can identify them and establish for certain that it happened in Prague ahead of the match, as suspected.

A statement read: “Chelsea FC finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour abhorrent and where there is clear evidence of Chelsea season ticket holders or members involved in such behaviour, we will take the strongest possible action against them.

“Such individuals are an embarrassment to the vast majority of Chelsea supporters who won’t tolerate them in their club.”

Liverpool released a statement of their own in relation to the incident.

“This behaviour needs to be called out for what it is – unadulterated bigotry,” the statement read.

“As pertains to this latest incident, the club is working with Merseyside Police to ascertain the facts around this footage with the aim of identifying individuals featuring in it.

“In addition, we are working directly with Chelsea Football Club on the matter. We thank them for their condemnation and a commitment to act urgently to identify any individuals responsible.”
