'I need to play'- Martinez reveals Arsenal exit is possible as goalkeeper grows tired of life on loan

The Argentine goalkeeper has three years left on his contract and has been impressing while on loan with Championship side Reading

As he sits pondering his future at the Reading training ground, a promise he made to his father as a 16-year-old is at the forefront of the mind of Emiliano Martinez.

It was in 2010 and Martinez was back in Argentina preparing to make the move to Arsenal from Independiente.

As he was about to say goodbye to his family home in Mar del Plata – a city on Argentina’s Atlantic coast – he vowed that he would make it in England.

And now, nearly 10 years on, that promise is starting to weigh more and more on the shoulders of the 26-year-old goalkeeper as he approaches what will be the biggest summer of his career.

Martinez is at a crossroads. He remains determined to make it Arsenal, the club he loves, but he knows that he can’t stay in north London without the guarantee of playing first-team football.

The imposing goalkeeper is currently three months into what has been a highly successful loan spell with Reading in the Championship.

He arrived with the Berkshire club sitting in the relegation zone, but now they they sit four points above the bottom three and looking likely to secure their status in the second tier of English football.

And the part Martinez has played in their survival can’t be underestimated. The Arsenal loanee has kept three clean sheets in 11 games and has made several vital stops to earn Reading valuable points in their battle against the drop.

He has already won two man of the match awards and is constantly being bombarded on social media by messages from fans begging him to turn his loan move into a permanent one.

Whether that happens, depends as much on Arsenal as it does on Martinez.

He is clear in his thinking. His desire is to return to Arsenal and stake his claim for the No.1 spot, currently filled by Bernd Leno.

But should the offer of regular first-team football not be forthcoming, Martinez is adamant that he will have to call time on his stay at the Emirates.

“I’ve been around a lot, but for me it’s now time to settle in one place,” he exclusively told Goal . “I’m at an age now where I have a newborn baby and me and my wife want to settle. I’m tired of going on loan.

“Obviously I love Arsenal. But it’s time for me to make it there or go somewhere else.”

Martinez added: “I promised my dad I was going to make it and I will make it.

“My dream is to play for Arsenal, I’ve always said that and I believe I have everything that a keeper needs to play for Arsenal.

“When I signed my last contract for six years it was because I believed I had everything to be No.1. Why would I sign for six years if I wasn’t going to have any games?

“If they don’t trust me, then I will have to move away and the Arsenal fans will understand. But I believe I should have the chance to show how good I am at Arsenal.

“I want to stay in England. My wife and my kid were born here and I want to stay at Arsenal – that’s the truth, so I hope they give me the chance.”

Martinez first arrived at Arsenal in 2010 having been spotted while playing in the youth teams at Independiente.

A scout for the north London club had followed his progress closely and then a stand-out performance during the South American Under-17s championships was enough for Arsenal to firm up their interest.

At just 16, the prospect of a move to England was a daunting one, but Martinez was already used to making his own way in the world.

“From the age of 12 I was living on my own because I moved to Buenos Aires to play football,” he said. “I had been living five hours away in Mar del Plata so I was used to living away from my family.

“Obviously it was still a massive change moving to London, but my dad was struggling for money and my family wasn’t in a good situation so it was a good change for me. Not just about the money, but about the football because Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Martinez added: “I was young and I didn’t speak the language so it was quite tough the first few months.

“They put me with an English family, but the culture was so different I said to Arsenal that I wanted my own flat and that I didn’t want to live with anyone else. I’ve been very independent from a very young age.

“I picked up the language quickly and obviously I have no regrets now.”

Martinez’s early years at Arsenal saw him coming through with players such as Hector Bellerin, Serge Gnabry and Francis Coquelin.

He made his first senior appearance for the Gunners in September, 2012, but even by then he had one spell out on loan – with Oxford United earlier that year.

Since then he has had stints with clubs both in England and Spain, with this current stay at Reading his fifth loan since his move from Argentina.

During that time he has made just nine senior appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, with just four of those coming in the Premier League.

And it’s that lack of action which will leave Martinez, who has just become a father for the first time, with a big decision to make when the season comes to an end.

“If they don’t trust me or buy a new goalkeeper, then my future has to be somewhere else,” he said.

“Obviously Petr [Cech] is retiring now. I don’t know what they are going to do but I’m sure that if week in, week out I was able to play at Arsenal that I could be one of the best. I just need a chance.

“Petr has opened the door for me and I have to step forward or move away.”

Martinez spoke with Unai Emery in January when the transfer window opened and made it clear that he wanted to go and get some game time.

Emery actually wanted him to stay, but the challenge of helping Reading try to escape relegation in the Championship was one that drove him to press his case for a move away.

“I was desperate to leave in January,” Martinez explained. “Even if he [Emery] didn’t want it.

“I had Reading and other clubs after me – both abroad and in England, but my first option was Reading because I knew the league, I knew the manager [Jose Gomes] and his style, so I had no doubts about coming.

“I liked the challenge. They were in the bottom three, so it was a massive challenge which could go either way. I was comfortable at Arsenal, sitting on the bench or playing Europa League games – but for me that is not a challenge.

“That’s why I came to Reading. I think we had Wigan and Millwall who were eight points above us when I came here and now we are above them. We’ve had a good run but there is a still a lot to do.”

Martinez’s focus now is to see the season out with Reading before heading off on holiday with his wife and nine-month-old son.

When he returns he will sit down with his agent and Arsenal before deciding what his next step will be.

His performances at Reading will not have gone unnoticed and there is sure to be huge interest in the keeper, who still has three years left on his contract.

Cech’s departure, however, represents a big opportunity for Martinez and he was told before he left the Emirates that Arsenal were planning for him to replace the former Chelsea man.

“That is the idea but you never know at Arsenal,” said Martinez. “They sign so many goalkeepers in front of me, like Leno, Ospina, Cech and so I never had a chance.

“The Arsenal fans wonder ‘is he good enough?’ But I’m proving here at Reading that I am good enough. Hopefully they give me a chance because I feel I deserve it.”

Martinez added: “I’ve never let my head drop because I really believe I could be one of the best. Being No.2 is not enough for me. I will never accept being No.2.

“If Arsenal give me the No.2 spot, it has to be to have a chance of getting the No.1 spot otherwise I’m not going to do it.

“If they don’t offer me any games, I can’t stay at Arsenal. I need to play.”

Is De Ligt Barcelona bound? Bartomeu 'knows what will happen' with Ajax defender

The Netherlands international is attracting interest from across Europe, but the president at Camp Nou claims to be aware of his future plans

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu claims “know what will happen” when it comes to the future of in-demand Ajax defender Matthijs de Light.

The Netherlands international is attracting interest from leading sides across Europe.

Manchester United remain in the hunt for centre-half reinforcements, while Premier League rivals Liverpool have been told that a fellow countryman would be the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk.

Goal revealed back in October that Juventus had joined Manchester City and Barca in the hunt for the talented teenager.

De Ligt has since conceded that he could end up heading to Italy to link up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Co in Turin.

Camp Nou, though, is still considered to be the most likely destination for a man who has already seen Ajax colleague Frenkie de Jong agree a switch to Catalunya.

No decision on his future has been revealed in public, but those in Amsterdam are aware that retaining the services of the 2018 Golden Boy will be difficult.

Bartomeu claims to be aware of what call has been made on De Ligt, with the Barcelona supremo telling ESPN FC of his side’s interest in the Dutchman: “There will be time to speak about him.

“Each year the club has an interest in making signings and this summer will be the same.

“De Ligt, like the other best players, is on the table. He is a great player and a great centre-back.

“I know what will happen with him but it’s not the moment [to talk].”

De Ligt has tried to curb the speculation which continues to rage around him by stating that he will only make his intentions known at the end of the season.

He told ESPN in January: “Am I annoyed by the rumours? No. Bored? A little bit.

“But it doesn’t matter to me if there’s an article about where I should go or what I should do. It doesn’t matter, at all.”

De Ligt had previously said: “At the end of the season I will consider if the time has come to make a step up.

“For all the rest, you will need to ask my agent or my managers. I repeat, I’m focused on Ajax.”

Guardiola reveals he wanted to sign 'exceptional' Mata for Barcelona

The Manchester City manager has expressed his admiration for the Manchester United midfielder, who is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer

Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on “incredible” Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata and revealed he wanted to sign him for Barcelona when he was the manager there.

Mata is out of contract at United in the summer, and he could well leave the Premier League as he chases the next opportunity in his career.

The Evening Standard claims that the Red Devils have offered the Spaniard a new one-year extension but that he wants a longer deal for what could be his final contract with the club.

As reported by Goal, Barcelona had been keen on taking the midfielder to Camp Nou, with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus having also shown an interest.

Philippe Coutinho’s future remains up in the air with Barca willing to consider offers for the Brazilian this summer, with Mata potentially coming in.

The 30-year-old already possesses experience of playing in La Liga having spent four seasons at Valencia before switching to Chelsea in 2011.

And Guardiola, who managed the Catalan side between 2008 and 2012, admits he wanted to bring the midfielder to the club but that he already had a plethora of options that stopped any negotiations taking place.

“He’s an exceptional player,” said Guardiola. “One of the players I like the most – not love because I don’t know him well, but one of the players I like the most.

“From Valencia, always in Barcelona, we took an eye to try to bring him to Barcelona, but the problem was we had a lot of midfield players.

“That was a little bit the problem, but he is an incredible player. He played really well at Chelsea and United.”

Mata has played 215 times for the Red Devils since joining the club from Chelsea back in January 2014.

He’s bagged 44 goals in his time so far for United, with five of those coming this season.

However, his time looks to be coming to an end with both parties seemingly unable to agree on a new contract at Old Trafford, with fellow midfielder Ander Herrera also having been linked with an exit.

Guardiola’s City, meanwhile, are unlikely to move for Mata with Goal having revealed that Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri is in their sights as they prepare to pay his €70 million (£60m/$80m).release clause.

After nearly two years away, Spurs can finally return home on Wednesday, with their new £1 billion ground finally ready for opening after a string of delays.

White Hart Lane may have gone, but it has provided the bulk of the site of which their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been built upon, with the club confident that the 62,062-seater arena is the greatest in the world.

Spurs, however, want a team to match and with finances tight during the construction process, it is all the more imperative that they play Champions League football next season.

A top-four place seemed a formality earlier this season but Mauricio Pochettino’s small squad has stumbled on hard times and has picked up just a single point in five outings, leaving them suddenly vulnerable ahead of a home doubleheader against Crystal Palace and already-relegated Huddersfield, who visit on April 13.

The latest blow they suffered was a 2-1 reverse against Liverpool on Sunday, which came about due to a catastrophic error from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, which led to Toby Alderweireld scoring a decisive own goal in the last minute.

“It is so important for the club to be in the top four at the end of the season,” Pochettino underlined to Sky Sports.

“It is now a mini-league – seven games and we are in the top four. It is in our hands.

“In the circumstances, my players are more than heroes. We need to keep our trust and confidence and we will fight to be in the next Champions League.”

Pochettino is looking forward to the opening of the new ground but has warned his players that they have to be “clever” with how they manage themselves in the game.

“It’s so important to manage the energy, a lot of emotion is going to be there,” he added.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson is also eager for this encounter.

“I am really happy that it has fallen our way, that we happen to be the team that Tottenham are playing on the day,” he said.

“Whether it turns out to be advantageous in any way we just have to wait and say. I somewhat doubt it.

“I think Tottenham will be so anxious to do so well that we are going to see the very, very best Tottenham that you can see.”

Spurs have won five of the last six meetings between these sides 1-0 and would doubtless welcome a similar success to christen their new ground.

'Fifteen points from six games' – Solskjaer sets Man Utd top-four target

The Old Trafford manager admits his team’s task has got harder since losing to Wolves but says Champions League qualification is within their reach

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United must win five of their six remaining Premier League games to finish in the top four.

United fell to their third defeat in four games – and the first since the Norwegian was handed the manager’s job on a permanent basis – with a 2-1 loss at Wolves at Molineux on Tuesday night.

It left them in fifth place, two points behind third-placed Arsenal and level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham.

They are one point clear of Chelsea, who are sixth, but all three of the London clubs have a game in hand.

Solskjaer is remaining positive despite admitting the defeat to Wolves, who also knocked his team out of the FA Cup last month, makes their Champions League qualification mission more difficult.

“We needed 15 points from seven games, now it is 15 from six – we don’t have room for many losses,” said Solskjaer.

“It is harder than it was before, but we’re a very good team, so it will be difficult for the teams who play against us.”

United have four home games – against West Ham, Manchester City, Chelsea and Cardiff – and away matches at Everton and Huddersfield remaining.

They missed out on the opportunity of going third against Wolves, despite taking the lead through Scott McTominay’s first goal for the club.

Diogo Jota’s equaliser and Chris Smalling’s unfortunate own goal saw United foiled.

“We should have been three up and created our own downfall,” added Solskjaer.

“It was a very good performance until they got their second goal and but for their keeper we would have won.”

Solskjaer, meanwhile, says he has no problem with Paul Pogba’s efforts despite the Frenchman having a below-par game against Wolves.

He said: “Paul is working as hard as any player in the team – some days it just doesn’t come off.”

Chelsea play Brighton and Spurs face Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

'Ozil exit would be preferable to Ramsey' – Juventus move 'hard to take' for Arsenal, says Keown

The former Gunners defender admits he would have rather seen a World Cup-winning playmaker depart this summer than a Wales international midfielder

Mesut Ozil departing Arsenal would have been preferable to Aaron Ramsey, says Martin Keown, with it “hard to take” that a player “at his peak” is leaving for Juventus.

The Gunners are already resigned to the fact that the Wales international midfielder will be heading to Italy in the summer.

Ramsey has a pre-contract agreement in place with Serie A champions Juventus as his deal at Emirates Stadium runs down.

Arsenal, who tied Ozil to a lucrative extension in 2018, were unable to convince a talented 28-year-old that he should stay put.

That disappoints former defender Keown, who admits he would rather have parted with a World Cup winner.

He told BT Sport: “Ramsey is at his peak but he’s leaving for another football club.

“It’s hard for the Arsenal faithful to take. I think he’s been harshly treated.

“I know there’s been the Ozil situation but if I was picking between him and Ramsey, it would have to be Ramsey.”

Keown added on Ramsey, who has been with Arsenal since 2008: “It’s a sad situation.

“He’s a victim of circumstances. He’s continued to mature as a player and develop.

“He’s a real leader in this Arsenal team. Playing in a deeper role, as he did under Arsene Wenger, I think that’s the best role for him if you want him and Ozil in the same team.

“He’s so important to everything they do. It’s the energy and the quality at the end of it. He really has become an outstanding technician.”

While questioning Arsenal’s inability to retain the services of a key man, John Hartson believes a fellow Welshman has been given an opportunity that was too good to turn down.

The ex-Gunner striker said: “I think the Arsenal fans have to get over it and I think it is an opportunity for the lad.

“He has got the chance to play in a great team with the best player over the last 10 years along with [Lionel] Messi in Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It is a different culture and a different league altogether and a big chance for him.

“Technically he is very good and he covers more ground than any other player.

“For me, his biggest asset is that he is a goalscoring midfielder and he should do well.”

Arsenal still have six Premier League fixtures to take in before bidding farewell to Ramsey, while a Europa League challenge appears set to reach the semi-final stage after securing a 2-0 victory over Napoli in the first leg of a heavyweight last-eight showdown.

Man Utd legend Scholes charged by FA over alleged betting breaches

The former Red Devils midfielder is alleged to have placed multiple bets on football in contravention of FA regulations

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over alleged betting breaches.

Scholes, who left League Two side Oldham Athletic a month into his first managerial post earlier this year, allegedly placed 140 bets on football matches.

The FA stated on Tuesday the bets were placed between August 17, 2015 and January 12, 2019 – prior to Scholes’ appointment at Oldham.

He has until April 26 to respond to the misconduct charge.

Scholes, who made 66 international appearances for England, previously wrote a column for betting company Paddy Power.

In July 2017, the FA cut Joey Barton’s ban from all football activity over betting breaches from 18 months to 13 months after the player appealed against the length of the sanction.

Barton, who did not play professionally again and is now in charge of Fleetwood Town, admitted placing 1,260 football-related bets between March 2006 and May 2016.

Scholes, considered among the best midfielders of his generation, is a Manchester United legend having made more than 700 appearances for the club between 1993 and 2013.

He initially retired from playing in 2011 but reversed that decision the following year to help the club through an injury crisis.

The midfielder ultimately agreed a new deal through the end of the 2012-13 season, helping the team to the Premier League title – the 11th league winners’ medal of his career.

After retiring for a second time Scholes began his coaching career with Manchester United Under-19s in an informal basis alongside Nicky Butt. He also joined the first-team coaching staff on a temporary basis when Ryan Giggs was appointed interim manager at the end of the 2013-14 season.

The same year Scholes joined with former team-mates and fellow members of the ‘Class of ‘92’Giggs, Butt, David Beckham, Phil Neville and Gary Neville in buying non-league side Salford City.

In January 2015 Scholes and Phil Neville took temporary charge of Salford for a game against Kendal Town following the sacking of manager Phil Power.

He was appointed manager of Oldham in January of this year, his first full-time managerial position.

He would only be in charge for seven matches, winning one, before resigning, saying he was unable to “operate as intended” and has stated he was misled before taking the job.

'Benatia thinks we can beat Juve' – Ziyech says ex-Bianconeri star is backing Ajax to cause Champions League upset

The Dutch giants can beat the Italian champions in Europe, according to the international team-mate of one of the club’s star performers

Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech has revealed that former Juventus defender Medhi Benatia is backing Erik ten Hag’s side to knock his old club out of the Champions League.

The two heavyweights will meet in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday night, with the return fixture scheduled to take place on April 16.

Juve are among the favourites to win this year’s competition, alongside the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona, after dispatching Atletico Madrid in the previous round.

Ajax, meanwhile, are the surprise package of the tournament this term, having already managed to knock defending champions Real Madrid out at the round of 16 stage.

Many experts and supporters have suggested that the Dutch outfit could make it all the way to the final and Ziyech is optimistic ahead of hosting the Bianconeri.

When asked for his assessment of the impending clash, the Moroccan confessed he has spoken to his international colleague Benatia about Ajax’s chances of beating Juve.

“Benatia? I spoke to him,” Ziyech told a press conference on Tuesday. “He likes how we are playing and in his opinion, we can beat Juve”.

Benatia joined Juventus back in 2017 after a successful loan spell, spending two years at the Allianz Stadium before completing a move to Qatar-based side Al-Duhail in January.

The 31-year-old won two Serie A crowns and two Coppa Italia titles during his time at the club and is thusly well placed to evaluate the current squad as they enter the latter stages of the Champions League.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men have already sewn up the Italian league for another season, but their burning desire is to conquer Europe for the first time since 1996.

Ajax are chasing their first crown since 1995 and an unprecedented double is also on the cards for them too, as they continue to negotiate a thrilling title with PSV in the Eredivisie.

Erik ten Hag’s men have won ten of their last 11 matches across all competitions and he is hopeful that the win over Real Madrid will serve as the catalyst for another shocking result.

“We must play Juventus with our style,” the 49-year-old boss began. “The most important thing is the result tomorrow. We are only thinking about the match against Juve.

“Juventus are an experienced team and can put different strategies into play. It will be another big obstacle to overcome after Bayern Munich and Real Madrid but we will play as usual and we will have to be good at reading the match.”

If you want to see me get kicked, watch MMA instead! – Neymar

The Brazil international believes he is unfairly targeted by opposition defenders and has vowed to continue to play the game his way

Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has hit back at critics of his style of play – urging them to watch mixed martial arts (MMA) instead if they enjoy seeing someone get kicked.

Few players in world football boast the technical attributes and dribbling abilities of Neymar, who has managed to successfully bring his playful style to Europe after toying with defenders in his native Brazil with Santos.

The silky forward wowed at Barcelona and has done the same at PSG, even though his spell in Paris has been interrupted by a pair of serious foot injuries.

Despite his exciting style, Neymar has rarely been far from criticism, with some accusing him of being a disrespectful showboater or reacting theatrically when fouled.

The combination of the two has seen Neymar come in for particularly rough treatment from defenders over the years and he does not understand it, adamant fans go to football games to see exciting players, not watch them get kicked.

“It may be because of how I play, the way my opponents get upset,” Neymar told Fox Sports Brazil .

“People start to give the right to the one who gives the fouls, rather than the one who dribbles, to the one who makes a mistake rather than the one who scores a goal.

“My best quality has always been dribbling. I have never stopped looking for the best version of myself in the field.

“My style is what brings the fans and the crowd to the stadium. Nobody wants to come and see kicks. If you want that, you can watch MMA or boxing.”

Neymar made his first appearance in over two months as he came off the bench on Sunday as PSG sealed the Ligue 1 title with victory over Monaco.

And despite his absence being cited as a key reason for Thomas Tuchel’s side not advancing past the last 16 in the Champions League, his return to action could yet be timely.

PSG go in search of a domestic double when they take on Rennes in the Coupe de France final on Sunday, with Neymar set to play a role for the French champions.

His attention will then likely turn to the summer where he will form part of the Brazil team looking to win the Copa America on home soil.

Hudson-Odoi: Lampard positivity key to new Chelsea deal

Callum Hudson-Odoi says he “feels fit and healthy” and is enjoying the “positive vibe” on and off the pitch under Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

Click Here: brisbane lions guernsey 2019

The 18-year-old has been out of action for five months after he ruptured his Achilles towards the end of last season.

The injury came at a bad time for him as he had only recently established him as a first team regular at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea host Liverpool on Sunday in a game that may have come too soon for Hudson-Odoi, but the England international is close to a return after he played an hour for the U23s last week.

“I feel good, I feel healthy and really fit,” Hudson-Odoi told Standard Sport.

“The recovery was a long time but it made me feel much stronger, it has made me mentally stronger and has built my confidence more and more.”

Hudson-Odoi looked close to leaving Chelsea for Bayern Munich in January but the belief Lampard has shown in youth at Chelsea has been a key factor in persuading him to sign a new contract.

“He [Lampard] has come in and given a lot of players a chance, even in training he is giving a lot of youth team players the chance to train with us.” Hudson-Odoi said.

“It is good for me because it is encouraging, you see players that you have watched or played with throughout the whole time and they are getting opportunities to play and you have that same hunger and desire, you want to play as well.

“It gives me the confidence and boost of if I am doing well, working hard in training I will get the opportunity to play as well.”

“For me it is warming, knowing that the manager and the staff around, plus the fans, everybody wants you to come back and for me I just can’t wait to be back now, start playing and hopefully just show what I can do.”

Hudson-Odoi was asked how life under Lampard differs to that under Maurizio Sarri.

“The only thing [that has changed] is that we’ve got a more positive vibe in the changing room and on the pitch.” Hudson-Odoi said.

“We are all happy I think because the manager has come in, he used to be a great player himself at the club, and now he has come in and we all give respect to what he has done for the club before. I think the camp now is just more happy, more positive.”
