Liverpool confirm two more first-team summer departures

Liverpool have confirmed that Connor Randall and Adam Bodgan will leave this summer.

After bidding farewell to Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno earlier this week, the European champions released their retained list on Friday.

Randall and Bogdan were the two most notable names, both of whom were on the bench for Jurgen Klopp’s first game as manager against Tottenham in October 2015.

They will be released when their contracts expire in the summer, with Randall having made eight appearances and Bogdan six.

The Reds also announced that academy players Juanma, Conor Masterson, Glen McAuley, Corey Whelan and Ben Williams will leave, while new contracts have been offered to Bobby Adekanye, Daniel Atherton, George Johnston, Abdi Sharif and Edvard Tagseth.

Randall was somehow named in Klopp’s updated Premier League squad in February, but has not even been on a league bench for the club since October 2016.

Bogdan spent the season on loan at Hibernian, last featuring for the club in May 2016.

Pochettino sets deadline for Tottenham to seal £45m move

Ryan Sessegnon ‘has set his heart on a move to Tottenham’ after telling Fulham he will not extend his contract.

Sessegnon has one year remaining on a Fulham deal he signed in June 2017, but has no intention of signing new terms.

The 19-year-old has instead decided to either spend the next 12 months with Fulham in the Championship before leaving for free, or leave Craven Cottage this summer.

And The Guardian says Sessegnon ‘has set his heart’ on joining long-term suitors Tottenham, despite interest from PSG and Manchester United.

It even seemed as though he could be Liverpool’s next relegated signing but Sessegnon wants to join Tottenham ‘as he believes he would thrive under Mauricio Pochettino’.

The manager would like to complete any potential deal before July 8, when his squad returns for pre-season training, but Tottenham and Fulham remain at an impasse over the fee.

Fulham would want around £45m for the England youth international, while Tottenham ‘are not inclined to pay more than £25m’.

The north Londoners hope that they can capitalise on ‘the disastrous prospect’ of Fulham losing Sessegnon for mere compensation if he was to leave when his contract expires.

Atletico haven’t the ‘slightest idea’ over Griezmann’s intentions

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has not the ‘slightest idea’where Antoine Griezmann will move this summer.

Griezmann announced his intention to quit Atletico at the end of the season bringing down the curtain on a five-year stay with the club.

The France star was expected to join Barcelona but the Catalans have yet to make an approach to Atletico. Manchester City and PSG are also unwilling to meet the attacker’s release clause which drops to £106million next month.

Cerezo was unable to add any clarity over Griezmann’s future when he was asked by Onda Cero.

“Griezmann has been with for five years and done a splendid job,” the president said.

“We have a good relationship. Nice, trustworthy.

“I hope wherever he goes he will be treated the same as he has been with us.

“I don’t know where he’s going, he didn’t say. I don’t have the slightest idea where he will go. I don’t think anyone knows.

“No one from Barca has contacted me.”

De Ligt fronts up over ‘very stupid’ mistake

Matthijs De Ligt has spoken of his determination to atone for his ‘very silly’ mistake which handed England their lead in the Nations League semi-final on Thursday night.

The Holland defender was caught in possession by Marcus Rashford, who went down under De Ligt’s desperate challenge to earn the Three Lions a penalty.

Rashford converted the spot-kick, but England surrendered their advantage when De Ligt escaped John Stones to head in a second-half equaliser.

Stones then gifted Holland the lead in extra-time before another mix-up in possession presented Quincy Promes with the chance to kill off England with six minutes remaining.

De Ligt accepts he made a needless error but the Ajax captain, who could be heading for PSG, satisfied his desire to make up for an uncharacteristic mistake.

“The penalty action was very silly and I know it very well,” he admitted after the match in Guimaraes.

“I received a ball from De Roon and my intention was to play the ball with Cillessen, but I was late, it was very stupid, because I should not have sent the ball to the goalkeeper.

“I’m very demanding with myself and I had to compensate that error.”

QPR rename Loftus Road for a good cause

QPR’s home ground Loftus Road is to be renamed The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium for the 2019-20 season.

Supporters chose the The Kiyan Prince Foundation from a shortlist of five local charities to receive the naming rights to the stadium.

Kiyan Prince was a promising footballer in the QPR academy who was stabbed to death outside his school aged 15 when he broke up a fight in 2006.

“I can’t tell you what this means to Kiyan’s mum, to me, his brothers and sisters, his friends and people who have been supporting the work we have been doing,” said Kiyan’s father Mark, who set up the charity to educate young people about the consequences of knife crime.

“It means so much and only confirms the relationship that I know I have with the QPR fans. They always give me their support.

“This gives us so many opportunities and we have to make sure we capitalise on them. Kiyan would be blown away by what is going on.”

Arsenal ‘monitoring CSKA Moscow striker’ who scored against them

Click:what is my life path number

Premier League side Arsenal are interested in CSKA Moscow striker Fedor Chalov, according to reports.

Chalov, who has come through the youth system at CSKA, was the club’s leading scorer in the Russian top-flight last campaign with 15 goals.

The 21-year-old has played for Russia at every youth level before finally making his senior debut against Belgium in March and now has two caps.

And now his impressive season for CSKA has turned heads across Europe as Sky Sports claim that Arsenal ‘are one of a number of top clubs monitoring’ Chalov.

The report adds that Monaco and Sevilla are understood to be interested following the youngster’s impressive form.

Chalov scored in his side’s impressive Champions League group stage victory over Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, while he also bagged against the Gunners when they met in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette were in fine form for Arsenal this season, scoring 35 in the Premier League between them, meaning a place in the side would be hard to come by for Chalov.

Meunier ‘dreams’ of Man Utd move – but they ‘favour’ another man

Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier is keen to sign for Manchester United this summer but the Premier League side have someone else in mind, according to reports.

The Belgium international is entering the final year of his contract at PSG and is being linked with a host of clubs including United, Arsenal and Everton.

Meunier has played 29 times this season in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing four assists from full-back.

The 27-year-old was linked with a move to United in L’Equipe at the end of April with the French newspaper claiming a €25-30million transfer is ‘likely’ this summer.

Over a month on and L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) are still linking Meunier with Old Trafford, with a fresh report on Thursday saying that the Belgian ‘dreams’ of playing for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Despite that, the French publication reckons United ‘favour’ another man, ‘for now’, in the form of Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The report adds that there has been no offer for the PSG defender and that the Ligue 1 side want ‘at least’ €20million for him.

Seaman: How Man Utd will beat Arsenal in the transfer window

David Seaman thinks Manchester United will get the better of Arsenal in the summer transfer market despite them being in a “very similar situation”.

Neither club have Champions League football to attract players to their clubs, while both need to strengthen their defence as a matter of urgency.

And Seaman sees United having the edge over the Gunners due to their massive spending power.

“When you look at Arsenal, they’re in a very similar situation to United,” Seaman told talkSPORT.

“They need to strengthen at the back, they’re both without Champions League football, so it’s going to be testing times.

“I would say United [are in a better place than Arsenal] because of their buying power and the money they will pay for players.

“That [Arsenal’s transfer budget] is so frustrating at Arsenal because the club is running on a good profit.

“The fans are so frustrated at the moment, especially with the result in the Europa League final against Chelsea.

“I watched it and it was a disappointing result.

“It was made a little bit better by the weekend result [Tottenham being beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League final], but it’s so disappointing.

“They’re struggling. It’s just so frustrating being an Arsenal fan and an ex-Arsenal player at the moment.

“You know what the club is capable of, so you’re just like, ‘come on, let’s see what you’ve got’.”

Sterling ‘fuming’ after England captaincy confusion

Raheem Sterling woke up “fuming” after a PR company connected to him claimed he would captain England in their Nations League semi-final against Holland.

A press release circulated late on Tuesday evening suggested the Manchester City forward would lead out the Three Lions to mark the occasion of his 50th cap.

There was no official confirmation from the Football Association at the time, while manager Gareth Southgate remained tight-lipped over who would wear the armband when he addressed the media on the eve of the Holland clash.

The press release read: “The Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year is set to wear the Captain’s armband for England’s UEFA Nations League semi-final fixture against The Netherlands in Portugal, on Thursday evening, 6th June.”

But Sterling insisted he knew nothing of the release and had not spoken to anyone, including Southgate, before Tuesday evening – revealing he apologised to the England boss when he realised what had happened.

“I couldn’t tell you that,” Sterling replied when asked what had prompted the release.

“I woke up this morning fuming. I hadn’t had a conversation with Gareth or anyone in my agency, so it was a strange one to wake up to.

“The first thing I did after I came off the phone to my agent was see Gareth down the hallway, and I apologised to him for what had happened. I don’t know where that’s come from.”

Southgate would not be drawn on who would captain his side in Guimaraes, given there are fitness concerns over regular skipper Harry Kane.

The Tottenham forward appeared jaded as he made his first start for seven weeks in Saturday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

Southgate refused to rule Kane out of the contest against the Dutch and would not give away any of his team selection in advance so as not to give Holland boss Ronald Koeman an advantage.

“If I confirm anything about the team other than that Raheem is playing, I’m doing half of Ronald’s job for him,” he said.

“I don’t want to discuss the captaincy. Harry Kane is our captain. If he doesn’t play, then I have a decision to make. I’m not prepared to say whether Harry Kane is playing tomorrow.”

While the decision is Southgate’s to make, Sterling – who will collect his 50th cap at the age of 24 – said he would be proud to captain his country at some point.

“That’s something that’s down to the manager, not for me to decide,” he said.

“But if the manager did do that, it’s something I’d be proud and happy to do for sure. That’s up to the manager.”

Sterling has enjoyed a fine season for club and country, having lifted a domestic treble with Manchester City, earning the Football Writers Footballer of the Year award and reinvigorating his England career.

The former Liverpool man had scored just two goals in his first 45 senior caps before hitting six in his last four appearances.

He struck a brace as England won 3-2 in Spain on their way to reaching the Nations League finals and followed that up with a Wembley hat-trick in a 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win against the Czech Republic.

Having been criticised in some circles as England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup last summer, Sterling admits he hit the reset button after the tournament and hailed his goals against Spain as a watershed moment.

“I feel grown up,” he said.

“I’ve watched a lot of England games and I always had a dream to play for them. I never thought I’d be in with a chance to make a 50th cap.

“It is a massive achievement for me and something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life, and so will my family.

“Spain was a massive turning point for me, to break my duck. A massive highlight was being part of that World Cup squad, being able to go so far in the tournament, but disappointed not to go the full way. It’s a learning curve, something we’ll take into the game tomorrow.

“At 17 or 18 years of age, I wasn’t looking at my goals to games ratio. I wanted to enjoy it and be free.

“It was only a few years ago that I realised how bad my record was with England. I put pressure on myself to end that drought, which wasn’t a great thing to do.

“I spoke with the manager and the other players and I’m just glad I’ve broken that drought now.”
