Klopp issues injury update on Liverpool duo ahead of CL final

Jurgen Klopp has issued an injury update on Liverpool duo Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino ahead of their Champions League final against Tottenham on Saturday.

Keita tore an adductor muscle in Liverpool‘s 3-0 semi-final first leg defeat in Barcelona and the initial prognosis was a two-month absence.

But having responded well to treatment the midfielder, who is out in Marbella with the rest of the squad preparing for the June 1 clash with Tottenham in Madrid, has now returned to running.

However, Klopp has ruled him out of the Champions League final but he had better news on the fitness of Firmino.

“No chance for Naby,” Klopp told reporters. “He is really progressing well we will see how it works out for him in Africa Cup of Nations.

“Bobby (Firmino) trained then we took him out then he will be in training again tomorrow. All what we saw looked good. He will be fine, I’m sure.”

Spanish police arrest LaLiga players over alleged match-fixing

Spanish police have made several arrests following a complaint from LaLiga about a game in May 2018 that was possibly fixed by “an organised criminal group”, the Spanish league has confirmed.

According to local reports, current and former players, as well as club officials, from Spain’s top two divisions have been detained. Press Association Sport understands the match in question was a LaLiga 2 game.

In a statement, a LaLiga spokesman said: “Today’s police action follows a complaint filed by LaLiga with the Spanish authorities about possible match-fixing in a May 2018 match.

“We want to thank the National Police for the extraordinary work done to dismantle what appears to be an organised criminal group dedicated to obtaining economic benefits through the predetermination of football matches.”

LaLiga explained that it tipped off the police after its “integrity protection systems” – detailed analysis of betting patterns – detected possible match-fixing.

During the season just finished, the league said it has also filed eight complaints with the General Commissioner of the Judicial Police “for alleged acts related to match-fixing” below LaLiga 2 and international friendlies played in Spain, and it has flagged up 18 suspicious matches with the General Directorate of Gaming for the possible identification and sanction of players.

It added: “LaLiga continues to fight to eradicate any scourge against fair play in Spanish football.”

Hazard reveals why he rejected Man Utd, City transfers

Eden Hazard has explained why he chose to sign for Chelsea despite offers from Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham.

The 28-year-old swapped French side Lille for Stamford Bridge in 2012 for £32million before establishing himself as one of the best players the Premier League has ever seen.

Hazard is expected to depart Chelsea this summer, having long been linked with a move to Real Madrid but Hazard has revealed how his journey in English football could have been a lot different.

“I had a chance to sign for Manchester United, Man City, Tottenham, but I made the right decision,” Hazard told the Guardian.

“I spoke with the owner and I had Didier Drogba and Joe Cole on the phone telling me this was the best club.”

When asked if he could play for another club in the Premier League, Hazard added: “No chance, no chance. I am a Blue! It means a lot to me. I cannot play for another club in this country.”

The Belgian playmaker insists nothing has been finalised regarding his future, but he conceded lifting the Europa League trophy in Baku would provide a fitting send-off.

Hazard said: “I just want to win the trophy, that is it. It does not matter if I score or I do not score. If it is my last game, I hope to bring the trophy.

“Would it be the perfect farewell? Yes.”

Real president Perez denied Ramos free transfer to China

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claims he denied Sergio Ramos a free transfer to China as it “would set a terrible precedent for other players.”

Spanish newspaper AS claimed on Saturday that both Liverpool and Manchester United were interested in bringing Ramos to the Premier League with the 33-year-old wanting to leave Real.

Before the Daily Mirror claimed on Sunday that Liverpool would not sign the Spaniard even if he was available on a free transfer.

Ramos is Real’s longest serving player and is worshipped by the fanbase for the success he has helped bring to the club during his time as captain.

And now Perez has explained that Ramos wanted a move to China but he refused it as there was no way he could let him leave the Bernabeu for nothing.

“They [Ramos and his agent] came to see me in my office and told me they had a very good offer from China but the league rules over there wouldn’t permit them to pay the transfer fee,” Perez told radio station Onda Cero.

“What was I going to tell him? We said this couldn’t happen but we’d speak to the club to satisfy him but that Real Madrid could not afford to let its captain leave for free as that would set a terrible precedent for other players.”

Arsenal ‘to hijack Man Utd move’ for €30m PSG defender

Arsenal are ready to make a move for Manchester United transfer target Thomas Meunier, according to reports.

The Belgium international is entering the final year of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and is being linked with a host of clubs including the Red Devils and Everton.

Meunier has played 29 times this season in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing four assists from full-back.

The 27-year-old was linked with a move to United in L’Equipe at the end of April with the French newspaper claiming a €25-30million transfer is ‘likely’ this summer.

Meanwhile, the Independent claimed at the time that Meunier is seen as the easiest route to filling the troublesome right-back spot at Old Trafford.

However, France Football says that Unai Emery wants the Gunners to sign Meunier after being impressed by the defender during his time at Parc des Princes.

And now the Spaniard has reportedly added Meunier to his shortlist of targets for the summer with PSG wanting around €30million (£26.5m) for him.

The report adds that the move could hinge on whether Arsenal qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League when they play Chelsea on Wednesday.

Koeman: ‘Rather sour’ if Liverpool don’t win final

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has suggested that both Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum ‘deserve’ to win the Champions League with Liverpool.

The former Everton boss believes it would be “rather sour” if Liverpool’s astonishing season ended in no silverware; they are Europe’s second-best side according to their points total.

Van Dijk and Wijnaldum will join up with the Netherlands next week for the Nations League finals.

“It would be rather sour if both ended up empty handed after such a formidable season and being so close to huge trophies,”said Koeman.

“Van Dijk, Wijnaldum and Liverpool do not deserve that.”

Barcelona make Suarez ‘transferable’ after Liverpool games

Barcelona have reportedly made Luis Suarez available for transfer this summer after his poor performances against Liverpool in the Champions League and his decision to undergo knee surgery.

The Uruguayan scored against his former club at the Nou Camp but then struggled at Anfield; he then opted to miss the end of the La Liga season and the Copa Del Rey final to have knee surgery.

Spanish newspaper SPORT says Suarez ‘is accused of putting the Copa America ahead of the Copa del Rey’ and that he is now considered ‘transferable’.

The report adds that ‘he was singled out for his performances against Liverpool in the Champions League’.

It is thought that Barcelona staff are keen to break up the Suarez/Messi power share in the dressing room that has apparently vetoed a summer move for Antoine Griezmann.

‘Liverpool target’ excited by Manchester City move

Reported Liverpool target Houssem Aouar has gushed about the possibility of joining Manchester City this summer.

The France Under-21 international has been repeatedly linked with Liverpool but he has been more recently noted as a target for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Liverpool have watched Aouar this season along with Nabil Fekir and Maxwel Cornet, who says he is “flattered” by the links.

But Aouar would prefer to join City, telling Canal Football Club: “Wouldn’t you like to play at City? It’s a big European club, and every player has the desire to play for a big European club.

“Also, they’re coached by Guardiola, who for me is a benchmark for coaches.

“He knows everything, he sees everything before it happens and makes his teams play very well.

“That’s what I like: his way of looking at football.”

Lyon winger ‘flattered’ by links with Liverpool

In-form Lyon winger Maxwell Cornet says that links with Liverpool are “flattering”.

The Ivory Coast international has ended the season with five goals in six Ligue Un games as Lyon have sealed third place.

His Lyon contract does not expire until 2021 but there is speculation that he could leave the club this summer, with Liverpool linked with him as well as just about every other Lyon player after scouts watched them throughout the season.

Cornet was linked with a move to Watford in January but he has since established himself in the Lyon first team, though the French club has not met his demands for a new deal.

“I did not say I wanted to leave,” he told beIN Sports France. “We met the president in January and I said I wanted to extend, but talks were not successful.

“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”
