Il 6 maggio 2016 le guide alpine di Courmayeur Luca Rolli e Francesco Civra Dano hanno sciato la via Major sulla parete est del Monte Bianco. Questa è soltanto la seconda discesa di questa linea in 37 anni, dopo la prima effettuata il 7 settembre 1979 da Stefano de Benedetti.

È per certi versi la sciata perfetta. Dalla cima del Monte Bianco giù per l’immensa parete est (ovvero il mitico versante della Brenva), sempre più giù, fino alla Val Veny. 3300 straordinari metri di dislivello lungo la via della seconda Sentinella al Col Major, conosciuta più semplicemente come la Via Major, salita per la prima volta nel 1928 dagli inglesi Thomas Graham Brown e Francis Sidney Smythe. Una linea “di una bellezza unica”, sciata per la prima volta da Stefano de Benedetti (accompagnato da Gianni Comino che è sceso a piedi) nel lontano settembre 1979, poi mai più. Per tanti motivi. Come per esempio le condizioni della neve, che quest’anno sono del tutto eccezionali. E, soprattutto, per via dei seracchi che incombono continuamente durante la salita e la discesa. Tanto da relegare questa salita nel cuore della Brenva come un pericoloso e proibitivo sogno, da realizzare solo nel momento magico. Il 6 maggio questo attimo fugace è arrivato per Luca Rolli e Francesco Civra Dano, due fortissime guide alpine di Courmayeur che, partendo a mezzanotte dal bivacco Borgna Alberico alla Fourche, hanno percorso la via in 9 ore. Per poi – praticamente senza interruzioni – effettuare quella che Rolli descrive come “la discesa della vita”. La loro sciata perfetta.

Non è mai facile partire per un’avventura come può essere sciare la Major: quando chiudo dietro di me la porta di casa ho l’impressione di andare a caccia di draghi, con tutto quello che comporta.

Il giorno che saliamo alla Fourche sono infastidito da un vento teso (in attenuazione) che ci continua a schiaffeggiare. Con il passare delle ore la pressione mentale all’interno del bivacco sale: abbiamo di fronte un mostro di parete alta 1300m, solcata da profondi canali e protetta da giganteschi seracchi: sono a caccia di draghi, questa è la verità. Il momento in cui a mezzanotte mi sporgo con la corda dal bivacco è quello in cui finalmente trovo pace interiore: il cuore comincia a pompare per attività fisica e non più per la tensione. La salita avviene nel buio più totale e l’assenza di luce amplificava le percezioni sensoriali nel terreno di caccia prescelto. 6 ore dopo, sotto i seracchi di uscita, arriva la luce calda e confortante che porta con sé pace, tanta pace. Infine arriva la cima del Monte Bianco. Ad un tratto un senso di rilassamento mi investe e i mostri (o draghi) che stavo cacciando, sono sconfitti. Non ho ancora vinto, ma capisco che ce la possiamo fare, che questa è la nostra giornata, che niente ci potrà distrarre dalla realizzazione di un sogno per cui abbiamo aspettato anni, per cui mi sono preparato per una vita.

La discesa in sé scorre via veloce e perfetta, semplicemente perfetta. A valle un abbraccio con Francesco: non avrei potuto avere compagno migliore. Ora visualizzo mentalmente che questa discesa mi ha reso più forte e conscio che la direzione intrapresa nel 2010 con il nostro primo viaggio sulla Nord della Blanche è la precisa concretizzazione delle parole di Andreas Fransson: “life goes on and how we want it to go on is a choice, and even if we want to escape, there is no-where to escape: so we might as well make right now awesome.”

Dal bivacco della Fourche ci sono servite 9 ore per risalire – sci in spalla- tutta la via ed arrivare in cima al Monte Bianco. Dalla cima in 3 ore scarse eravamo in Val Veny. Abbiamo sciato per l’intero dislivello dalla cima del Bianco al fondovalle con 15 metri di conserva facile e 2 piccole doppie. E’ anche questa l’eccezionalità della discesa: calzare gli sci in vetta e arrivare sciando 3300m più in basso.

Le pendenze sul vero e proprio sperone della Major sono sostenute e l’esposizione è totale. Un buon innevamento ci ha però permesso di non avere mai dubbi ed essere confidenti dei nostri attrezzi.

Il racconto dell’apertura della via Luce del Primo Mattino (1991, Piccolo Dain, Valle del Sarca, Trentino) in ricordo di Andrea Andreotti. Di Marco Furlani.

Quella notte avevo bivaccato benissimo, la sera prima mi ero scavato una piazzola niente male sulla testa del pilastrino, dove avevamo deciso di bivaccare, e mentre contemplavo la valle che era ancora nel buio e incerta avanzava la luce dell’alba. Osservavo estasiato in alto, oltre i grandi strapiombi e il formidabile tetto: al canto insistente del cuculo il sole incominciò a illuminare la roccia tingendola di colori incredibili, uno spettacolo mozzafiato.

– Andrea, Andrea… ho trovato il nome della via… che ne dici di Luce del Primo Mattino?

Al contrario di me, Andrea Andreotti, il mio compagno, usciva dal torpore di una notte passata male, dopo la prima dura giornata trascorsa in parete; era stanco e la sera precedente aveva preferito bivaccare in amaca. Non aveva dormito nulla, però a sentire il nome si destò e disse: – Bello, molto bello… la nostra via si chiamerà Luce del Primo Mattino!

Intanto la giornata radiosa di sole inondava tutta la sottostante valle e fu una ridda di sfumature e colori fantastici come solo la valle del Sarca può garantire a chi la guarda dall’alto.

Andrea era un bell’uomo, alto, colto e con un volto particolare sempre abbronzato e incorniciato da una barba ben curata che lasciava spiccare la luminosità degli occhi: grande alpinista, uomo che volava alto, al di sopra di tutto, soprattutto delle sterili polemiche e chiacchiere che circondano la più insulsa delle attività umane cioè l’alpinismo. Persona acuta, sapeva sdrammatizzare anche nella più critica delle situazioni, ma soprattutto era uno che sapeva quello che faceva e faceva quello che diceva. Con modo gentile di fare, non si alterava mai e le uniche cose che gli interessavano erano famiglia, lavoro e aprire belle vie: intendeva l’alpinismo come una forma d’arte suprema, quasi esoterica.

Nel trionfo della luce dunque ci destammo e facemmo una magra colazione, poi preparammo il saccone e ripartimmo. Il programma di quel giorno era superare la zona delle pance rosse. Io superai il diedro bianco, poi le placche color ruggine sotto le aggettanti pance rosse e lì riprese lui il comando. Io mi sistemai sul seggiolino di legno e assicurai attento il compagno che saliva lentamente lo strapiombo in un vuoto assoluto.

Nelle lunghe ore di attesa ero rapito dalla visione sul sottostante lago di Toblino con le sue acque appena increspate dalla leggera brezza dell’òra: era la fine di maggio 1990, il verde intenso creava un delicato contrasto con la fioritura bianco rosa dei meli che era al massimo splendore.

Mentre Andrea avanzava con pazienza, tenacia e meticolosità piantando quei piccoli chiodini a espansione che a salirci sopra ti vengono i brividi, mi chiedevo quale fosse il segreto di questo magnifico atleta. Stava appeso per ore e ore a martellare senza battere ciglio, aveva una resistenza che trascendeva l’umanamente possibile, non esisteva né caldo né freddo e aveva per la montagna una passione esaltante.

Ad un certo punto un rumore di ferraglia secco e un violento strappo alle corde mi risvegliò dalla contemplazione, uno di quei famigerati chiodini era uscito e Andrea era volato, con tutti i suoi 90 kg, per qualche metro nel vuoto… Tutto bene, riparte con la calma che lo distingue, supera il tiro, attrezza la sosta su di un appoggio, dove stavano appena i piedi, in un vuoto da mal di stomaco. Dopo sette ore posso ripartire.

Fra equilibrismi e contorsioni ci scambiamo e riprendo il comando, superando la grigio-rossa placca superiore con una roccia a gocce incredibilmente bella, fantastica, e con un’arrampicata libera stupenda raggiungo la cengia sotto il grande tetto. Lasciando riposare Andrea mi do da fare a spianare per il bivacco, poi pianto qualche chiodo nel tetto, ma presto diventa buio e ci prepariamo alla seconda notte in parete.

Non ci manca niente, il saccone da traino era pesante da recuperare ma adesso abbiamo tutto quello che ci serve per una bella cena, pane, speck, persino torrone e acqua in abbondanza. Il tempo è sempre bellissimo, parliamo, facciamo progetti, siamo contenti per la via che è veramente bella, e poi di donne e della fatica che queste fanno a sopportare noi scalatori che siamo così presi dalla nostra passione che, a volte, egoisticamente ci dimentichiamo di loro… Poi arriva il sonno ristoratore.

Un’altra alba, la terza sempre bella, sempre mozzafiato e le riflessioni sulla fortuna di abitare nel nostro ridente Trentino con tutte le sue bellezze. Andrea vuole finire di chiodare il tetto: – Così lo chiamerò Tetto delle Aquile – dice.
Io lo guardo e rispondo: – Ma che aquile… non vedi che sembri un passerotto impaurito?
Lui mi guarda e risponde: – Hai ragione, lo chiameremo Tetto dei Passerotti… va bene?
Annuisco ma il mio sguardo è preso dall’enorme soffitto.

Il tetto è veramente un tetto e richiede parecchie ore per chiodarlo. Finalmente verso mezzogiorno riesce a superarlo, io rapidamente sui chiodi lo seguo e riparto con due tiri di arrampicata sempre difficile ma su roccia ottima… e raggiungiamo il bosco sommitale

Conoscevo già Andrea per la sua eccezionale attività, ma non avevamo mai scalato assieme prima che lui mi invitasse ad aprire questa via. Ci siamo veramente trovati bene anzi benissimo insieme, siamo due elementi che si compensano bene: le forze dell’uno equilibrano le lacune dell’altro, come deve essere in una cordata vera.

Quella sera dalla cima del Dain Picol scesi con due certezze: una, che prima o poi sarei venuto ad abitare nella valle del Sarca, l’altra, che avevo trovato il compagno giusto per scalare i grandi tetti del monte Brento. Ma questa è un’altra storia…

Un maledetto male ce lo ha portato via lasciandoci attoniti increduli, proprio LUI così buono, generoso e solare. Come sempre rimaniamo senza parole, non riusciamo a mandarla giù.

The government plans to introduce a system in fiscal 2020 to provide subsidies on a priority basis for projects included in municipal anti-disaster plans adopted under a basic law on developing resilient infrastructure, sources have said.

The system is aimed at encouraging municipal governments to draw up such plans promptly in light of a spate of major natural disasters in recent years, sources said Friday.

According to the Cabinet Office, all of the nation’s 47 prefectural governments had compiled anti-disaster plans under the law as of March this year, but only 229, or about 10 percent, of all municipalities had done so as of the beginning of this month.

The law allows but does not require local governments to have their own plans for comprehensive measures to prevent or mitigate disasters.

The government plans to hold briefing sessions for local governments about the new system.

In its fiscal 2019 budget, the government already gives consideration to subsidies for municipal anti-disaster projects to a certain extent. It will boost this stance in the fiscal 2020 budget.

For fiscal 2021, the government will consider limiting eligibility for the subsidies to projects listed in local anti-disaster plans, according to the sources.

Meanwhile, government agencies are expected to disclose their respective subsidy allocation policies for the fiscal 2020 budget.

The foreign ministers of Japan, China and South Korea will meet next week on the outskirts of Beijing to discuss North Korea and other regional issues, officials said Friday.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono will leave for Beijing on Tuesday to join his Chinese and South Korean counterparts, Wang Yi and Kang Kyung-wha, in their first three-way meeting since August 2016, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

Arrangements are being made for Kono to meet separately with Kang and Wang during the three-day visit, the ministry said, adding that the trilateral meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.

Japan’s relations with South Korea have sunk to their lowest level in years due to disputes over wartime history and trade policy. Kono and Kang met earlier this month on the sidelines of meetings related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Bangkok but failed to resolve the bilateral spat.

Marking the 74th anniversary of the end of Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula on Aug. 15, South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for dialogue with Japan, saying Seoul will “join hands” if Tokyo chooses the path of holding talks.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Moon have not sat down for talks since bilateral ties worsened sharply following South Korean court rulings that ordered Japanese firms to pay compensation for wartime forced labor during the colonial period from 1910 to 1945.

The trilateral meeting comes after diplomatic sources said earlier that the foreign ministers would coordinate the schedule for their leaders’ summit chaired by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in December.

GENEVA – Japan insisted Friday it no longer hunts endangered sei whales in international waters, but faced accusations of still violating a wildlife treaty by allowing the commercialization of meat collected from past catches.

The standing committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) last October found Japan to be in breach of the treaty and ordered it to rectify the situation or face trade sanctions.

The elected panel, which handles the treaty’s compliance and enforcement, dismissed Japan’s claims that the culling since 2002 of some 1,500 North Pacific sei whales was only scientifically motivated.

Instead, it found that the hunt was primarily commercially motivated, and thus constituted international trade in a protected species and a clear violation of the treaty.

Japan told the committee meeting in Geneva on Friday that it no longer permits the hunting of sei whales on the high seas and is therefore in compliance with CITES.

“This matter should be considered closed,” a member of the Japanese delegation said, a day before a global conference of all 183 countries that have signed the treaty kicks off in Geneva.

But committee members, including from the European Union, Israel, Niger, Peru and the United States, disagreed. Many voiced outrage at the continued sale of meat and blubber from the whales deemed to have been illegally culled and imported over a 16-year period.

According to conservationists, 1,500 tons of meat from 131 sei whales killed in 2018 alone have been commercialized in Japan, and sei whale meat remains widely available in shops and restaurants in the country.

“It is truly shocking,” the representative from Niger told the meeting, maintaining that when illegal international trade is detected in other endangered species, such as elephant ivory, the stockpiles are ordered confiscated and destroyed.

The European Union representative agreed, pointing to Article 8 of the convention, which he said “requires … confiscating specimens traded, or in this case introduced from the sea, in violation of CITES.”

Japan meanwhile stressed that it had immediately followed the committee’s October ruling, but balked at the idea it should be applied retroactively.

In the end, the committee ordered Japan to report back on its use of the sei whale stockpiles, but put off the thorny discussion on confiscation until next year.

Juan Carlos Vasquez, in charge of legal affairs at the CITES secretariat, said the issue was complex and would likely spark a lengthy debate, but said he did not think it was fair to compare Japan’s sei whale meat stockpile with stockpiles of illegal ivory.

The illegal ivory trade is “clearly conducted by criminal syndicates,” he said, stressing that Japan’s sei whale hunt on the other hand was conducted by scientific institutes.

“Everything is traced, registered, controlled,” he said, adding that while CITES had rebuked Japan over its motives for the whaling, it was clear that “these are not criminals hunting whales.”

While Japan remains bound by CITES international wildlife trade restrictions, it has withdrawn from the International Whaling Commission, enabling it last month to resume commercial whaling in its territorial waters for the first time in decades.

It has allotted itself a hunting quota of 227 of the mammals this year, including 25 sei whales.

Bayern Munich have agreed a deal “in principle” with Barcelona to sign Philippe Coutinho on a season-long loan deal.

The Bundesliga champions announced following their 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin on Friday night that they had reached an agreement with the former Liverpool star, with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

The Brazilian is due in Munich in the coming days to finalise the deal and undergo a medical.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic travelled to Barcelona this week to seal the deal.

“I can confirm that I was in Barcelona with Hasan on Wednesday and that we reached an agreement with both the club and the player,” Rummenigge said on the club website. “We have been watching Coutinho for a while.”

Salihamidzic added: “I would also like to thank Barcelona. Of course, a few details are still to be sorted out, but we are very happy that we will bring this player to Bayern.”

Coutinho’s future has been the subject of intense speculation for the whole summer, given the arrival at the Nou Camp of Antoine Griezmann and their interest in bringing Neymar back to the club.

The Brazilian, who has struggled to reproduce the sort of form he showed for Liverpool since leaving the Reds in a £142million deal in January 2018, was not in the Barcelona squad for their defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Friday.

Bayern coach Niko Kovac, who saw his side drop two points at home in their opening game of the Bundesliga season, also welcomed the impending arrival of Coutinho.

“I am of the opinion that not only FC Bayern, but the entire Bundesliga and all of Germany can look forward to welcoming such a top player here in this league,” he said.

Bayern also announced the “imminent signing” of 20-year-old French midfielder Mickael Cuisance from Borussia Monchengladbach.

On the pitch, Kovac admitted his side were punished for not making the most of their dominance against Hertha.

In the end, the hosts needed a Robert Lewandowski penalty to earn a point after Hertha scored two quickfire goals at the end of the first half.

“Hertha were a bit lucky to share the spoils, but they defended well,” Kovac said. “We had a lot of chances, we failed to take many clear-cut chances.

“But I can’t blame my team. They tried everything, they gave it everything. It was one-way traffic, we were dominant. But we lacked the bit of luck you need. A compliment to Hertha for bearing up against it. We must make sure we soon collect the two points we failed to take today.”

Hertha boss Ante Covic, in his first Bundesliga match as a head coach, said: “When you play away to Munich you know from the start you can’t dominate the match as you’d like to. You must still believe you can have some good moments to take something away from here.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes Tottenham will again be challenging at the top end of the Premier League this season, with the teams set to meet at the Etihad on Saturday.

Spurs have finished third and fourth in the standings over the last two campaigns and also reached this year’s Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool.

And Guardiola has no doubts Mauricio Pochettino’s men will prove stubborn opposition this term as well.

He said: “Since I came here to England, every season they have been a contender. Always they were there, always they were tough games.”

Guardiola reported a clean bill of health for the match, with Raheem Sterling again set to lead the line against Tottenham.

The England forward hit the ground running with a hat-trick against West Ham in their season opener and the City boss knows the player is a talent.

Asked if Sterling is one of best in Europe, Guardiola said “There are many and he is one of them. We have many but other clubs do too.”

Mauricio Pochettino has declared his “love” for former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho after he tipped Tottenham to challenge for the Premier League title.

Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last campaign, 27 points off champions Manchester City and 26 points adrift of second placed Liverpool.

Mourinho claimed Tottenham are one of the sides capable of beating City to the Premier League title this season.

When asked how he felt about Mourinho labeling Tottenham possible title contenders, Pochettino told reporters: “I love Mo (Mourinho).

“We all know he is so clever, he is so sarcastic sometimes, that is why the is one of the best managers in the world.

“I respect his opinion. I am grateful, too, because a coach like Mourinho believing in our potential to be a contender is important.

“We have our belief and our faith in us, but that compliment helps us to believe that little bit more, of course.”

 

Brighton boss Graham Potter believes handing Lewis Dunk the captaincy will help bring the best out of the defender and the rest of the squad.

Dunk, 27, took on the armband for the new campaign following the retirement of Bruno, and led the team to an impressive 3-0 win at Watford in their opening Premier League game.

Potter believes England international Dunk can grow into the leadership role as the Seagulls look to push on following a disappointing end to last season under Chris Hughton.

“Lewis has been brilliant as a captain and taken on the responsibility as both a player and a character around the environment,” Potter said.

“He enjoys the responsibility on and off the field and also as his role in the centre of a back three, where we’ve used him so far.

“We’ve changed a few roles, and then you have someone like Solly (March), who is a typical wide player.

“He is comfortable to cover the ground up and down the field and I would say there’s more to come from him too, as there is with everyone in the group.”

Dunk is relishing the opportunities ahead.

He told the club’s official website.: “We have got a good group of players and a lot of good leaders in the changing room, players that are vocal before, during and after the game.

“It’s just my job to be overlooking and making sure everyone is doing everything right.”

Despite a promising start, former Swansea boss Potter maintains there is plenty of hard work ahead.

“We are still only at the start of what we are trying to do, the reality is we have still only been working with one another for a number of weeks,” Potter said at a press conference.

“That is normal, you need the competition to start to get true information, and from there you can start looking at performances.

“There is room for everything to improve and that is exciting – but the players’ application has been really impressive and is a result of the foundations that were here to begin with.”

Potter is set to take charge of a first home Premier League match on Saturday for the visit of West Ham, who were beaten 5-0 by champions Manchester City.

The Seagulls, though, should not expect an easy ride against Manuel Pellegrini’s squad, which saw plenty of summer investment.

“We are up against a tough side who will be looking to push on, we need our fans and they’ve been great so far,” Potter said.

“Hopefully we can give them something to cheer about and reward them for that.”

È la regista Anca Damian la vincitrice della Genziana d’oro miglior film – Gran Premio “Città di Trento”. La giuria internazionale ha premiato con il riconoscimento più ambito il suo film La Montagne Magique: lastoria di Adam Jacek Winkler, fotografo, alpinista e militante politico, narrata in una biografia che abbraccia metà del Novecento. La Genziana d’Oro Miglior film di esplorazione o avventura – Premio “Città di Bolzano” è andata all’epicoThe Great Alone di Greg Kohs che celebra la figura di Lance Mackey, vincitore per quattro volte consecutive della Iditarod Trail, la celebre corsa di slitte trainate da cani lunga 1868 chilometri. Un film che “risveglia il nostro animo bambino grazie a un corteo di eroi in viaggio verso il Nord, attraverso paesaggi ammalianti avvolti in temperature estreme”.

Le Genziane d’Argento sono state così assegnate: per il miglior contributo tecnico-artistico a Behemoth di Zhao Liang, già in concorso a Venezia e acclamato tra i migliori documentari del 2015, sull’impatto sul paesaggio dell’industria estrattiva e le terribili condizioni di lavoro nelle miniere della Mongolia; per il miglior cortometraggio a Last Base di Aslak Danbolt, sull’ultimo salto di jumping di Joachim che ha perso un amico a seguito di un lancio spericolato.

Il Premio della Giuria se lo è aggiudicato My Love, don’t cross that river di Jin Moyoung, il ritratto della storia d’amore unica tra Byongman Jo e Gyeyeul Kang, coppia di anziani coniugi che vivono fianco a fianco da 76 anni. “Quando si incontrano film unici, si ha la sensazione di aver conosciuto realmente i suoi protagonisti. In questo caso non abbiamo conosciuto non solo due bellissime persone, ma anche il grande amore che in fondo al cuore tutti desideriamo.”

Menzione speciale per On the Rim of the Sky di Hongjie Xu, che fotografa il villaggio di Gulu e la minuscola comunità che lo abita, abbarbicata sui monti della provincia cinese del Sichuan. “Attraverso un’analisi intima, ci si avvicina alla realtà dei bambini e dei loro insegnanti e allo stesso tempo si testimonia il cambio irreversibile di uno stile di vita grazie alla forza dell’educazione, dimostrando che le frontiere non sono solo geografiche.
